Wetsuit vs drysuit. What are the differences and what does our instructor Georgie think about both and what does she prefer?

Paddleboarding, an increasingly popular water sport, allows enthusiasts to glide across serene waters, enjoy nature and exercise simultaneously. However, when venturing into this activity, one essential consideration is how to stay comfortable and protected in varying water temperatures. Here, the choice between a wetsuit and a drysuit becomes crucial. Both serve the purpose of insulation and protection, yet each have distinct features tailored to specific conditions and preferences.
The Wetsuit: Embracing Flexibility and Thermal Insulation

Wetsuits are a staple in the water sports community. Made from neoprene, a durable and insulating material, they function by trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and the body. This layer gets warmed by body heat, keeping the paddler insulated in cold waters. The snug fit of a wetsuit offers flexibility and unrestricted movement, ideal for paddleboarders requiring agility and freedom while maneuvering on the board.
Advantages of Wetsuits for Paddleboarding:
- Flexibility: Wetsuits allow ease of movement, enabling paddlers to comfortably navigate waters.
- Thermal Insulation: Effective in moderately cold waters, providing warmth through the trapped layer of water and neoprene material.
- Versatility: Suitable for various water sports, offering protection from UV rays and minor abrasions.
The Drysuit: Sealing Against Water and Cold

In contrast, Drysuits are designed to keep the paddler entirely dry, hence the name. These suits feature waterproof materials like Gore-Tex or similar fabrics, sealing the body away from water. Unlike wetsuits, they do not allow water to penetrate, making them the choice for extremely cold waters or situations where prolonged submersion is expected. Don’t get caught out however! Some drysuits have latex seals around the neck and hands, whereas others only have neoprene! Make sure you know what your suit has before buying!
Advantages of Drysuits for Paddle Boarding:
- Complete Dryness: Ideal for colder conditions or prolonged exposure to water, keeping the paddler dry and warm. Especially during the winter months!
- Adaptability: Can be layered with clothing for added warmth, making them suitable for various weather conditions. There are specific onesies you can buy to pop on under your drysuit.
- Versatility: Not limited to paddleboarding, can be used in other water activities where staying dry is crucial.
Choosing the Right Suit for Your Paddleboarding Adventure
When considering which suit suits your needs, several factors come into play:
- Water Temperature: For moderately cold waters, a wetsuit might suffice, while colder temperatures necessitate a drysuit for full protection, I always change out of my wetsuit at the end of October, beginning of November.
- Personal Comfort: Some paddlers prefer the snug fit and flexibility of a wetsuit, while others prioritize staying completely dry with a drysuit.
- Budget and Versatility: Wetsuits are often more affordable and versatile for various activities, while drysuits might be a better investment for extreme conditions.
