Description

The AXIS 19mm Foil Base Plate is the completely redesigned board-side connection for the latest black AXIS 19mm Aluminium Foil Mast system. CNC machined from a single billet of aircraft-grade aluminium, the new plate is stiffer, stronger and more refined than the previous AXIS design, while removing material where it is no longer needed.

It is a small component with a significant job. The base plate transfers everything happening at the foil through the mast and into the board, so stiffness and precision at this connection directly affect how solid and predictable the complete foil feels beneath your feet.

For 2026, AXIS has re-engineered that connection rather than simply changing the colour. A tapered mast pocket, cross-stabilising split bolt, narrower plate profile and dedicated foil-assist mounting options make this a meaningful update to the AXIS aluminium mast platform.

Important compatibility note: this new black 19mm base plate is designed for the latest-generation black AXIS 19mm aluminium masts. It is not compatible with the previous-generation red AXIS 19mm aluminium masts.

Why AXIS Redesigned the 19mm Base Plate

The previous AXIS aluminium mast system was already known for being impressively stiff, but there is more to foil stiffness than the mast section alone. The joints at either end of the mast matter enormously, particularly once you introduce larger front wings, higher speeds, powerful carving or foil-assist systems.

The latest AXIS base plate has therefore been redesigned around a more heavily supported mast-to-plate connection. The aim is simple: minimise unwanted movement between board and mast so rider input is transferred more directly into the foil.

On the water that translates into a foil that should feel more connected and predictable, particularly when loading the mast through turns, pumping or powered riding.

Machined From a Single Aluminium Billet

The new base plate is CNC machined from a single solid billet of aircraft-grade aluminium. This gives AXIS precise control over the shape of the plate, mast pocket and reinforcement while retaining the durability that makes an aluminium mast system so practical.

Material has been concentrated where it contributes to stiffness and structural support, while unnecessary material has been removed to keep weight down.

The complete plate is finished in a black anodised coating designed to withstand regular use in both salt and fresh water and to match the new generation of black AXIS aluminium mast components.

New Tapered Mast Pocket

One of the biggest changes is hidden inside the connection itself. The bevelled mast pocket now uses a tapered profile, increasing lateral support around the mast while reducing material where it does not contribute meaningfully to the structure.

This works together with the redesigned black 19mm aluminium mast to create a firmer and more precise fit between the mast and base plate.

For the rider, that matters because movement at the top of the mast is magnified further down at the foil. Increasing stiffness at this junction helps the complete setup feel more direct rather than allowing energy to disappear through flex in the connection.

Cross-Stabilising Split Bolt

AXIS has also introduced a split, cross-stabilising bolt that is faired neatly into the bevel of the base plate.

This provides additional support across the mast-to-base connection, helping keep the mast securely located within the plate and improving long-term durability of the joint.

It is particularly relevant for riders generating higher loads through the setup, whether from larger foil wings, harder carving, heavier rider weights or electric foil-assist use.

Narrower Profile for Modern Foil Boards

The overall width of the plate has been reduced. Besides removing unnecessary material, this makes the new base plate better suited to modern boards where the foil tracks may sit within a recessed or trench-style mounting area.

This is particularly useful with boards such as the AXIS Pocket Trench, where a conventional wide base plate can become unnecessarily bulky inside the recessed mounting area.

For more conventional foil boards, the plate retains the standard track-mounted approach, allowing the foil to be positioned fore and aft to achieve the correct balance for your board, foil and riding style.

Designed With Foil Assist in Mind

A particularly useful update is the addition of extra mounting holes for Foil Drive and other compatible foil-assist systems.

Foil assist places additional demands on the board-to-mast connection and often requires additional mounting hardware around the base plate. Building those options directly into the AXIS plate creates a cleaner foundation for riders combining an AXIS aluminium mast with an electric assist system.

If foil assist is part of your setup, you can explore our complete Foil Drive range for systems, batteries, motors and compatible accessories.

Smoother and Safer to Handle

AXIS has also reshaped the rear section of the mast bevel. The previous sharper profile has been replaced by a smoother, less aggressive edge.

