Duotone Foil Assist Compatibility Guide: Which Foils Work With It?

One of the cleverest features of the Duotone Foil Assist system is that you do not necessarily need to replace the foil platform you already own.

If you currently ride Duotone, Armstrong, AXIS, Code Foils, F-One, KT, North or several other foil brands, there may be a compatible route into the Duotone Foil Assist ecosystem.

Duotone Foil Assist electric foil system

That can allow you to keep the front wings, stabilisers and foil feel you already know while adding an integrated electric-assist mast.

Armstrong riders have a particularly interesting option. Rather than using a simple Armstrong mast adapter, Duotone produces a dedicated 60cm Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong that works with Armstrong A+ Wing Sets.

There is, however, one important warning:

Do not assume every adapter or fuselage works with every Duotone Foil Assist mast or every generation of third-party foil.

The Foil Assist AL, Foil Cruise AL and Foil Assist D/LAB do not share identical foil compatibility. The Armstrong solution also works differently from most of the other brand adapters.

This guide explains the main compatibility routes and what you should check before ordering.

Quick answer: which foils work with Duotone Foil Assist?

The aluminium Duotone Foil Assist mast platform has compatibility routes for foil brands including:

  • Duotone;
  • Armstrong;
  • AXIS;
  • Code Foils;
  • F-One;
  • KT;
  • North;
  • AFS;
  • SAB Foil;
  • Gong;
  • Lift.

Most of these use a brand-specific fuselage adapter between the aluminium eMast and the rider’s existing foil system.

Armstrong is different. Armstrong riders use the dedicated Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong. When it is paired with a Foil Assist AL or Foil Cruise AL mast, the separate Duotone fuselage adapter is also required. With the Foil Assist D/LAB mast, the Armstrong eFuselage connects through its 3BS interface without that additional aluminium-mast adapter.

Always confirm the foil brand, wing system, fuselage generation and Foil Assist mast before buying.

Why buy through a specialist foil retailer?

Foil Assist compatibility is not simply a case of matching two brand names.

At The SUP Company, we look at the complete build: the board, mast, adapter, fuselage, front wing, stabiliser, rider weight and intended use. This matters because a setup can be mechanically compatible without being particularly well suited to assisted prone, downwind or light-wind wing foiling.

We support technical foil equipment through our bricks-and-mortar stores and selected equipment can be demonstrated through Try It Now at The SUP Co x Lymington.

How does the Duotone Foil Assist adapter system work?

The electric motor, folding propeller and power cable are integrated into the Duotone eMast.

Duotone Foil Assist AL mast and equipment

The bottom of the mast must then connect to the foil system beneath it. With the aluminium mast platforms, that connection is normally created by a brand-specific fuselage adapter.

A typical aluminium-mast build is:

foil board → Foil Assist AL or Foil Cruise AL eMast → brand-specific adapter → compatible foil components.

The exact components retained beneath the adapter vary between brands. This is why it is better to provide the complete name of your foil and fuselage rather than simply saying, for example, “I have an AXIS foil”.

How the Armstrong connection differs

Armstrong compatibility is created using a complete, purpose-built 60cm fuselage rather than a small Armstrong-specific adapter.

With an aluminium mast, the build is:

foil board → Foil Assist AL or Foil Cruise AL eMast → Duotone fuselage adapter → Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong → compatible Armstrong A+ Wing Set.

With the D/LAB mast, the build is simpler:

foil board → Foil Assist D/LAB eMast → Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong → compatible Armstrong A+ Wing Set.

This distinction is important. Ordering the Armstrong eFuselage alone is not enough for an aluminium Foil Assist mast; the separate Duotone adapter is also required.

Board compatibility: what board do you need?

The Duotone Foil Assist eMasts mount to foil boards using standard twin US foil tracks. This means a large number of modern foil boards can physically accept the mast.

Physical fit is only the starting point. The board must also be appropriate in terms of:

  • foil-track position;
  • strength around the foil boxes;
  • board volume;
  • length and width;
  • ability to accelerate cleanly;
  • intended foiling discipline;
  • rider weight and experience.

An efficient mid-length board such as the Duotone Midfish makes particular sense because its longer, narrower shape builds speed efficiently before take-off.

Duotone foil compatibility

If you want to stay completely within the Duotone ecosystem, the Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – Duotone provides the connection required for the aluminium Foil Assist mast platform.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for Duotone foils

This is generally the most straightforward route for somebody who already owns compatible modern Duotone foil components.

The Foil Assist D/LAB mast has a moulded 3BS connection and therefore uses compatible Duotone 3BS fuselages directly. Do not order an aluminium-mast adapter for a D/LAB build unless it is specifically required by the chosen configuration.

Armstrong foil compatibility

Duotone has developed the Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong specifically for riders who want to combine Armstrong A+ Wing Sets with Duotone Foil Assist.

Duotone eFuselage Armstrong for Duotone Foil Assist

The dedicated aluminium fuselage measures 60cm, or 24 inches, and uses a 3BS mast connection.

