Foils

Foils & Hydrofoils at The SUP Company

If you’re new to foiling, it can feel like a different language: front wings, rear stabs, mast lengths, fuselage choices, aspect ratios… and somehow it all has to work together. The good news is this: once you match the foil to your sport (wing / surf / SUP / downwind / pump), your weight, and the conditions you actually ride, foiling becomes simpler, safer, and a lot more fun.

This collection is your hub for complete hydrofoil setups, individual foil components, and the small-but-critical spares that keep you on the water. Whether you’re building your first setup or tuning a high-performance rig, you’ll find the right parts here.

Shop foils by component

Foil Completes – the easiest way to get a balanced setup from day one (mast + fuselage + front wing + rear stabiliser in the right “family”).

Front Wings – the “engine” of your foil: lift, glide, speed and turning are shaped here more than anywhere else.

Rear Stabilisers (Rear Wings) – fine-tune stability, pitch control, turning feel and pump cadence.

Foil Masts – choose the right length for your discipline and water state (shorter = more forgiving; longer = more clearance and stability at speed).

Fuselages – your balance point: longer often feels more stable and predictable; shorter typically feels looser and more agile.

Foil Screws & Hardware – the stuff you don’t want to be missing when the wind finally turns on: bolts, screw sets and spares.

Pick a foil by what you want to do

Wingfoiling (freeride & progression): Look for predictable lift, easy take-offs and control in chop. Mid-aspect or “freeride” wings are usually the quickest route to consistent flights and confident gybes.

Surf / prone foiling: Prioritise carving feel, roll stability and control at lower speeds. More sweep and a slightly lower aspect often feels smoother in turns and more forgiving on steeper drops.

SUP foiling: If you’re prone-style surf foiling on a SUP, stability and low-speed control matter. For SUP downwinding, you’ll typically want efficient glide, strong pump and a foil that links bumps without constant effort.

Downwind foiling: Efficiency is everything. Higher-aspect wings and well-matched rear stabilisers help you hold speed between bumps, reduce stall, and extend your glide.

Pump / dock-start foiling: You’re hunting lift-to-drag efficiency and a pump-friendly feel. Foil choice here is all about cadence, low stall speed and clean recovery when you’re tired.

If you need the board side too, head here: Foil Boards (including Wing Foil Boards and Downwind Foil Boards).

Foil “shape” cheat sheet (simple but accurate)

Bigger front wing area generally = earlier lift, lower stall speed, more stability… and a lower top speed ceiling.

Higher aspect ratio generally = more glide and efficiency… but it can feel less forgiving in tight turns and sloppy technique.

More sweep often = smoother carving and control… while straighter wings often feel faster and more efficient.

Rear stabilisers are the easiest “feel” change: swapping rear wings can make a setup calmer, looser, faster, or more pump-friendly without replacing your whole foil.

A note on compatibility (this saves people money)

Foils are modular, but they’re not universal. Most brands are designed as complete systems, so mixing parts across different brands (or different series within a brand) can create fit and performance issues unless you’re using the correct adaptors and hardware. If you’re unsure, send us what you’ve got (brand + mast mount + fuselage + front/rear wings) and we’ll sanity-check your build before you order.

UK conditions: what we set foils up for

UK foiling is rarely “perfect”: gusty winds, short-period chop, and cold-water sessions where you want your kit to work first time. A stable, confidence-building setup will get you flying more often than an ultra-high-performance choice that only shines on perfect days. If you tell us your local spot, typical wind strength and your goals, we’ll point you at the sensible option (and a clear upgrade path).

Need help choosing?

Message us via the Contact page with your height/weight, ability level, what you want to do (wing/surf/SUP/downwind/pump), and what board you’re riding. We’ll recommend a setup that makes sense now and still makes sense when you level up.

Foils FAQs

What’s the easiest way to buy my first foil?

Start with a foil complete. It’s the simplest way to get a balanced, compatible setup (and avoid buying the wrong fuselage/rear stab for your front wing).

Can I mix foil parts between brands?

Sometimes, but it’s rarely plug-and-play. Most brands are designed as systems, and mixing can cause fit or performance issues unless you have the correct adaptors and hardware. If you’re unsure, ask us and we’ll check compatibility before you order.

What front wing should a beginner start with?

Most beginners progress faster on a larger, more stable front wing that lifts early and stalls gently. The “right” size depends on your weight, sport and local conditions, so message us with your details and we’ll point you at a sensible starting wing.

What mast length do I need?

Shorter masts are often more forgiving when learning and in shallow water. Longer masts give you more clearance in chop and better stability at speed, but they can be less forgiving when you’re still dialling in control. If you tell us where you ride, we’ll recommend the best compromise.

What’s the quickest way to change how my foil feels?

Rear stabilisers and fuselage length are the fastest “feel” changes (stability vs looseness). Front wings are the bigger performance change (lift/glide/speed/turning).
