Foiling Protection (Helmets, Impact Vests & Leashes) at The SUP Company
Foiling is addictive — but it’s also fast, sharp-edged and occasionally unpredictable. The right foiling protection doesn’t just reduce risk; it genuinely increases confidence, which means more progression and more fun on the water. This collection brings together helmets, impact vests and leashes that make sense for wingfoiling, SUP foiling, prone foiling, pump foiling and electric foiling.
From Solent chop to gusty south coast wind windows, UK sessions can be punchy. The aim is simple: protect your head, protect your ribs, and keep your wing/board connected in a way that reduces tangles and allows a safe release when you need it.
Shop protection by category
-
Helmets – hard-shell and soft/hardcap options for wing & foil use
-
Impact Vests – rib and torso protection (some with extra buoyancy, depending on model)
-
Wing Leashes – wrist and waist systems, including quick release options
What to look for (so you buy right first time)
Helmets: Fit is everything. You want a secure, low-profile helmet that doesn’t rock back in a fall, with enough adjustment to dial it in over a hood in colder months.
Impact vests: Think “rib protection” first. A good impact vest softens crashes, protects your chest/ribs during board/boom/handle contact, and can make learning manoeuvres far less punishing.
Leashes: Match leash type to discipline. For winging, many riders prefer waist leashes to reduce tangles. In waves or crowded areas, a quick release setup is a smart call.

Foiling protection FAQs
Do I really need a helmet for wingfoiling?
Strongly recommended. Wings, boards and foils move quickly and falls can be awkward. A well-fitting helmet is one of the easiest ways to reduce risk and increase confidence while you progress.
Impact vest or buoyancy aid — what’s better for foiling?
They do different jobs. Impact vests focus on crash protection (ribs/torso). Buoyancy aids focus on floatation. Some vests offer additional buoyancy, but always choose based on what you actually need for your sessions and local conditions.
Wrist leash or waist leash for winging?
Both work, but many wingfoilers prefer waist leashes because they’re tidy and reduce tangles. Wrist leashes can feel simple and direct. If you’re unsure, tell us how/where you ride and we’ll suggest the cleanest setup.
Should my wing leash have a quick release?
It’s a very smart feature, especially around waves, rocks, strong wind, or busy areas. A quick release gives you a safe exit option if something becomes hazardous.
What’s the most common mistake with foiling protection?
Buying the wrong size or the wrong style for the discipline. A helmet that moves, a vest that rides up, or a leash setup that tangles can all cause problems. If in doubt, ask us before you order.
