Description

The Duotone Foil Assist Set D/LAB is the premium carbon version of Duotone’s Foil Assist system, designed for riders who want more take-offs, more flying time and more usable sessions without moving into a full eFoil setup.

This is the high-performance option in the range. You still ride, pump, foil and control the board like normal, but the integrated motor gives you a controlled boost when you need it most. That might be getting up in marginal wind, linking weaker bumps, recovering from mistakes, or squeezing more out of a short session.

The key difference with the D/LAB version is feel. The carbon eMast gives a lighter, stiffer and more responsive ride than the aluminium version, making it the better choice for riders who care about feedback, pump efficiency and keeping the foil feeling as natural as possible.

Watch Our Duotone Foil Assist Review

We have reviewed the Duotone Foil Assist system properly through The SUP Company YouTube channel, including how the AL and D/LAB versions compare and who each setup is best suited to. If you are deciding between the two, this video is well worth watching before you buy.

Where The D/LAB Sits In The Duotone Foil Assist Range

The D/LAB set is the premium rider-focused option in the Duotone Foil Assist range. It uses the same clever waist-mounted battery concept and ring remote control as the AL version, but upgrades the mast to Duotone’s carbon D/LAB construction for a lighter, stiffer and more refined ride feel.

Choose the D/LAB if you already foil well and want the cleanest, most performance-led Foil Assist setup. It is especially well suited to wing foilers, prone foilers, SUP foilers, downwind riders and parawing riders who want the motor to help without making the board feel heavy or disconnected.

If you want the best value route into the system, the Duotone Foil Assist Set AL is the sensible place to start. If you want the lightest, stiffest and most responsive version, the D/LAB is the one to choose.

D/LAB vs AL: Which Duotone Foil Assist Set Should You Choose?

Model Best For Why Choose It?
Duotone Foil Assist Set D/LAB Performance-focused riders Carbon mast, lighter feel, stiffer response and the most natural foil feedback.
Duotone Foil Assist Set AL Most riders wanting best value Aluminium mast, same battery and remote concept, excellent performance at a lower price point.

The AL version is not the “basic” option in a negative sense. It is a very capable Foil Assist system and will be the right choice for plenty of riders. The D/LAB version is for riders who are more sensitive to mast stiffness, weight, pump response and the way the foil loads through turns.

In simple terms, choose AL if you want strong value and proven performance. Choose D/LAB if you want the most refined ride feel and you know you will notice the difference.

Why Choose The Duotone Foil Assist Set D/LAB?

  • Premium carbon mast feel: lighter, stiffer and more responsive than the aluminium version.
  • More take-offs: helps you get flying earlier in lighter wind, weaker swell or harder launch conditions.
  • More time on foil: link sections, recover from mistakes and keep momentum when the conditions fade.
  • Cleaner board feel: batteries sit on your waist rather than in the board, helping preserve natural foilboard handling.
  • Motor integrated into the mast: keeps the setup clean and avoids the bulk of external pod systems.
  • Excellent progression tool: ideal for riders working on downwind starts, parawing starts, smaller boards or smaller foil setups.
  • Cross-brand compatibility: works with a range of foil brands via the correct adapter fuselage, sold separately.

2-Blade vs 3-Blade Propeller: Why It Matters

Propeller choice changes how the Duotone Foil Assist system feels. The standard 2-blade style is generally the cleaner, lower-drag option and suits riders who want Foil Assist to stay subtle, natural and glide-focused.

The 3-blade option gives a stronger, more obvious thrust feel. It suits riders who want more bite from the motor during starts, low-speed acceleration and more technical take-offs.

In plain English, the 2-blade feels more discreet. The 3-blade feels more deliberate. Neither is automatically better; it depends on whether you value the cleanest possible glide or stronger assistance when the motor engages.

For a full explanation, read our guide: Duotone Foil Assist 2-Blade vs 3-Blade Propeller – Which One Should You Choose?

Should You Upgrade To The 3-Blade Propeller?

The D/LAB set is likely to appeal to riders who care deeply about glide and natural foil feel, so the standard 2-blade route will still make the most sense for many. It keeps the system cleaner and closer to Duotone’s original Foil Assist idea: helpful, but not intrusive.

The Duotone ePropeller 3-Blade SLS with Mount becomes interesting if you want stronger low-speed drive, more obvious thrust and a more planted response when the motor comes in. It can make sense for heavier riders, smaller boards, smaller foils, sinkier starts or riders who want the assist to feel more active.

The trade-off is glide purity. If you are choosing D/LAB because you want the cleanest, most refined feel, the 2-blade option is the better starting point. If you are choosing Foil Assist because you want stronger help and easier repeatability, the 3-blade can be a very useful tuning upgrade.

Compatibility & What You Will Need

  • Foil board required: you will need a foil board with standard twin US foil tracks.
  • Foil required: this is the assist system only, not a complete foil package.
  • Fuselage adapter required: a brand-specific adapter is needed to connect the D/LAB mast to your foil.
  • Setup matters: rider weight, board volume, foil size, mast position and riding style all affect how the system will feel.

