Watersports car key security

Key Locks for Paddleboarding, Surf, Kayak, Wing & Foil Sessions

A key lock or key safe is one of those small bits of kit that makes getting on the water much easier. Instead of taking your car key onto the water or hiding it somewhere obvious near the vehicle, a key lock gives you a more practical way to store your key while you paddle, surf, kayak, wing or foil.

This collection brings together compact watersports key locks from brands including ION and Surflogic. If you are building a simple car park setup, it is worth pairing a key lock with the right transport accessories, waterproof bags and car seat covers so your sessions feel smoother from car to water and back again.

How to Choose the Right Key Lock

What is a watersports key lock?

A watersports key lock is a small lockable key safe designed to help you store your car key while you are away from the vehicle. For paddleboarders, surfers, kayakers, wing foilers and windsurfers, it solves a common problem: where do you put your key when you are wearing a wetsuit, launching from a beach car park or heading out from a riverside spot?

It is not about making your vehicle impossible to access; it is about making your key storage more sensible, less obvious and easier to manage than hiding a key under a wheel arch or trying to take an electronic key onto the water.

Key size, keyless fobs and what to check before buying

The first thing to check is the physical size of your key. Many modern car keys and keyless fobs are larger than older metal keys, so make sure the lockbox you choose has enough internal space for your key or fob.

If your car uses keyless entry, think carefully about where the key safe will be positioned and how your vehicle behaves when the fob is nearby. If in doubt, test this at home before relying on it at the beach. Some customers prefer to separate the removable emergency blade from the electronic fob, while others use a larger key safe to store the whole fob.

Useful options in this collection include the ION Keysafe, Surflogic Key Lock Standard, Surflogic Key Lock Maxi and Surflogic Key Lock Double System.

Where should you attach a key lock?

Always attach a key lock to a solid, fixed point on the vehicle. That might be a towing eye, roof bar, chassis point or other secure metal fixing depending on your vehicle. Avoid obvious weak points, plastic trim, removable accessories or anything that could be easily pulled away.

Before leaving the vehicle, check that the lock is fully closed, the code has scrambled properly, and the box cannot be slipped off the fixing point. It is also worth positioning the lock somewhere discreet rather than in full view.

Which key lock suits your type of session?

SUP and kayak sessions

A compact key safe is ideal when you are leaving from a river, lake or beach car park and want to avoid taking your car key onto the water.

Surf and wetsuit sessions

A key lock keeps things simple when you are changing in the car park and do not have dry pockets or a safe place to store a key.

Wing, foil and windsurf trips

If you are juggling boards, wings, foils, pumps and bags, a key safe removes one small but annoying bit of car park faff.

Advice from The SUP Company

Our advice is simple: choose a key lock that fits your actual key, attach it to a proper fixed point, keep it discreet, and treat it as one part of sensible watersports security rather than a complete security solution on its own.

If you are visiting our Woodmill SUP Test Centre or arranging a visit through The SUP Co x Lymington, ask us about the practical car park setup we would recommend for your board, paddle, foil or wing kit. The aim is always the same: try the right kit, get sensible advice, and ride with fewer small problems getting in the way.

Key Locks FAQs

Do I need a key lock for paddleboarding?

If you drive to the water and do not have a safe dry pocket or someone staying with the car, a key lock is a very useful accessory. It is especially handy for solo paddlers, early morning sessions, beach car parks, river launches and touring paddles where taking a key onto the water is awkward or risky.

Will a key lock fit my car key or keyless fob?

That depends on the size of your key or fob and the internal space of the key lock. Modern keyless fobs can be quite bulky, so check the product page carefully before ordering. If you are unsure, contact us with the approximate size of your key and we will help you choose the most suitable option.

Is a key safe better than taking my key onto the water?

Often, yes. Taking a modern electronic car key onto the water brings its own risks, especially around saltwater, impact and accidental loss. A key safe avoids that problem, provided it is attached sensibly to the vehicle and used correctly.

Where is the best place to put a key lock on a car?

Use a strong fixed point that cannot be easily removed. Avoid plastic trim, wipers, door handles or anything flimsy. The best position will vary by vehicle, so take a few minutes to check before your first session rather than trying to work it out in a windy car park.

Are key locks completely theft-proof?

No portable key lock should be treated as completely theft-proof. It is a practical deterrent and a much better option than hiding a key somewhere obvious, but you should still park sensibly, keep valuables out of sight and use good judgement around where and when you leave your vehicle.

Should I use a key lock for surfing, wing foiling or kayaking?

Yes, the same logic applies. If you are wearing a wetsuit, launching away from the vehicle or using kit that makes carrying valuables awkward, a key lock can make your session much easier. It is useful across SUP, surf, kayak, wing, foil and windsurf sessions.

How should I look after a key lock after saltwater sessions?

If your key lock has been exposed to salt, sand or spray, give it a quick rinse with fresh water, dry it properly and keep the mechanism clean. As with most watersports accessories, a little care helps it work better for longer.
