Storm Season Surfing: From Paddleboard to Foil – A UK Rider’s Guide

Storm Season Surfing: From Paddleboard to Foil – A UK Rider’s Guide

Tony Jones |

When winter storms line up across the Atlantic, the UK comes alive. Clean swell, powerful beach breaks, empty line-ups and conditions that reward those willing to adapt.

At The SUP Company, we don’t see storm season as time off the water. We see it as an opportunity — to progress, to learn new skills, and to unlock wave riding in ways that suit real UK conditions.

This guide is your zero-to-hero overview of how paddlers move from flatwater into waves, covering Surf SUP, surfboards and surf foiling, and how each fits into a realistic progression path.

Why Winter Is the Best Time to Learn in the UK

  • Longer-period Atlantic swell
  • More consistent wave energy
  • Cleaner offshore wind windows
  • Far less crowded beaches

For paddlers, this means more feedback from the ocean and faster learning. You don’t need perfect tropical waves — you need repetition, space and the right equipment.

Three Ways to Ride Waves in the UK

1. Surf SUP – The Easiest Crossover

Surf SUP is the natural entry point for paddleboarders looking to ride waves. You already have balance, paddle control and water awareness — surf-style SUP boards simply adapt those skills to moving water.

2. Surfboards – Going Prone, Done Properly

For those who want a more traditional surfing feel, surfboards open up faster reactions and tighter turns. The key in the UK is choosing boards with enough volume to paddle efficiently in cold water and thicker wetsuits.

3. Surf Foiling – Maximum Glide, Minimal Wave

Surf foiling changes everything. Knee-high waves become long, gliding rides, making foiling a powerful option for UK winter conditions.

Try Before You Buy: The Smarter Way to Progress

Wave equipment is personal. Volume, shape and foil choice all make a huge difference — and guessing often leads to frustration.

Cold Water Surfing: Choosing The Right Wetsuit

We won't sugar coat it; you are in the UK, it is going to be cold.

If you want to make the most of your time in the water and extend your sessions, your wetsuit is your most important piece of equipment.

Key Considerations

1. Thickness - Although some surfers will brave a 4/3mm suit all year round, a 5mm suit is the ideal thickness to keep you warm throughout the winter.

2. Seams - The type of seam on your suit is going to determine how watertight it is, and thus how warm you are going to remain. Winter wetsuit seams will range from simple flatlock stitching, to glued, taped and sealed seams.

3. Lining - Modern thermal linings are a big deal. Two suits can both be “5/4” and feel totally different — one dries faster, feels warmer, and stays comfortable longer because of the lining.

4. Flexibility - It is easy to lose your flexibility with winter wetsuits, ultimately impacting your performance. Look for suits known for flexibility and smart panel layouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Surf SUP easier than surfing?

Yes. For most paddlers, Surf SUP is the easiest way into waves. Existing balance and paddle skills allow earlier wave entry and faster progression, especially in UK conditions.

Can I surf foil in small UK waves?

Absolutely. Surf foiling works exceptionally well in knee to chest-high waves, making it ideal for typical UK swell when paired with the right setup.

Is winter surfing safe in the UK?

Yes, with the right equipment and planning. A suitable wetsuit, leash, local knowledge and realistic conditions are key to safe winter sessions.

Do I need lessons before surf foiling?

Surf foiling has a steeper learning curve than Surf SUP or surfing. Structured coaching or expert advice significantly improves safety and progression.

What’s the best way to try surf equipment before buying?

Booking a demo session allows you to test boards and foils in real conditions and receive tailored advice before committing to a purchase.
