Travel bag buying guide

Choose by what needs protecting: dry kit, wet kit or expensive gear

Not all watersports bags do the same job. A waterproof backpack keeps essentials dry on the board. A kit bag swallows wet clothing after a session. A wetsuit bag protects the car. A foil quiver bag protects high-value foil parts. A board bag helps prevent dings and travel damage.

Start with the sport, then choose the right size, carry style, waterproofing level and protection type for the kit you need to move.

How to choose the right watersports travel bag

Choose a waterproof backpack or dry bag if you need to keep phones, keys, layers, snacks and spare clothes protected from spray, rain and wet decks. This is the best starting point for SUP, kayak, beach trips and family watersports.

Choose a kit bag, wetsuit bag or stash bag if your main problem is wet kit after the session. These bags help keep salt water, sand, mud and soaked neoprene contained before you put everything in the car.

Choose a board bag, wing gearbag, foil quiver bag or kite bag if you are protecting expensive equipment in transit. For foils, wings and boards, padding and correct sizing matter more than simple waterproofing.

Waterproof backpacks, dry bags and crossbody bags

Waterproof backpacks and dry bags are the most useful day-to-day bags for SUP, kayak, beach and boat use. They keep essentials together and help protect them from splashes, rain, wet decks and damp kit.

A 7L crossbody bag is useful for keys, phone, wallet and small essentials. A 20L to 30L waterproof backpack is better for spare layers, food, safety kit and day trips. Larger kit bags make more sense when you are carrying towels, wetsuits, changing robes and multiple people’s gear.

Useful related ranges include waterproof bags, paddleboarding accessories, kayak kit and surf accessories.

Red Paddle Co and Red Original waterproof bags

Red Paddle Co and Red Original bags are strong choices for paddlers who want practical waterproof storage for SUP, open-water swimming, beach days and everyday watersports travel. The range includes waterproof backpacks, lightweight dry bags, crossbody bags, kit bags, cool bags and swim tow-float dry bags.

Choose a waterproof backpack if you want one bag for most sessions. Choose a crossbody bag for smaller valuables. Choose a kit bag when you need more volume for towels, dry clothing, changing robes and family gear. Choose a cool bag for longer beach days, picnics and summer sessions.

These bags work especially well alongside paddleboards, inflatable SUPs, kayaks and changing robes.

Foil quiver bags, wing gearbags and kite bags

Foil, wing and kite gear needs more protection than a simple dry bag. Masts, front wings, stabilisers, fuselages, boards, wings and kite gear can be expensive and awkward to transport, so padding, compartments and correct sizing really matter.

A foil quiver bag helps keep foil parts together and protected. A wing gearbag is useful for wings, boards and accessories. Kite bags and crush bags help keep kite kit contained when travelling or storing gear between sessions.

Useful related ranges include foil boards, foil board bags, foils, wingsurfing wings and kite accessories.

Board bags, transformer bags and travel protection

Board bags protect against the damage that often happens before or after a session: car park knocks, roof rack scuffs, van loading marks, rail chips, fin box knocks and general storage wear. They are especially important for composite boards, foil boards, surfboards and boards that travel regularly.

Transformer-style SUP bags are useful for inflatable paddleboards because they make carrying, storage and transport easier. Day bags and padded board bags make more sense for hard boards, surfboards and foil boards where impact protection is the priority.

Useful related ranges include board bags, inflatable board bags, composite board bags, surf board bags and SUP transport accessories.

Wetsuit bags, changing bags and wet kit storage

Wetsuit bags and changing bags are designed for the messy side of watersports: wet neoprene, sandy towels, muddy boots and dripping kit after cold sessions. They help protect the car and make packing down much easier.

A small wetsuit bag works for one suit or wet accessory set. A larger wet/dry kit bag is better if you are carrying wetsuits, boots, gloves, towels, children’s kit or multiple people’s gear.

Useful related ranges include wetsuits, wetsuit accessories, neoprene footwear, changing robes and surf accessories.

Cool bags, tow-float bags and session extras

Cool bags, tow-float dry bags and small waist packs are not essential for every session, but they are very useful when you are spending longer at the beach, paddling with family, open-water swimming or trying to keep valuables dry and easy to access.

