Pump Foil & Dock Start

Pump Foil & Dock Start

This collection brings together specialist pump foil and dock-start equipment for riders chasing efficient flat-water starts, longer glide, better pumping technique and compact foil setups that feel direct underfoot.

Pump foiling is highly setup-sensitive, so the right board, front wing, mast, fuselage and rear stabiliser all matter. If you are unsure what will suit your weight, ability and local launch, speak to The SUP Company team before ordering and we will help you build a sensible setup.

Pump foil and dock-start buying advice

A good pump foil setup is not just about choosing the biggest front wing. You need enough low-speed lift to get flying, enough glide to stay up, a board that transfers energy cleanly, and a rear wing/fuselage pairing that gives you control without feeling slow or draggy.

Pump foil boards

Compact, stiff boards help transfer each pump cleanly into the foil. Browse dedicated pump and glide foil boards or compare them with the wider foil boards collection.

Front wings

Your front wing is the engine of the setup. For dock starts and pump foiling, look for usable low-speed lift, glide and predictable stall behaviour. See our foil front wings.

Rear wings and fuselages

Rear stabiliser and fuselage choice fine-tunes pitch control, pump rhythm, stability and drag. Explore rear stabilisers and foil fuselages.

How to choose the right pump foil setup

Start with your real goal. Are you learning dock starts, pumping from flat water, linking small bumps, training technique, or building a crossover setup that also works for winging, SUP foiling or prone foiling?

For most riders, the key choices are:

  • Board: compact, stiff and easy to place underfoot.
  • Front wing: enough lift and glide for your weight and speed.
  • Rear stabiliser: stable enough to control pitch without killing pump efficiency.
  • Fuselage: matched to the foil system and the level of stability or looseness you want.
  • Mast: long enough for clean flight, but not so long that early dock-start attempts become harder than they need to be.

If you are choosing between parts, look at complete routes such as foil completes, or ask us to sanity-check the full build before you order.

Pump foil board, wing foil board or downwind board?

Dedicated pump foil boards are normally short, compact and very direct. They are made for dock starts, flat-water pumping and efficient technique work, not for paddling long distances or standing around in choppy water.

A wing foil board gives more volume and stability for winging, tacks, gybes and everyday riding. A downwind foil board is longer and more efficient for paddle starts, bump linking and open-water glide.

If your main aim is pure dock-start practice, stay compact. If you want crossover use, compare the full foil boards range before committing.

Brand and product routes to consider

This collection includes specialist pump and dock-start options from brands such as AXIS and Duotone Wing Foiling.

Useful starting points include the AXIS Ultimate Pump Foil Set Up, AXIS PNG V2 Front Wing, Duotone Strider SLS 2026 Pump Foil Board and Duotone AMP SLS 2.0 Front Wing 2026.

For broader system advice, read our Code Foils S Series vs R Series vs X Series guide or the Duotone 2026 wingfoiling range guide.

Complete the setup safely

Pump foiling and dock starting involve repeated falls, hard surfaces and fast-moving foil parts, so safety kit matters. We strongly recommend suitable protection, especially while learning or practising from a dock, pontoon or low platform.

If you are building a full setup from parts, check compatibility before ordering. Small changes can make a big difference to how easy the foil is to pump.

Try, Advise, Ride: getting the decision right

Try: Where suitable and subject to availability, our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington can help serious foil customers compare equipment before committing.

Advise: Tell us your weight, ability, current setup, local conditions and what you want to improve. We will help you avoid mismatched parts and choose a progression route that makes sense.

Ride: The aim is not just to buy more kit. It is to spend more time flying, with a setup that helps you progress rather than fighting against you.

Finance, delivery and support

Foil setups are serious purchases, so it is worth checking the full build before you order. If you need help choosing, contact us with your rider weight, ability level and the products you are comparing.

Pump foil and dock-start FAQs

What is pump foiling?

Pump foiling is using body movement and foil efficiency to keep flying without a wing, paddle, boat or wave power. It normally needs a specialist foil setup, good technique and a suitable place to start from.

What is a dock start?

A dock start is when you launch from a dock, pontoon or low platform onto the foil, then use pumping technique to keep the board flying. It is a specialist skill and is not the easiest first step into foiling.

Is pump foiling suitable for beginners?

It depends what you mean by beginner. If you are completely new to foiling, pump foiling is usually too specialist as a first step. Most riders progress more sensibly through wing foiling, SUP foiling, prone foiling or foil assist before focusing on dock starts and flat-water pumping.

What size front wing do I need for pump foiling?

The right size depends on your weight, ability, cadence, mast/fuselage setup and whether you want easier lift or more speed and glide. A larger, more efficient wing can help early progression, but too much lift or drag can hold you back once your technique improves.

Do I need a dedicated pump foil board?

For proper dock starts and pump sessions, a dedicated compact board helps. It keeps swing weight low and gives a more direct connection to the foil. A larger wing foil or SUP foil board may be easier to stand on, but it will usually feel less efficient for pure pumping.

Can I use my wing foil setup for dock starts?

Some crossover setups can work, especially if the foil has good low-speed lift and glide. However, a typical wing foil setup may feel too slow, draggy, large or unstable for efficient dock-start practice. Ask us before buying extra parts if you are trying to adapt an existing setup.

What safety kit should I use for pump foiling?

A helmet and impact vest are strongly recommended, especially when practising dock starts. You are working close to a hard platform and a sharp foil, so sensible protection makes the learning process safer and more confidence-building.

Can I get help choosing a pump foil setup?

Yes. Send us your weight, ability level, current foil system, where you ride and what you want to achieve. The SUP Company team can help you compare boards, wings, masts, fuselages and rear stabilisers so you buy a setup that works together.

Need help before choosing?

Pump foil and dock-start setups are highly personal. Before you guess, tell us your rider weight, current setup, ability level and what sort of sessions you are aiming for.

Use our Lymington Try It Now service where appropriate, browse the wider foils collection, or contact The SUP Company team for practical setup advice.
