Description

The Starboard Spice 2026 is the “just right” surf SUP in Starboard’s lineup — fast and carving-focused, but with a more forgiving outline than the Pro shapes. If you want proper performance in UK beach breaks and punchy reef days without feeling like you’re constantly battling a twitchy board, the Spice is the sweet spot.

Where the Spice sits in the range

Think of the Spice as the quiver-killer surf SUP. It’s designed to feel lively underfoot, carry speed through turns, and still give you enough stability to paddle in, shuffle your feet and commit to a rail.

  • Choose the Spice if you want one board that covers the most conditions: small, weak waves through to proper surf, with a balance of speed and control.
  • Choose the Pro if you’re an experienced SUP surfer chasing maximum precision and the most “shortboard” feel.
  • Choose the Whopper if you want easier wave catching, maximum stability, or you’re stepping down from a bigger platform.
  • Choose the TwinFin if you love that skatey, fast, flowing feel and want a different flavour for smaller or softer days.

Why choose the Spice

  • Fast through flat spots — keeps momentum when waves aren’t perfect.
  • Accessible performance — less technical than a pure Pro shape, but still surfs properly.
  • Quick rail-to-rail transitions — makes carving and pumping feel natural.
  • 5-fin versatility — tune it for drive, hold, looseness and conditions.
  • Progression-friendly — ideal if you’re levelling up your surf SUPing and want a board that won’t hold you back.

Size guide (quick help)

  • 8'2" x 30.75" (121L) — the most reactive option for lighter riders or confident surfers who want tighter turns and a shorter-board feel.
  • 8'8" x 32" (140L) — the crowd favourite: plenty of stability for real-world conditions, with a lively surf feel once you’re on the wave.
  • 9'3" x 32.75" (153L) — more glide and easier wave entry for heavier riders or anyone wanting extra comfort without jumping to a full “longboard” style shape.

If you’re between sizes (or stepping down from a Whopper-style board), give us a shout — we’ll help you land on the right volume for your weight, ability and local waves.

FAQs

Is the Spice a good step-down board?

Yes — that’s one of its main strengths. The outline is more forgiving than a Pro, so you can drop length/volume without the board suddenly feeling “too technical”. If you’re coming from something like a Whopper-style shape, the 9'3" (153L) is often the smoothest step. If you’re already comfortable surfing, the 8'8" (140L) is the most popular all-round choice.

Limited Series vs Acute Carbon — which should I pick?

If you want excellent performance and durability, Limited Series is the safe bet. If you’re chasing the lightest feel and the quickest response (and you’re confident enough to notice the difference), Acute Carbon feels snappier, accelerates faster, and reacts more instantly underfoot.

Does it come with fins?

Yes. The Spice is supplied with a 4+1 setup on the sizes listed on this page (4.7 front and 4.5 rear). Limited Series boards come with Arma Core fins, while Acute Carbon boards come with prepreg carbon surf fins.

Can I change the fin setup?

Absolutely — that’s the point of the 5-fin layout. Run it 4+1 when you want grip and drive, or switch to a 2+1 feel when you want it looser and more playful. If you tell us your local waves and style, we’ll suggest a setup that suits.

Is the Spice only for waves?

It’s designed for surfing first, but it’s still stable enough to paddle out, cruise between peaks, and get you into waves early. If your priority is flatwater glide or distance paddling, you’ll be better served by a touring or crossover board — but as a surf-focused shape, the Spice is impressively practical day-to-day.

Can you help me choose the right size?

Yes — message or call us and we’ll size it properly based on your weight, ability, and the sort of waves you’re actually riding. If you can, tell us what board you’re coming from and what you like (or don’t like) about it.

Key Spice Features

Specifications

  • Features

    Bevelled rail
Less board “stuck” to the water means more speed and easier acceleration. It also helps the board tip onto rail more smoothly, so turns feel quicker and lighter.

    Nose outline + tapered rails
Extra stability up front helps with paddling and wave entry, while the thinner rail profile keeps swing weight down so the board feels more responsive in turns.

    Parallel, thicker midsection
This is the bit that makes the Spice such a good all-round surf shape: it carries speed down the line, holds momentum through weaker sections, and still gives you the float you want while you move around the deck.

    Slight domed deck
Keeps the centre float where you need it, while allowing the rails to stay thinner — that’s where the “bite” and response come from when you commit to a carve.

    Wing tail + round pin
The wing adds stability and speed through the wider section, then the tail narrows behind it for better control and tighter turning. The round pin holds confidently when it gets steeper or bigger.

    5-fin option (4+1 or 2+1)
Run it 4+1 for grip and drive (great for more power or steeper faces), or 2+1 when you want a looser, more playful feel. It’s an easy way to tune the board to your style.

    Construction options

    Limited Series
A lightweight, performance-focused build with a distinctive brushed carbon finish. Supplied with Arma Core fins (tough, reliable, and ideal for everyday surf use).

    Acute Carbon
The premium option: ultra-light with a more “electric” feel underfoot — quicker acceleration, faster rail engagement, and a slightly sharper response for committed surfing. Supplied with Prepreg carbon surf fins.
