How to Transport a Hard Paddleboard on a Roof Rack: Complete UK SUP Guide

The SUP Company |

Hard paddleboards need secure, padded transport. Follow the vehicle, roof-bar and strap manufacturers' instructions and rated load limits. A 12'6 or 14' touring or race SUP needs particular care because of its length and wind exposure.

Before loading

Inspect roof-bar fittings and the board for damage. Clean grit from contact points and fit rack pads. Check the board's recommended orientation and whether its fin should be removed. Verify vehicle load limits and any UK rules for projecting loads.

Position and strap the board

Centre the board, distribute weight over both bars and keep the nose, tail and fin clear of the car. Use suitable roof-rack straps at both bars, routed according to the strap instructions. Protect the rails from buckles, avoid twists and tie off loose ends. Tighten enough to prevent movement without crushing or marking the board. Add nose or tail restraints when required by the rack or load geometry.

Before driving

Check the board cannot move, the straps and bars are secure, and your lights and view remain unobstructed. Recheck after a short distance and at stops. Allow extra height clearance and account for crosswinds. Do not exceed your vehicle's or rack's carrying limits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I carry a 14ft SUP on a car?

Only where the vehicle and rack can safely accommodate it, the load is properly secured and applicable overhang rules are met.

Should I remove the fin?

Follow the board and rack instructions; removing a detachable fin often helps with clearance.

How tight should straps be?

Secure enough to stop movement, but never so tight that the board deforms or its rails are damaged.
