Description

The Black Project Ray Fin is the Black Project fin to choose when your main goal is to make the board feel calmer, track straighter and carry speed more confidently over distance. If you paddle touring boards, race boards or fast iSUPs and you want more control without making the board feel dull, the Ray is a very smart upgrade.

Where some fins in the range lean towards agility and more advanced ocean handling, the Ray sits at the confidence-building end of the spectrum. It is particularly good for intermediate paddlers, anyone stepping onto a narrower board, or riders who are tired of spending too much energy on correction strokes in choppy or windy water.

Why choose the Ray?

  • More stability in real conditions – especially helpful in side chop, unsettled water and breezier flat-water sessions
  • Straighter tracking – fewer correction strokes and fewer unnecessary side changes
  • Better glide between strokes – ideal for touring, fitness paddling and longer efforts
  • Excellent upgrade for touring and race iSUPs – particularly where the stock fin feels basic or underwhelming
  • Confidence on narrower boards – helps the board feel more settled and easier to paddle well

Where it sits in the Black Project fin range

  • Choose the Ray if your priority is tracking, stability and relaxed control over distance
  • Choose the Tiger if you want a faster, more race-driven fin with sharper buoy turns
  • Choose the Maliko if your paddling is more ocean and downwind oriented
  • Choose the Sonic if you are an experienced paddler prioritising agility and flow in technical conditions

FAQs

Who is the Black Project Ray best suited to?

It is ideal for paddlers who want more stability, straighter tracking and easier glide over distance. It makes particular sense for intermediate paddlers, anyone moving onto a narrower board, or riders paddling in choppy and windy water.

Is the Ray a good fin upgrade for inflatable touring or race boards?

Yes. It is a very worthwhile upgrade on many touring and race iSUPs because it improves tracking and board calmness in a way stock fins often do not.

How does the Ray compare with the Tiger?

The Ray is the more stability-focused and tracking-led fin. The Tiger is quicker and more race-reactive, especially if buoy turns and faster race handling matter more to you.

Specifications

  • Features

    Deep Foil Concept (DFC)
This is a big part of why the Ray feels so composed. Black Project has concentrated the foil deeper in the water, which improves stability and tracking while keeping the board feeling efficient rather than draggy.

    Large outline with thicker foil
At 24cm deep, the Ray is designed to give you a more planted feel. On the water, that means less wobble, less wandering off line and a more settled platform when conditions are less than perfect.

45° leading edge and curved outline
The Ray sheds weed and debris better than a more upright fin, which is a real benefit in many UK paddling spots. It also makes subtle foot-steering adjustments easier, so you can keep the board running straighter without over-correcting.

    Reduced Cord Concept (RCC)
The shorter chord gives you more tuning room in the fin box. Slide it forwards for a touch more looseness and manoeuvrability, or move it back for maximum tracking and hold.

    30T Pre-Preg carbon construction
This is a premium carbon fin, not a basic moulded plastic replacement. It feels lighter, more precise and more responsive on the water, which is exactly what you want from an upgrade fin.
