ION Wetsuits Explained: Seek vs Amaze + Core vs Amp vs Select (Properly, with the Tech)

Tony Jones |

ION make some of the best hard-wearing wetsuits we stock at The SUP Company — especially for wind sports and anyone who spends long sessions on cold, breezy UK water. The problem? The names can be confusing: Seek, Amaze, Core, Amp, Select

This guide breaks it down in plain English and explains the technical differences that actually matter: linings, stretch zones, wind-chill protection, seam sealing, and why certain suits feel warmer (or freer) than others.

Wetsuit vs Drysuit: what’s best for paddling?

Step 1: The ION naming system (the key)

Most ION wetsuits follow a simple two-part naming structure:

  • Family = the cut / who it’s for: Seek (men), Amaze (women), Capture (junior).
  • Level = the specification tier: Element, Core, Amp, Select (value → premium).

So Seek Core vs Seek Amp is the same “Seek” concept, but a different warmth/stretch/sealing package.

Step 2: Choose your “family” (Seek vs Amaze vs Capture)

ION Seek (Men)

The main men’s range and the one most customers land on for surfing, SUP, wing and kite in UK conditions.

Popular Seek picks:
ION Seek Core 5/4 Front Zip
ION Seek Amp 5/4 Front Zip
ION Seek Select 5/4 Front Zip (Men)
ION Seek Select 5.5/4.5 Hood Front Zip (Men)

ION Amaze (Women)

The women’s equivalent — shaped/panelled for comfort and performance, with the same logic around Core/Amp etc.

Popular Amaze picks:
ION Amaze Core 4/3 Front Zip
ION Amaze Core 4/3 Back Zip

ION Capture (Junior)

ION’s junior suits — designed to be warm, flexible and durable (because kids are brutal on kit).

Popular Capture pick:
ION Capture 4/3 Wetsuit Front Zip

The technical differences that matter (Element vs Core vs Amp vs Select)

Here’s what changes as you move up the ION range:

  • Thermal lining: how much heat the lining holds and how quickly it dries between sessions.
  • Stretch package: where the suit uses higher-stretch outer lining for shoulder/arm freedom (massive for wing/kite and paddling).
  • Wind-chill protection: materials and printed protection panels designed to reduce heat loss on exposed chest/back zones.
  • Seam durability & sealing: better reinforcement and internal sealing reduces leaks and extends lifespan.

ION Wetsuit Tech: FAQ & Glossary

What does “Core” mean in the ION range?

Core is the all-rounder: dependable warmth, comfort and durability for regular UK use. If you’re unsure where to start, Core in the right thickness is usually the best first buy.

What does “Amp” mean in the ION range?

Amp is the mobility-first tier. You’ll typically see more Max_Flex in key zones, giving a noticeably freer feel through the shoulders and arms — ideal for wing/kite and higher-effort paddling.

What does “Select” mean in the ION range?

Select is the premium winter weapon: advanced thermal package (including Graphene lining) plus premium wind-chill protection features, designed for stormy cold-water sessions.

What is Max_Flex?

Max_Flex is ION’s high-stretch outer lining concept. In real terms: it makes the suit feel less restrictive in the shoulders/arms — so reaching overhead (winging) and repeated strokes (paddling) feel easier.

What is Hot_Stuff (2.0 / 3.0)?

Hot_Stuff is ION’s thermal lining designed to trap heat while staying flexible. Newer generations (like Hot_Stuff 3.0) are often used in higher-mobility zones to keep warmth without sacrificing movement.

What is Plasma_Plush?

Plasma_Plush is a warmer, quick-drying lining often used on the back panel where wind chill hits hardest. It helps boost warmth and speeds up drying between sessions.

What is Silk_Stuff?

Silk_Stuff is a comfort lining focused on feel against the skin and flexibility. It’s a big reason entry/value suits can still feel genuinely comfortable and mobile.

What is Graphene lining and why is it on Select suits?

Graphene is used as part of ION’s premium warmth package. The practical benefit is higher heat retention — particularly valuable in UK winter conditions with wind chill.

What is Exo_Shield?

Exo_Shield is a protective concept used on chest/back zones to reduce wind chill impact — helpful when you’re wet, standing in wind, or riding fast (wing/kite).

Front Zip vs Back Zip: which is best?

Front Zip generally reduces flushing and feels warmer — our default recommendation for UK use. Back Zip is easier to get in/out of and can suit a wider range of body shapes and flexibility levels.

Example Back Zip: ION Element 5/4

Which thickness should I choose in the UK?
  • 3/2: summer and warm-water trips.
  • 4/3: the UK workhorse for spring through autumn.
  • 5/4: winter and cold-water sessions, especially when it’s windy.
  • Hooded winter suits: for committed year-round riders or anyone who gets cold easily.

I’m still not sure — can you recommend one?

Yes. Send us your height, weight, your sport (SUP / surf / wing / kite), and the months you’ll be using it. We’ll recommend the right ION suit and sizing first time.