Cool bags are ideal for food and drinks on longer days. Tow-float dry bags suit open-water swimming and swim support. Waterproof waist packs are good for keys, phone, cash and small essentials when you do not want a larger backpack.

For complete session setup, also look at water bottles, changing robes, waterproof bags and paddleboarding accessories.

Which bag suits your sport?

For SUP and kayak

Choose a waterproof backpack or dry bag for layers, phone, food and safety kit. Add a board bag or transformer bag if you regularly travel with an inflatable SUP.

For surf and beach sessions

Choose a wetsuit bag, changing bag, board bag and waterproof pouch for valuables. A cool bag is worth adding for longer family beach days.

For wing foil and foil

Choose padded gear bags, foil quiver bags and foil board bags. Protection and compartment layout matter more than simple waterproof storage.

For kitesurf

Choose kite bags, crush bags, waterproof storage and wet kit bags around how you travel, how many kites you carry and whether you are packing for local sessions or trips abroad.

Waterproof, water-resistant and padded: what matters?

Waterproof bags are designed to protect contents from wet environments, but they are not all intended for full submersion. Roll-top dry bags and waterproof backpacks are ideal for splash protection, rain, wet decks and general paddling use.

Water-resistant bags are useful for damp kit and light exposure, but they should not be trusted with valuables in heavy spray or if the bag may sit in water. Padded bags are different again: their main job is impact protection for boards, foils, wings, paddles or kites.

For valuables, use an appropriate waterproof phone case or secondary dry pouch inside your main bag. For boards and foil parts, choose padding and fit first.

Brands in the travel bag range

This collection includes watersports travel and storage options from brands such as Red Paddle Co, Red Original, AXIS, Dakine, Duotone, ION, Mystic, Prolimit and Surflogic. Each brand has a different strength, so choose by use first rather than brand alone.

Red Paddle Co and Red Original are strong for waterproof storage, kit bags, backpacks and SUP-friendly everyday carry. ION, Duotone, AXIS and Dakine are more relevant for wing, foil, kite and board travel. Prolimit and Surflogic offer practical wet kit, waterproof and post-session bag options.

If you are unsure, choose by the equipment you need to carry, the level of padding required and whether the priority is waterproofing, wet kit control or travel protection.

Complete your travel and storage setup

A good bag setup usually includes one dry bag for valuables, one larger kit bag for wet clothing, and suitable padded protection for boards, foils, paddles or wings. Add roof straps, rack pads and changing kit if you are travelling regularly.

Travel Bags FAQs

What size waterproof bag do I need for paddleboarding?

For small essentials, a 2L to 7L dry bag or waist pack is usually enough. For spare layers, food and safety kit, look at 20L to 30L. For towels, wetsuits, robes and family kit, choose a larger kit bag.

Are waterproof bags fully submersible?

Not always. Many waterproof bags are designed for rain, spray, wet decks and splash protection rather than long submersion. For phones and valuables, use an appropriate waterproof phone case or secondary dry pouch inside the main bag.

What is the difference between a dry bag and a waterproof backpack?

A dry bag is usually a simple roll-top waterproof storage bag. A waterproof backpack adds shoulder straps, structure and easier carrying, making it better for day trips, walking to launch spots and carrying more kit.

Do I need a board bag?

A board bag is strongly recommended if you transport or store a hard board, surfboard or foil board regularly. It helps protect against knocks, rail damage, UV exposure, wax transfer and general car park damage.

What bag should I use for wet wetsuits?

Use a wetsuit bag, wet/dry kit bag or changing bag. These help contain salt water, sand, mud and soaked neoprene so your car, van or house stays cleaner after the session.

What bag do I need for foil gear?

For foil gear, choose a padded foil quiver bag or dedicated foil bag that protects masts, wings, stabilisers and fuselages. Padding, compartments and correct sizing are more important than simple waterproofing.

Are cool bags useful for watersports?

Yes, especially for long beach days, family paddles, camping trips and summer sessions. A waterproof or rugged cool bag keeps food and drinks organised around wet, sandy kit.

Can I use one bag for SUP, kayak, surf and wing foil?

One waterproof backpack or dry bag can work across several sports for clothing and essentials. Boards, wings, foils and kites need more specific padded bags that match the equipment size and shape.