It is compatible with all three Duotone Foil Assist mast options, but the required connection depends on the mast:

  • Foil Assist D/LAB: the Armstrong eFuselage connects directly through the D/LAB mast’s 3BS interface.
  • Foil Assist AL: the Armstrong eFuselage works, but the separate Duotone fuselage adapter is also required.
  • Foil Cruise AL: the Armstrong eFuselage again requires the separate Duotone fuselage adapter.

This gives established Armstrong riders a proper manufacturer-developed route into Foil Assist without having to replace their complete Armstrong wing collection.

It can make particular sense for riders using Foil Assist for:

  • assisted prone-foil take-offs;
  • downwind starts and linking bumps;
  • wake foiling;
  • light-wind wing foiling;
  • increasing the number of usable runs in marginal conditions.

Choose the Armstrong eFuselage if you want to retain compatible Armstrong A+ front and rear wings. Do not confuse it with a simple mast adapter or assume it works with every historic Armstrong component.

AXIS compatibility

Many AXIS riders have already invested in several front wings, rear wings and fuselage options.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for AXIS foils

The Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – AXIS allows compatible AXIS foil setups to connect to the aluminium Foil Assist mast platform.

This means you can potentially retain the AXIS foil character you already understand rather than rebuilding the complete setup around another foil system.

It is especially relevant for prone, downwind, pump, surf and light-wind wing-foil riders. Read our AXIS Wing Foil Setup Guide if you are also choosing the foil itself.

Code Foils compatibility

The Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – Code gives Code Foils riders an aluminium-mast compatibility route.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for Code Foils

This is particularly attractive for surf and downwind riders who already know which Code front wing and tail combination works for them.

F-One compatibility

Duotone offers a dedicated F-One Foil Assist fuselage adapter for compatible foil setups using the aluminium Foil Assist mast platform.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for F-One foils

F-One has used different foil connections and generations, so send us the precise mast, fuselage and wing details before ordering. The existence of an F-One adapter does not mean every historic F-One foil component is automatically compatible.

KT compatibility

KT riders can use the Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – KT with compatible aluminium Foil Assist mast setups.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for KT foils

This can be a useful route for somebody already using a KT surf or downwind setup who wants electric assistance without unnecessarily changing the foil underneath them.

North compatibility

The Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – North provides an aluminium-mast connection for compatible North foil systems.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for North foils

Confirm the exact North fuselage generation before ordering rather than relying on the brand name alone.

AFS compatibility

The Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – AFS allows compatible AFS foil components to connect to the aluminium Foil Assist mast system.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for AFS foils

This is another example of how the aluminium Duotone system can support riders who already have a developed foil quiver.

SAB Foil compatibility

The Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – SAB Foil provides a route for compatible SAB Foil systems using the aluminium Assist mast.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for SAB Foil

If you already own several SAB front wings, retaining those wings may make adding Foil Assist considerably more attractive.

Gong compatibility

A dedicated Duotone Foil Assist Adapter Fuselage – Gong is available for compatible Gong foil setups using the aluminium Foil Assist platform.

Duotone Foil Assist fuselage adapter for Gong foils

As with the other brands, confirm the precise Gong foil generation because brand-level compatibility should not be taken to mean that every older component will fit.

Lift compatibility

Duotone also offers a Lift-specific adapter route for compatible Lift foils using the Foil Assist AL and Foil Cruise AL mast platforms.

Lift should therefore be treated as an aluminium-mast compatibility option rather than assumed to work directly with the D/LAB mast.

Browse the current Duotone Foil Assist adapters and accessories or contact us with the exact Lift mast, fuselage and wing generation before ordering.

Duotone Foil Assist compatibility table

Foil brand Foil Assist AL / Cruise AL route Foil Assist D/LAB route Important check
Duotone Duotone fuselage adapter required Compatible 3BS fuselage connects directly Confirm the exact Duotone fuselage and wing generation
Armstrong Armstrong eFuselage plus separate Duotone adapter Armstrong eFuselage connects directly Designed for compatible Armstrong A+ Wing Sets
AXIS AXIS-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the precise AXIS fuselage system
Code Foils Code-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the exact Code setup
F-One F-One-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Foil generation is particularly important
KT KT-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the exact KT fuselage
North North-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the North foil generation
AFS AFS-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the complete AFS setup
SAB Foil SAB-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the mast and fuselage generation
Gong Gong-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the foil generation
Lift Lift-specific adapter route Not through the standard AL adapter Confirm the exact Lift system before ordering

“Not through the standard AL adapter” does not necessarily mean that no specialist or future option will ever exist. It means you should not assume that an adapter sold for the aluminium mast can be transferred to D/LAB.

Foil Assist AL vs D/LAB compatibility

This is one of the most important distinctions in the entire system.

Foil Assist AL and Foil Cruise AL

The aluminium eMasts have the broadest compatibility because Duotone offers a range of brand-specific fuselage adapters.

A fuselage adapter is not normally included with the mast set and must be selected separately for the foil system you intend to use.

