The best time to fit rail tape is before the board gets marked. New boards, premium composite SUPs, race boards, foil boards and surf SUPs are all worth protecting early, especially if they will be used regularly, transported often or shared with less experienced paddlers.

You can also add protection to a used board, but take more care with preparation. The surface should be clean, dry and free from salt, wax, grease, sand and loose damage. If there is existing damage, repair or seal it properly before applying rail tape.

For race and touring boards, clean fitting matters because the tape should sit neatly and evenly along the rail. Take your time rather than rushing the installation just before a session.

Good preparation makes a big difference. Clean the board thoroughly, let it dry, position the tape before removing the backing, and avoid applying it over wax, salt, sand, moisture or fresh repairs. Warm, dry conditions make fitting easier.

Apply slowly and work from one end to the other, smoothing as you go to avoid trapped air. Take extra care around curves, noses and rails where the tape has to follow the board shape.

If you are not confident fitting rail tape to a premium board, ask us for advice before applying it. It is always easier to fit cleanly first time than to remove and reapply after a rushed attempt.

Premium hard boards, race SUPs, touring boards, surf SUPs and foil boards benefit most from rail protection because cosmetic and impact damage can quickly reduce appearance, confidence and resale value.

Inflatable boards can also benefit from rail and paddle protection, especially if they are used often, shared in a family, carried over rough ground or loaded onto roof racks. For compact foil boards and surf boards, protection is more about vulnerable handling points and small knocks than paddle strikes alone.
