Description
Description
The Tahe 6'6 Paint Maxi Shortboard is a really smart option for lighter riders who want a surfboard that feels more compact and more responsive than a Mini Mal or Malibu, but without stepping straight into a tiny, twitchy performance shape. It gives you that shorter-board feel with a much more forgiving setup, making it a strong choice for younger surfers, lighter adults, or anyone progressing out of a bigger learner board and wanting something more lively underfoot.
This is a soft-top board, but it is not just a basic foamie. Tahe have built the Paint range around a shaped EPS core, fibreglass reinforcement and dual stringers, then wrapped it in a soft deck, rail and bottom finish. The result is a board that feels durable, comfortable and confidence-inspiring, while still giving you the glide and support you need to catch waves early and start turning with more intent.
Where It Sits in the Tahe Range
Within the Tahe surfboard line-up, the 6'6 Paint Maxi Shortboard sits in a really useful middle ground. It is more agile and more shortboard-like than the bigger, easier paddling shapes such as the Tahe 7'9 Malibu, Tahe 7'3 Mini Mal or Tahe 7'0 Egg, but it is still more accessible than going right down to the Tahe 5'6 Paint Mini Shortboard.
If you are a lighter rider and want a board that helps you progress into proper shortboard-style surfing without making life unnecessarily hard, this is the kind of board that keeps sessions fun rather than frustrating.
Why Choose the Tahe 6'6 Paint Maxi Shortboard?
- Friendly for progression – easier to paddle and easier to catch waves than a more advanced shortboard.
- Compact, lively feel – shorter length makes it feel more manoeuvrable and less cumbersome than a bigger learner board.
- Good choice for lighter riders – the size and volume suit smaller surfers better than oversized beginner boards.
- Soft construction where it matters – comfortable, confidence-building and more forgiving in the knocks and bumps that come with learning.
- More capable than a cheap foamie – shaped EPS core, fibreglass reinforcement and dual stringers help the board feel more solid on the wave.
- Fast route to better surfing – ideal when you are ready to move beyond simply standing up and want to start trimming, turning and linking sections more smoothly.

Explore the Range
If you are comparing where this board sits, these are the most useful step-up or step-down options in the Tahe family:
- Tahe 5'6 Paint Mini Shortboard – smaller and better suited to very lightweight riders.
- Tahe 7'0 Egg – a friendlier step for riders wanting more wave count and easier paddling.
- Tahe 7'3 Mini Mal – a great progression board if you want even more stability and glide.
- Tahe 7'9 Malibu – the easiest option here for maximum stability and easiest learning.

Who is the Tahe 6'6 Paint Maxi Shortboard best for?
This board is best for lighter riders who want an easy, forgiving route into shortboard-style surfing. It suits younger surfers, smaller adults, or anyone stepping down from a bigger learner board and wanting something more agile without making paddling and take-offs too difficult.
Is this a good first surfboard?
For the right rider weight, yes. If you are lighter and want to learn on a board that still feels compact and fun, it is a very good option. If you are heavier or want the easiest possible learning curve, a bigger board such as the Tahe Egg, Mini Mal or Malibu will usually get you into more waves more quickly.
How does it compare with the Tahe 5'6 Paint Mini Shortboard?
The 6'6 Maxi is the more forgiving choice. It has more length, more volume and a bit more support, so it will suit a wider range of lighter riders. The 5'6 Mini is better kept for very lightweight surfers or those who specifically want the smallest option in the Paint range.
What if I weigh more than 60kg?
You may still be able to ride it depending on your ability, fitness and the conditions, but as a general buying recommendation we would point heavier riders towards something with a bit more length and volume. That usually means an Egg, Mini Mal or Malibu for easier paddling, easier take-offs and more overall enjoyment.
Is this the same board as the older BIC model?
Yes. The Tahe 6'6 Paint Maxi Shortboard was formerly known as the BIC 6'0 Maxi Shortboard Paint, so if you are comparing older listings or reviews, that is the legacy name to look for.