Choose Your Adapter

If you are unsure which adapter you need, send us your foil brand and model, or a clear photo of your fuselage connection, and we will point you towards the right part.

Recommended Setup

Foil Assist works best when the board and foil are efficient enough to release cleanly. A midlength-style foil board is often a very good match because it gives you glide, early release and easier starts without feeling like a full eFoil board.

The Duotone Midfish is the obvious Duotone board pairing for many riders. For foils, higher-efficiency wings such as the Duotone Glide 2.0 SLS Front Wing or Duotone Glide 2.0 D/LAB Front Wing make a lot of sense if your aim is easier pumping, better glide and longer links.

Helpful Reading & Buying Advice

FAQs

Is the Duotone Foil Assist Set D/LAB a full eFoil?

No. It is a foil assist system, not a full eFoil. You still ride and control the foil like normal; the motor simply helps you get up, keep momentum and stay flying when conditions or board choice would normally make it harder.

What is the main difference between the D/LAB and AL versions?

The D/LAB version uses a carbon mast for a lighter, stiffer and more responsive feel. The AL version uses an aluminium mast and is the better value route into the system. Both use the same general waist battery and remote concept, but the D/LAB is the more refined performance option.

Who should choose the D/LAB instead of the AL version?

Choose the D/LAB if you already foil well, care about mast stiffness and feedback, and want the most natural ride feel possible. Choose the AL version if you want excellent Foil Assist performance at a lower price point and are less concerned about the premium carbon mast feel.

Do I need a special board?

You need a foil board with standard twin US foil tracks. Beyond that, board choice depends on your rider weight, ability, discipline and how easy you want take-offs to be. Efficient midlength foil boards such as the Duotone Midfish are particularly well suited to Foil Assist use.

Which harness size should I choose?

S–M fits approx. 71–89cm / 28"–35" waists. L–XXL fits approx. 89–114cm / 35"–45" waists. If you are between sizes and plan to wear the harness over a thicker winter wetsuit, sizing up is usually the more comfortable choice.

How long does the Duotone Foil Assist Set D/LAB run for?

Typical assisted runtime is around 35–60 minutes, depending on rider weight, foil efficiency, board choice, conditions and how much power you use. Most riders use the motor in short bursts for take-offs, links and recovery rather than holding power constantly.

Can I fly with the batteries?

The 7Ah battery format is designed around a compact, travel-conscious capacity, but airline rules vary and can change. Always check your airline’s current lithium battery policy before travelling.

Should I use a 2-blade or 3-blade propeller?

The 2-blade route is generally cleaner, lower drag and more natural-feeling, which suits many D/LAB riders. The 3-blade option gives stronger bite and a more obvious assist feel. If you want the system to stay subtle, start with the 2-blade style. If you want stronger low-speed drive and more help on starts, consider the Duotone ePropeller 3-Blade SLS with Mount. Our full Duotone Foil Assist 2-Blade vs 3-Blade Propeller guide explains the difference in detail.

What do I need to make it compatible with my foil?

You need the correct brand-specific fuselage adapter for your foil. If you tell us your foil brand and model, or send a clear photo of your fuselage connection, we can help you choose the right adapter.

Can The SUP Company help me choose between D/LAB and AL?

Yes. Tell us your weight, discipline, current board, foil model and where you ride, and we will recommend the most sensible route. For some riders the AL set is the better value choice. For others, especially those chasing the cleanest and most responsive feel, the D/LAB upgrade is worth it.

  • Features

84cm Carbon D/LAB eMast With Integrated Motor

The D/LAB carbon mast is the main reason to choose this version over the AL set. It is designed to feel lighter, stiffer and more direct underfoot. That matters when you are pumping, carving, loading the foil through turns or riding smaller, more efficient setups where feedback is important.

    Integrated Motor Design

The motor sits inside the mast system rather than being strapped to the board or mounted as a bulky external pod. This keeps the whole setup cleaner through the water and helps preserve the feeling of riding a normal foilboard.

    Waist-Worn Battery System

The batteries sit in the Duotone eHarness Set around your waist rather than being built into the board. This helps keep weight out of the board, so the board remains lively, responsive and easier to pump.

    eRemote Watch Ring Control

Power is controlled by the Duotone eRemote Watch Ring Set. The watch-style remote and finger trigger give you controlled access to the motor while still allowing you to paddle, handle a wing or manage your board normally.

    7Ah Battery Format

The set includes 2 x Duotone Foil Assist 7Ah Batteries. These are compact compared with traditional full eFoil batteries and are intended to support the Foil Assist concept: short, useful bursts of power rather than constant powered riding.

    Brand-Specific Adapter System

The D/LAB set requires the correct fuselage adapter to connect the mast to your foil. This means you can often keep the foil brand you already ride, provided the correct adapter is available. If you are unsure which adapter you need, contact us before ordering and we can help check compatibility.
