The Black Project Surge Surf Paddle is Black Project’s dedicated SUP surfing paddle. It is built for paddlers who want a lighter, more responsive and more confidence-inspiring paddle in the surf than an all-round or touring shape can offer.
When you are trying to catch waves, brace late, redirect quickly and keep the paddle out of the way when the board is moving around under you, the details matter. That is exactly where the Surge earns its place. It feels quicker, cleaner and more surf-literate than a do-it-all paddle, which is why serious SUP surfers tend to appreciate it straight away.
Where it sits in the Black Project range
The Surge is the surf-specific model in the range. It is more specialised for waves than the Lava, and less foil-specific than the FoilX.

Who is the Surge Surf Paddle best for?
It is best for paddlers who regularly SUP surf and want a blade and shaft setup that feels quicker and more controlled in waves than a touring or all-round paddle.
Can I use it for general paddling as well?
You can, but its strengths are in the surf. If most of your paddling is general cruising or touring with just the odd wave, the Lava is usually the better all-round choice.
How does it compare with the FoilX?
The Surge is for SUP surfing. The FoilX is for SUP foiling and is tuned around take-off cadence and foil acceleration rather than wave-riding paddle behaviour.
