Pump Foil & Dock Start
This collection brings together specialist pump foil and dock-start equipment for riders chasing efficient flat-water starts, longer glide, better pumping technique and compact foil setups that feel direct underfoot.
Pump foiling is highly setup-sensitive, so the right board, front wing, mast, fuselage and rear stabiliser all matter. If you are unsure what will suit your weight, ability and local launch, speak to The SUP Company team before ordering and we will help you build a sensible setup.
Pump foil and dock-start FAQs
What is pump foiling?
Pump foiling is using body movement and foil efficiency to keep flying without a wing, paddle, boat or wave power. It normally needs a specialist foil setup, good technique and a suitable place to start from.
What is a dock start?
A dock start is when you launch from a dock, pontoon or low platform onto the foil, then use pumping technique to keep the board flying. It is a specialist skill and is not the easiest first step into foiling.
Is pump foiling suitable for beginners?
It depends what you mean by beginner. If you are completely new to foiling, pump foiling is usually too specialist as a first step. Most riders progress more sensibly through wing foiling, SUP foiling, prone foiling or foil assist before focusing on dock starts and flat-water pumping.
What size front wing do I need for pump foiling?
The right size depends on your weight, ability, cadence, mast/fuselage setup and whether you want easier lift or more speed and glide. A larger, more efficient wing can help early progression, but too much lift or drag can hold you back once your technique improves.
Do I need a dedicated pump foil board?
For proper dock starts and pump sessions, a dedicated compact board helps. It keeps swing weight low and gives a more direct connection to the foil. A larger wing foil or SUP foil board may be easier to stand on, but it will usually feel less efficient for pure pumping.
Can I use my wing foil setup for dock starts?
Some crossover setups can work, especially if the foil has good low-speed lift and glide. However, a typical wing foil setup may feel too slow, draggy, large or unstable for efficient dock-start practice. Ask us before buying extra parts if you are trying to adapt an existing setup.
What safety kit should I use for pump foiling?
A helmet and impact vest are strongly recommended, especially when practising dock starts. You are working close to a hard platform and a sharp foil, so sensible protection makes the learning process safer and more confidence-building.
Can I get help choosing a pump foil setup?
Yes. Send us your weight, ability level, current foil system, where you ride and what you want to achieve. The SUP Company team can help you compare boards, wings, masts, fuselages and rear stabilisers so you buy a setup that works together.
Need help before choosing?
Pump foil and dock-start setups are highly personal. Before you guess, tell us your rider weight, current setup, ability level and what sort of sessions you are aiming for.