It is a relatively small detail, but a welcome one when carrying, assembling and packing away a foil. Foil equipment inevitably gets handled around bare feet, wetsuits, board bags and vehicle interiors, so removing unnecessarily sharp edges makes everyday ownership easier.

Who Is the AXIS 19mm Foil Base Plate For?

  • Riders building a new AXIS black aluminium mast setup who need the correct board-to-mast connection.
  • Wing, SUP, surf, pump and downwind foilers who value a stiff and dependable aluminium mast platform.
  • Foil Drive and foil-assist riders who can make use of the additional mounting options built into the plate.
  • AXIS Pocket Trench and recessed-track board owners who benefit from the narrower plate profile.
  • Riders choosing aluminium over carbon for its combination of stiffness, durability, modularity and value.

Who Should Not Buy This Base Plate?

If you own an older red AXIS 19mm aluminium mast, do not order this plate as a replacement for your existing base plate. The redesigned mast pocket and connection mean the new black base plate is not backwards compatible with the previous red 19mm mast.

It is also not required for AXIS carbon masts, which use their own board-mount connection, and it is not the correct solution if your board uses a Tuttle or Deep Tuttle mast connection rather than twin foil tracks.

AXIS 19mm Base Plate Compatibility Explained

The most important buying point with this product is that black and red AXIS 19mm mast components should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

The latest base plate works as part of the redesigned black aluminium mast system, where the mast and plate have been engineered together around the tapered connection and cross-stabilising hardware. If you have an older red 19mm mast, retain the correct previous-generation base plate for that system.

If you are unsure which generation of AXIS mast you own, contact us before ordering and we can help confirm the correct parts.

FAQs

Will this base plate fit the new black AXIS 19mm aluminium mast?

Yes. This base plate has been specifically redesigned around the latest black AXIS 19mm aluminium mast system and is the correct plate-mount connection for those masts.

Will it fit my older red AXIS 19mm mast?

No. This is particularly important: the latest black 19mm base plate is not compatible with the previous-generation red AXIS 19mm aluminium mast. If you have the older red mast, you need the matching previous-generation base plate.

What is different compared with the previous AXIS base plate?

The new plate is machined from a single aluminium billet and uses a redesigned tapered mast pocket with a cross-stabilising split bolt. It is also narrower, has a smoother rear profile and includes additional mounting points for compatible foil-assist systems.

Does the new base plate make the foil stiffer?

Its redesigned mast pocket and additional cross-support are intended to increase stiffness at the mast-to-base plate connection. That matters because reducing movement at this joint helps the complete foil feel more direct and predictable under load.

Can I use it with Foil Drive?

The new plate includes additional mounting holes specifically intended to provide direct attachment options for Foil Drive and other compatible foil-assist systems. The exact hardware required will depend on the assist system and board you are using, so check the complete setup before ordering.

Will it fit a recessed or trench-style foil board?

That is one of the reasons AXIS reduced the overall width of the new plate. Its narrower profile makes it better suited to boards with recessed mast-track areas, particularly the AXIS Pocket Trench design.

Can I use this with an AXIS carbon mast?

No. This base plate is part of the AXIS 19mm aluminium mast system. AXIS carbon masts use different mounting architecture and do not require this separate aluminium mast base plate.

Does it fit standard foil-board tracks?

Yes. It is designed for the conventional twin-track foil-board mounting system, allowing fore-and-aft mast-position adjustment to balance the foil correctly beneath the board.

Are mounting screws included?

Yes. AXIS supplies the latest 19mm Foil Base Plate with its mounting screws. Board track hardware and other foil components may still be required separately depending on your setup.

Do I need the new Doodad as well?

If you are building a complete latest-generation black AXIS 19mm aluminium mast setup, you will also need the appropriate current mast-to-fuselage Doodad. Choose the standard Doodad for a compatible conventional AXIS fuselage or the dedicated FATTY Doodad if you are building around an AXIS FATTY fuselage.

Not sure whether your AXIS parts are compatible?

AXIS is highly modular, but the latest black aluminium system introduces some important generation-specific connections. Tell us which mast, fuselage, board and foil-assist system you have and The SUP Company can help check the complete setup before you order.