Foil Assist D/LAB

The Duotone Foil Assist D/LAB uses a premium carbon mast with a moulded 3BS connection.

Its standard compatibility route is much narrower than the aluminium platform. It is designed to connect to compatible Duotone 3BS fuselages and the purpose-built Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong.

Do not assume that an AXIS, Code, F-One, KT, North, AFS, SAB, Gong or Lift adapter intended for the aluminium eMast will work with D/LAB.

This is exactly the sort of relatively small component that can delay a complete premium setup when compatibility has been assumed rather than checked.

Can I use my existing foil front wing?

Potentially, yes. Retaining an existing wing system is one of the main reasons these adapters and the Armstrong eFuselage exist.

Compatibility and suitability are not the same thing, though.

Your front wing may connect mechanically but still be a poor Foil Assist choice if it is:

  • too small for your weight or ability;
  • very high in stall speed;
  • inefficient during take-off;
  • poorly matched to the board;
  • designed for a different foiling discipline;
  • unbalanced with the chosen stabiliser or fuselage.

For the Foil Assist AL system, a front wing of around 900cm² or larger is a sensible starting point for efficient battery use, although the ideal wing depends on rider weight, board, conditions and experience.

Can I use my existing foil board?

If your board has suitable standard twin US foil tracks, it may accept the Duotone eMast.

We still need to consider:

  • foil-track position;
  • board construction;
  • board volume;
  • how easily the board accelerates;
  • your body weight;
  • whether you intend to prone, downwind, wake or wing foil.

A board that works brilliantly for conventional wing foiling may not be the most efficient choice for prone or downwind Foil Assist use.

Can I use one Foil Assist system with several foil brands?

Potentially, particularly with the modular aluminium mast platform.

An experienced rider could use one compatible Foil Assist AL mast with different brand adapters and foil systems. Armstrong riders would use the complete Armstrong eFuselage together with the Duotone adapter rather than a small Armstrong adapter.

Swapping between systems increases the importance of using the correct hardware, following the specified torque settings and checking every connection before entering the water.

Which Duotone Foil Assist mast should you choose?

Foil Assist AL

Choose the 84cm Foil Assist AL if you already foil and want the widest choice of compatible foil brands at a more accessible price than D/LAB.

Foil Cruise AL

Choose the 80cm Foil Cruise AL if easier progression, controlled cruising and sustained electric assistance are more important than the most surf-orientated response.

Foil Assist D/LAB

Choose Foil Assist D/LAB if you are an experienced rider prioritising lower weight, lower drag and premium mast response, and you intend to use compatible Duotone components or the dedicated Armstrong eFuselage.

What we need to confirm compatibility

If you are unsure, send the Lymington team:

  • your foil brand;
  • front-wing model and size;
  • rear-wing or stabiliser model;
  • fuselage model and length;
  • approximate model year;
  • a clear photograph of the mast-to-fuselage connection;
  • your board model and volume;
  • your body weight;
  • the type of foiling you want to do;
  • whether you are considering Foil Assist AL, Cruise AL or D/LAB.

For Armstrong riders, please also confirm whether your components use the Armstrong A+ System.

That information is normally enough for us to sanity-check the proposed build before you spend money on the wrong component.

Try Duotone Foil Assist at Lymington

Selected Duotone Foil Assist equipment is supported through Try It Now at The SUP Co x Lymington.

This is particularly useful when comparing premium mast systems, deciding whether to retain an existing foil or working out which board and front wing will suit your weight and intended use.

Finance options are available on qualifying orders, which can be useful when investing in a complete Foil Assist setup. Availability can vary between individual mast, fuselage and adapter components, so contact us if timing is important.

Duotone Foil Assist compatibility FAQs

Can Duotone Foil Assist work with Armstrong foils?

Yes. The dedicated 60cm Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong is designed for compatible Armstrong A+ Wing Sets. It connects directly to the Foil Assist D/LAB mast. When used with the Foil Assist AL or Foil Cruise AL mast, the separate Duotone fuselage adapter is also required.

Is the Duotone eFuselage – Armstrong just a mast adapter?

No. It is a complete 60cm aluminium fuselage developed for compatible Armstrong wing sets. This is different from the smaller brand-specific adapters used with many other foil platforms.

Can I use the Armstrong eFuselage with Foil Assist D/LAB?

Yes. The Armstrong eFuselage has a 3BS connection and is the dedicated Armstrong-compatible fuselage route for the D/LAB mast.

Do I need another adapter with the Armstrong eFuselage?

You need the separate Duotone fuselage adapter when using the Armstrong eFuselage with a Foil Assist AL or Foil Cruise AL mast. You do not need that additional adapter when connecting it directly to the D/LAB mast.

Can Duotone Foil Assist work with an AXIS foil?

Yes. Duotone offers an AXIS-specific adapter for compatible AXIS foil setups using the aluminium Foil Assist mast platform. Check the exact AXIS fuselage and generation before ordering.

Can Duotone Foil Assist work with Code Foils?
