Starboard Touring Starlite vs Lite Tech: hardboard construction compared

Choosing a Starboard touring hardboard is not just a question of 12’6 or 14 feet. The 2026 Touring Starlite and 14’0 Touring Lite Tech share a 14’0 x 30” touring size, but use different construction layouts. Here is what that means when you are choosing a board for longer paddles around the UK.

At The SUP Company, we help paddlers compare board shape, build, carrying and storage before they commit to a rigid board. Where suitable equipment is available, you can also compare boards on sheltered water at our Woodmill SUP Test Centre.

The short answer

  • Choose Starlite if you want a full Australian pine deck sandwiched between glass skins, plus woven rail protection. It is available as a 12’6 x 31” and a 14’0 x 30”.
  • Choose Lite Tech if you want a 14’0 x 30” touring board with pine concentrated in the standing area and reinforcement at the rails, nose, stringers and inserts.
  • Comparing the two 14-foot boards? Their listed size and volume match at 14’0 x 30” and 298 litres, so focus on construction, included carry strap and current price rather than expecting a different size or purpose.

What is different about the construction?

Touring Starlite: full wood deck and woven rail protection

Starboard’s Starlite construction uses a full deck of 0.6mm Australian pine, sandwiched between two glass outer skins. The Touring Starlite also has woven rail protection designed to resist scratches and impacts. In practical terms, the wood reinforcement covers the deck rather than just the standing zone, with extra protection around the rails.

The 12’6 x 31” Starlite is the more manoeuvrable option and may be easier to store and handle ashore. The 14’0 x 30” gives you a longer waterline for steady distance paddling. The product listing gives volumes of 279 litres and 298 litres respectively.

Touring Lite Tech: reinforcement focused on key areas

Lite Tech uses unidirectional stringer bands for rigidity, added rail and nose reinforcement, and Australian pine in the standing area where impact resistance and stiffness are particularly useful. High-density foam reinforces the inserts. This is a more localised reinforcement layout than Starlite’s full wood deck.

The 14’0 Touring Lite Tech is listed at 14’0 x 30”, 298 litres and approximately 14.8kg. It has inserts for Starboard’s 2-in-1 shoulder strap, but the strap is sold separately. Starboard also notes that Lite Tech Touring boards do not have rear bungee inserts, so plan luggage around the front cargo area.

Which one makes more sense for your paddling?

Choose the 12’6 Touring Starlite if…

  • You want a rigid touring board but prefer a shorter, slightly wider option.
  • You paddle varied routes where easier handling on the water and ashore matters.
  • You want Starlite’s full wood deck and woven rail protection.

Choose a 14’0 Touring board if…

  • You regularly paddle longer routes and want the efficiency of a longer waterline.
  • You have suitable transport and full-length storage for a rigid board.
  • You are comfortable handling a 14-foot board in crosswinds and when launching.

For a 14-foot Starlite versus Lite Tech decision, both listings share the same 30-inch width and 298-litre volume. Starlite gives you the full-deck wood sandwich and woven rail protection; Lite Tech puts wood and reinforcement in selected areas. Check the current product listings for price, size selection and availability before ordering, as stock and delivery timing can vary by variant.

Hardboard practicalities in the UK

A composite board takes more planning than an inflatable. Measure the full storage route, check roof-bar spacing and padding, and consider the walk from your parking spot to the water. On exposed coast or tidal water, a touring shape still needs sensible conditions, a suitable leash and a route matched to your experience.

If a rigid board would be awkward to store or transport, compare the Starboard Touring Deluxe Lite inflatable or browse the wider touring paddleboard range.

Try before you choose

Dimensions and construction specifications help narrow the decision, but a demo can tell you whether a 14-foot board feels manageable for you. Ask us about current hardboard demo availability at the Woodmill SUP Test Centre. We can help compare board size, construction, paddle and intended routes. Finance options are available on qualifying orders and may help when investing in a complete setup.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Starboard Starlite and Lite Tech?

Starlite has a full 0.6mm Australian pine deck between two glass outer skins, with woven rail protection. Lite Tech uses pine in the standing area alongside stringer bands and targeted rail, nose and insert reinforcement.

Are the 14’0 Starlite and Lite Tech the same size?

Both are listed at 14’0 x 30” and 298 litres. The Starlite range also includes a 12’6 x 31” option at 279 litres.

Is the 14’0 Touring Lite Tech a good first hardboard?

It can suit a newer paddler who specifically wants to cover distance and is comfortable with a 14-foot board. For short, casual paddles or easier transport, consider whether a shorter or inflatable board would fit better. Your weight, balance, routes and conditions all matter.

Does the Touring Lite Tech include a carry strap?

It has inserts for Starboard’s 2-in-1 shoulder strap, but the strap is sold separately. The Touring Starlite construction includes the 2-in-1 strap.

Can I try a Starboard Touring board before buying?

Ask us about current demo equipment at Woodmill. Suitable boards, sizes and demo availability can vary, so check with the team before travelling.
