A Review of the Duotone D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast Series

A Review of the Duotone D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast Series

Tony Jones |

Since founding The SUP Company, I’ve been in the fortunate position to get to use and ride some of the best watersports equipment available. From day 1, I knew this was key to anyone trying to make the decision to part with their hard earned money on a new kit. Since then demo and the opportunity to test has been at the core of everything we do, this includes both our SUP focussed shop & test centre at Woodmill as well as our Wing & Foiling shop and test centre at Calshot. While everyone can’t visit us, reviews such as this come in where we get to share our experiences to help you make the difference.

When the Duotone D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast series landed, I knew it was going to be a game-changer. The Duotone carbon masts were already the stiffest and most performance orientated we had seen and used, so we knew this new range of masts would be designed with next level precision and innovation. The result and our findings has made us believe that this new D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast range is set to redefine what riders can expect in terms of performance, stiffness, and versatility.

A Slimmer, More Streamlined Profile

Duotone’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design is evident in the D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast series. Compared to its predecessor, the updated masts are slimmer, boasting a reduced drag profile that is immediately noticeable on the water. The 76 cm mast, for example, features a profile that tapers from 13.5 mm at the base to around 15 mm at the top. This reduction in both thickness and cord length (down to 108 mm at the bottom and 115 mm at the top) delivers unparalleled low-drag performance.

What does this mean in real terms? For you and I, it translates to a freer, more responsive feel, especially during tight turns and high-speed runs. The ability to carve tighter lines and manoeuvre with greater agility is a standout feature, making this mast ideal for advanced wingfoilers looking to push their limits.

Tailored Performance Across Three Sizes

The D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast range comprises three sizes: 76 cm, 84 cm, and 94 cm, each designed for specific disciplines and rider needs. Here’s a breakdown of their intended use:

  • 76 cm: Perfect for prone surf foiling and downwind runs, this mast is designed to handle relatively large wings (up to 110 cm span) without compromising stiffness. Despite its slim profile, the 76 cm mast remains impressively rigid thanks to its high-modulus carbon fibre construction and solid core. Riders will appreciate the lightweight feel combined with robust strength, even during pumping sessions.
  • 84 cm: Targeted at freestyle and wave riders, this mast features a slightly thicker profile (14.5 mm) and increased cord length for added durability and stiffness. It’s built to handle big landings, aggressive manoeuvres, and turbulent conditions without missing a beat. The 84 cm mast strikes a balance between playfulness and reliability, making it the go-to choice for versatile riders.
  • 94 cm: Optimised for racing and high-speed performance, the 94 cm mast features a unique profile designed to resist ventilation at extreme lean angles. With a slightly longer cord length for enhanced torsional rigidity, this mast is built for speed and stability, ensuring confidence during high-speed kite foiling or competitive wingfoiling.

Precision Engineering Meets Practical Design

One of the standout features of the D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast series is the redesigned base plate. Tapered and elongated for a cleaner water entry, the base plate minimises drag and improves overall hydrodynamics. This feature is especially beneficial for downwind SUP riders who need every advantage to get on foil efficiently.

Duotone has also retained its trusted 3BS connection system, ensuring full compatibility with existing fuselages and M8 bolts. This backward compatibility is a testament to Duotone’s rider-focused approach, making upgrades seamless for those already invested in their ecosystem.

Advanced Materials for Unmatched Stiffness

To achieve the desired balance of stiffness and durability, Duotone has incorporated high-modulus carbon fibre in a solid core construction. This shift from the hollow-core design of previous models ensures that the masts remain stiff and responsive, even under extreme loads. While this change does result in a slight increase in weight, the trade-off is more than justified by the improved ride quality and performance.

On-Water Impressions

Having tested the 84 cm and 94 cm masts, I can confidently say that the D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast series delivers on its promises. The reduced drag is immediately noticeable, and the added stiffness enhances both stability and responsiveness. Whether you’re carving tight turns, pumping for a wave, or pushing the limits of speed, these masts excel across the board.

For advanced riders, the playful yet precise feel of the 84 cm mast is a revelation. it’s just so direct. Meanwhile, the 94 cm mast’s high-speed stability and resistance to cavitation make it a speed merchant’s dream. The slightly heavier weight is quickly forgotten once you experience the improved performance and reduced drag.

Why the D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast Series Stands Out

Duotone has once again raised the bar with the D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast series. By refining the design, optimising materials, and tailoring each size for specific disciplines, they’ve created a range of masts that cater to the diverse needs of wingfoilers. The combination of reduced drag, increased stiffness, and thoughtful design touches ensures that these masts deliver exceptional performance in any scenario.

For riders looking to raise their game, the Duotone D/Lab 2.0 Slim Mast series is an investment well worth making. Past experience shows that the 84 cm will be the most popular size while the two other sizes will have their fans. If you are already on Fanatic or Duotone foils and riding proficiently then this mast really is worth considering. Yes, its a step up in money but bang for buck and certainly compared to any of the competition (that makes claims to have the stiffest, lightest, fastest blah, blah, blah!), this range of carbon masts represents excellent value for money. As someone who’s seen and tested countless pieces of kit, I can wholeheartedly recommend these masts to any serious wingfoiler.
