The Starboard Roamer is a purpose-built expedition SUP for paddlers who want to cover serious distance while carrying considerably more kit than a conventional touring or race board comfortably allows. At 14'0" long and 28.5" wide, it takes much of its efficiency from Starboard's All Star race-board heritage, then adds the stability, volume, cargo capacity and deck organisation needed for real-world touring.

This is a particularly interesting board for coastal explorers, multi-day SUP trips, long river journeys and paddlers who regularly carry camping equipment, food, water or photography gear. It is fast enough to make covering distance enjoyable, but importantly it has not achieved that speed simply by becoming narrow and demanding.

If your priority is an easy-to-store recreational board, the Roamer is probably more board than you need. If, however, you already enjoy touring and want a composite SUP that lets you go further and carry more without moving to an unstable race platform, it makes a great deal of sense.

Why choose the Starboard Roamer?

Expedition boards have traditionally involved a fairly large compromise: choose something wide and heavily loaded for stability, or choose something fast enough to make a long journey enjoyable. The Roamer sits much closer to the middle.

Built to carry kit properly

The Roamer is much more than a race board with extra bungees attached. Starboard has designed the deck around carrying equipment, with front and rear storage zones, 12 lash points and a large flat recessed cargo area positioned ahead of the paddler.

Keeping heavier bags lower and closer to the centre of the board makes a noticeable difference. The board rolls less as your load moves, it is easier to manage in chop and you are not fighting badly positioned luggage through every paddle stroke.

Twin scupper drains and a central drainage channel help clear water from the recessed deck. That matters on coastal trips where spray and water coming over the deck would otherwise gradually add unwanted weight.

Designed for changing water conditions

The Roamer is particularly well considered for paddlers moving between sheltered and more exposed water. High side rails provide strong secondary stability, while additional volume through the nose helps the board lift over chop instead of continually burying the front.

A nose deflector helps push spray away from the paddler and cargo area, while the rounded tail is designed to release smoothly on flatter water and remain predictable when paddling with following swell.

The result is a board that should feel considerably more composed when a calm morning paddle develops into a windier return journey.

Glide without turning the Roamer into a race board

At 14 feet long, the Roamer has the waterline needed for efficient distance paddling. Its low nose rocker keeps more of that length working in flatter conditions, while the flat tail and carefully shaped side planes promote cleaner water release.

There is genuine race-board thinking underneath the expedition features, but we would not describe the Roamer as simply a wider All Star. The priority is sustainable pace, stability and carrying capacity rather than maximum competition speed.

XTEC Carbon D2 construction

The Roamer is produced in Starboard's XTEC Carbon D2 construction, developed to combine the weight advantages of a performance composite board with additional reinforcement for expedition use.

Key areas including the standing zone, rails, nose and tail receive strategic reinforcement, while Starboard's Carbon Load Frame adds structural strength around a board specifically intended to be paddled while carrying substantial loads.

This keeps the Roamer relatively light and responsive for its size without treating it as a delicate pure race board. It is still a premium composite SUP and should be handled accordingly, particularly when loading onto roof racks, landing on stony beaches or travelling with the board.

Who does the Starboard Roamer suit?

We would look seriously at the Roamer if you are already comfortable on a SUP and want to move into longer-distance paddling, particularly where carrying equipment forms part of the plan.

It is especially suited to:

• long-distance touring;
• multi-day SUP expeditions;
• coastal exploring;
• river and estuary journeys;
• paddlers carrying camping or photography equipment;
• experienced touring paddlers wanting more glide without moving to a narrow race board.

The 28.5" width should be reassuring for competent paddlers, especially with the recessed standing position, but this is still a long performance-orientated composite board. Someone buying their very first SUP purely for short recreational paddles would generally be better served by a wider all-round or conventional touring paddleboard.

Roamer, Touring or All Star?

Choose the Roamer if you want to cover distance while carrying substantial kit and want a board designed around expedition paddling.

Choose a conventional Starboard Touring if your paddling is mainly day touring and you want an efficient board without needing the Roamer's full cargo capacity and specialist expedition deck.

Choose an All Star or dedicated race board if outright speed, competition and training performance matter more than carrying luggage.

Choosing a paddle for the Roamer

A premium expedition board deserves an efficient paddle. Over longer distances, paddle weight, blade size and shaft feel become considerably more important than they do during a short recreational session.
