Foil buying guide

Foiling can look technical from the outside, but the buying decision comes down to a few key questions: what sport are you doing, how much do you weigh, what board are you riding, what speed do you take off at, and do you need easy lift, glide, speed, turning or pump efficiency?

Use the guide below to choose between a complete hydrofoil setup and individual foil parts such as front wings, rear stabilisers, masts and fuselages.

Complete foil setup or individual foil parts?

If you are new to foiling or changing brand platform, a complete foil setup is usually the cleanest route. It gives you a matched front wing, rear stabiliser, mast and fuselage from the same compatible system, which reduces the risk of buying parts that do not fit or do not work well together.

If you already own a foil system, individual components make more sense. A new front wing can change lift, speed and glide. A different rear stabiliser can tune pitch stability, pump and turning feel. A new mast can change stiffness, clearance and control. A different fuselage can make the setup feel calmer, looser or more responsive.

Useful starting points include complete foil setups, front wings, rear stabilisers, foil masts, fuselages and foil screws and hardware.

Foils by riding style

Wing foiling

Most wing foilers need predictable lift, controlled pitch, easy take-offs and enough speed range to keep progressing through gybes, tacks and stronger wind.

Shop wing foil boards

SUP foiling

SUP foil riders usually need low-speed lift, stability and a foil that works with paddle take-off speed rather than relying on constant wing power.

Shop SUP foil boards

Downwind foiling

Downwind riders need glide, pump efficiency, low stall speed and a setup that links bumps without wasting energy.

Shop downwind foil boards

Pump, surf and dock start

Pump and surf-focused riders usually want clean glide, efficient recovery and a foil that turns without feeling unstable.

Shop pump foil and dock start kit

Electric and assist foiling

For eFoil and Foil Drive-style riding, the foil still controls glide, pitch and carving once you are flying.

Shop foil assist systems

Kite foiling

Kite foilers usually ride at higher speeds, so front wing choice, mast stiffness and stabiliser feel need to match kite-specific use.

How to choose the right front wing

The front wing creates the main lift and has the biggest influence on how early the foil takes off, how much glide it has, how fast it feels and how easily it turns. This is usually the first component to get right.

A larger front wing generally gives earlier lift, lower stall speed and more stability, but it may feel slower once you improve. A smaller front wing generally feels faster and more responsive, but it needs better technique and more speed. Higher aspect wings usually improve glide and efficiency, while lower or mid-aspect shapes often feel more forgiving and easier to turn.

Rear stabilisers, masts and fuselages explained

The rear stabiliser helps control pitch, pump and turning feel. A more stable tail can make a setup feel calmer and more predictable. A smaller or lower-drag tail can make the same foil feel faster, looser and more responsive.

The mast affects stiffness, ride height, leverage and how directly the foil responds underfoot. The fuselage sets the spacing between the front wing and rear stabiliser, changing pitch stability, turning radius and the overall balance of the foil.

To tune your setup, compare rear stabilisers, foil masts and fuselages.

Brand guidance: AXIS, Duotone, Waydoo and Neil Pryde

Different foil brands suit different riders and upgrade paths. The most important thing is to choose a system that matches your sport now, while giving you a clear route to progress without replacing everything too soon.

  • AXIS — a wide modular foil platform with front wings, rear wings, masts and fuselages for wing, SUP, surf, pump and downwind foiling.
  • Duotone Wing Foiling — strong for wing foil, freeride, surf, performance and complete Duotone ecosystem setups.
  • Waydoo — relevant for eFoil, electric foil parts and Waydoo-specific foil components.
  • Neil Pryde — useful where compatible foil parts or legacy Pryde Group components are required.

If you are comparing brands, think about rider weight, local wind, preferred discipline, compatibility, future upgrade path and how easy it will be to get the right spares.

Useful product starting points

Availability, sizes and exact compatibility can change, so always check the individual product page before ordering. These are useful starting points within the Foils collection:

If you are not sure which parts fit together, contact us before ordering and include photos or details of your current mast, fuselage, front wing, rear stabiliser and board.

Complete the setup

A foil only works properly when the rest of the setup makes sense. Board size, mast position, wing size, leash choice, impact protection and even your pump or bag can all affect how easy the session feels.

Useful related collections include foil boards, wing foil boards, downwind foil boards, SUP foil boards, wingsurfers, wing pumps, wing leashes, foil board bags, helmets and impact vests.

Try, advise, ride: getting your foil choice right

Foil choice is personal. Two riders on the same board can need different front wing sizes, stabilisers or mast lengths depending on weight, stance, ability, wind range and the feel they want underfoot.

Our Lymington Try It Now service is designed for serious wing and foil buyers who want product matching, setup advice and demo support where suitable. It is especially useful if you are comparing complete systems, upgrading foil parts or moving into Foil Drive, downwind or surf-focused setups.

Finance, delivery and support

Foils are a considered purchase, especially if you are buying a complete hydrofoil setup or upgrading several parts at once. It is worth checking compatibility, rider suitability and progression path before committing.

Foils and hydrofoils FAQs

What is a hydrofoil?

A hydrofoil is the underwater wing system that lifts the board above the surface. A typical foil includes a front wing, rear stabiliser, mast and fuselage. When water flows over the wings at speed, the foil creates lift and the board rises above the water.

Which foil should I buy as a beginner?

Most beginners should start with a forgiving complete foil setup that gives early lift, stable pitch and predictable control. Avoid going too small or too performance-focused too early, as this can make learning much harder.

Is a bigger foil front wing better?

A bigger front wing usually gives earlier lift and more low-speed stability, which helps beginners and heavier riders. It is not always better, though. As you improve, a smaller or more efficient wing may feel faster, more responsive and easier to control in stronger wind.

Can I mix foil parts from different brands?

Usually not. Foil parts are normally brand and system specific. Front wings, rear stabilisers, masts and fuselages must match the correct connection system, screw pattern and generation. If you are unsure, ask before ordering.

What is the difference between a front wing and rear stabiliser?

The front wing creates most of the lift and strongly affects take-off speed, glide, turning and overall feel. The rear stabiliser balances the foil and tunes pitch stability, pump and responsiveness.

What mast length should I choose?

Shorter masts are often easier for learning and shallow-water starts. Longer masts give more ride height, more room to handle chop and better clearance once you are confident. The right length depends on your discipline, launch spot, water depth and ability.

Should I buy a complete foil setup or upgrade individual parts?

Buy a complete foil setup if you are starting from scratch or changing brand platform. Upgrade individual parts if you already have a compatible foil system and know what you want to improve, such as lift, glide, speed, pump or turning feel.

Can The SUP Company help me choose the right foil?
