Choosing the right paddle makes every session better

A paddle is not just an accessory. Weight, stiffness, blade size, shaft flex and adjustability all affect how your board tracks, how quickly you tire and how confident you feel on the water. If you are unsure where to start, read our SUP Paddle Buying Guide or ask our team for practical advice before you buy.

SUP Paddle Buying Guide

How to choose the right SUP paddle

The best SUP paddle depends on your height, strength, board type and the kind of paddling you do most often. A beginner usually needs something durable, adjustable and easy to transport. A touring paddler will benefit from a lighter paddle with a smooth, efficient catch. A race, surf or foil paddler may want something stiffer, lighter and more specific to their cadence and technique.

  • Construction: alloy paddles are tough and good value; carbon paddles are lighter and more efficient.
  • Configuration: 3-piece paddles are best for travel and inflatable boards; 2-piece paddles feel cleaner; fixed length paddles suit experienced paddlers.
  • Blade size: larger blades offer more power but can be harder on the body; smaller blades suit higher cadence and lighter paddlers.
  • Shaft stiffness: stiffer shafts feel more direct, while some flex can be more comfortable over longer sessions.
  • Paddle length: this varies depending on your height, board thickness and discipline.

3-piece, 2-piece or fixed length paddle?

3-piece SUP paddles are the most practical choice for most inflatable paddleboard owners. They break down into sections, fit into most board bags and are easy to store, travel with and share between paddlers.

2-piece SUP paddles are a good option for regular paddlers who want a stiffer, cleaner feel while still keeping some adjustment.

Fixed length SUP paddles are usually best for experienced paddlers who know their exact preferred paddle length and want the lightest, most direct feel possible.

Is a carbon SUP paddle worth it?

A carbon SUP paddle is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make. Because you lift and move your paddle thousands of times during a session, a lighter paddle can reduce fatigue and make paddling feel smoother and more efficient.

That does not mean every paddler needs the lightest paddle available. If you are just starting out, sharing with family or paddling occasionally, a tougher alloy or hybrid paddle may make more sense. If you paddle regularly, tour longer distances, race, surf or foil, carbon becomes much easier to justify.

Which paddle is best for your paddling style?

Beginners and families: choose a durable adjustable paddle that is easy to use and transport.

All-round paddling: look for a good balance of weight, strength and adjustability.

Touring and fitness: consider a lighter paddle with a comfortable shaft and efficient blade shape.

Racing: weight, stiffness, blade size and cadence become much more important.

Surf SUP and foil SUP: many paddlers prefer a shorter, more responsive setup with a blade that suits quicker strokes.

SUP Paddle FAQs

What is the best SUP paddle for beginners?

Most beginners are best suited to a durable adjustable 3-piece SUP paddle. It is easy to pack, simple to use and works well with inflatable paddleboards. As you paddle more often, upgrading to a lighter hybrid or carbon paddle can make a big difference.

How long should my paddleboard paddle be?

Paddle length depends on your height, board thickness and paddling style. As a rough starting point, many all-round paddlers use a paddle around 6–8 inches above head height, but touring, surf, race and foil paddling can all vary. If you are unsure, choose an adjustable paddle or ask us for advice.

Are 3-piece SUP paddles any good?

Yes. A good 3-piece SUP paddle is ideal for inflatable paddleboards, travel and easy storage. A 2-piece or fixed length paddle may feel slightly more direct, but for many paddlers the convenience of a 3-piece paddle is the best choice.

Should I buy a carbon paddle?

If you paddle regularly, a carbon paddle is usually worth considering. It will feel lighter in the hands, reduce fatigue and make longer sessions more enjoyable. Occasional paddlers may be better starting with a tougher alloy or hybrid paddle.

Can one paddle work for different types of paddleboarding?

Yes, an adjustable paddle can work well across all-round paddling, touring and general recreational use. If you become more specialised in racing, surf SUP or SUP foiling, a more specific paddle may give you a better feel.

Can I get help choosing a paddle?

Yes. Contact our team with your height, board, paddling experience and the type of paddling you want to do. We will help you choose a paddle that makes sense for your setup rather than simply pointing you at the most expensive option.

Need help choosing the right SUP paddle?

Tell us your height, board, paddling style and where you normally paddle. We will help you narrow the choice to a sensible setup, whether that is a durable first paddle, a lighter touring upgrade or a more specialised carbon paddle for performance paddling.
