Wing and foil buying guide

Wing foiling and modern hydrofoiling are exciting, but the equipment needs to work as a system. A wing, board and foil that are well matched will make progression easier. A setup that is too small, too technical or poorly matched can make the sport feel far harder than it needs to be.

New to wing foiling

Prioritise stability, early lift, suitable board volume and a wing size that suits your local wind range.

Progressing riders

Look at smaller boards, more efficient foils, refined wings and component upgrades that match your next goal.

Specialist riding

Downwind, surf, pump, parawing, Foil Drive and eFoil setups all need more careful matching before you buy.

What this Wing & Foil collection covers

This is the main Wing & Foil hub at The SUP Company. It is designed to help you move from broad browsing into the right buying path, whether you need a complete setup, a single upgrade or advice before committing.

How to choose the right wing foil setup

Start with your real ability level and the conditions you actually ride in. A setup for flat-water learning in moderate wind is very different from a setup for waves, downwind runs, light-wind cruising or powered assist riding.

The key parts to match are:

  • Wing size: matched to your weight, wind range and board/foil efficiency.
  • Board volume and shape: enough stability to start, recover and progress without fighting the board.
  • Foil size and style: enough early lift and control for your level, with a sensible upgrade path.
  • Protection and accessories: helmet, impact vest, leash, bags and spares to keep sessions safer and smoother.

If you are unsure, send us your height, weight, local spot, current experience and the type of riding you want to do. We can help you avoid buying a setup that looks good on paper but does not suit your real-world sessions.

New to wing foiling? Start here

For most new wing foilers, the best setup is the one that gets you riding consistently, not the smallest or most technical kit. You need enough board volume to stand, reset and get moving, a foil that lifts early, and a wing that suits your weight and local wind range.

A common buying mistake is choosing equipment based on where you want to be in two years rather than what will help you progress now. Going too small too soon can make learning frustrating, especially in gusty UK conditions.

Useful starting points include our wingsurfers collection, wing foil boards, complete foil packages and Wing Surfing & Foil Buying Guide.

Progression, freeride, waves and downwind

Progression and freeride

Once you are flying both ways, starting to gybe and riding longer runs, small setup changes can make a big difference. A more efficient foil, better rear stabiliser, refined wing or more responsive board can help unlock smoother transitions and more confident riding.

Wave and surf-style winging

Wave-focused riders usually want a setup that turns easily, depowers cleanly and keeps the foil controlled through changing water speed. Board size, front wing choice and stabiliser tuning all matter.

Downwind and light wind

Downwind and light-wind riding rewards glide, efficiency and early lift. Look at downwind foil boards, efficient front wings and the right wing size for your local wind range.

Pump and dock-start

Pump foiling is its own pathway, with efficient foils and specific board choices. Browse pump foil and dock-start equipment if that is your main focus.

Foil assist, Foil Drive and eFoils

Powered riding has opened up new options for foilers, but it is important to choose the right category. A foil assist system is designed to support take-offs and extend the range of a foil setup. An eFoil is a self-powered electric foil board. They overlap in feel, but they are not the same buying decision.

  • Foil assist systems are for riders who already understand foiling and want help getting onto foil more often.
  • Foil Drive suits riders looking at powered assist, surf access, downwind support and light-wind options.
  • Electric foil boards are self-contained powered foil boards for riders who want propulsion built into the board system.

If you are deciding between Foil Drive, foil assist and an eFoil, ask before ordering. The right choice depends on your ability, launch spot, riding goals, budget and how much of the session you want to be motor-assisted.

Foil Drive and Duotone Foil Assist are relevant if you are exploring powered assist. Browse Waydoo electric foil boards if you are looking at self-powered eFoil riding.

Forward WIP and ION are useful brands to consider for protection, impact vests, helmets, wetsuit and accessory choices around your wing and foil setup.

Protection, bags and setup essentials

Wing and foil equipment is high-performance kit, so protection matters for both rider and equipment. A helmet and impact vest are sensible for foiling, especially when learning, riding in groups, using powerful foil setups or pushing into waves, jumps and faster speeds.

It is also worth protecting the equipment itself. Foil board bags, wing bags, mast covers, foil hardware and screw sets help keep your kit organised, reduce avoidable damage and make it easier to get on the water without missing small but essential parts.

Useful collections include foiling protection, helmets, impact vests, foil board bags and foil screws and hardware.

Try, advise, ride: demo and expert support

Wing and foil buying is personal. Rider weight, experience, board size, foil choice, wing size and local conditions all affect how the setup feels. That is why we use a Try / Advise / Ride approach.

Try: where suitable, compare kit through our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington. This is built around genuine purchase prospects, expert matching and a proper handover.

Advise: speak to us before buying if you are unsure. We can help you narrow the options around your weight, ability, board, foil, local spot and goals.

Ride: choose the setup that helps you get more consistent sessions, better progression and more time on the water.

Wing & Foil FAQs

What do I need to start wing foiling?

Most riders need a wing, foil board, hydrofoil, leash, suitable wetsuit and sensible protection such as a helmet and impact vest. The exact sizes depend on your weight, ability, wind range and local conditions.

What is the difference between wing surfing and wing foiling?

Wing surfing uses a handheld wing to power a board across the water. Wing foiling uses that wing with a foil board and hydrofoil so the board lifts above the water. Wing surfing can be a useful first step, while wing foiling adds lift, glide and a much more efficient ride.

What size wing should I buy?

Wing size depends on your weight, wind range, board size, foil size and skill level. A heavier rider, smaller foil or lighter wind usually needs more wing power. A lighter rider, efficient foil or stronger wind usually needs less. If you are unsure, ask before ordering.

What size foil board do I need?

Newer riders usually need more volume and stability. Progressing riders can reduce volume as starts, balance and foil control improve. Board size should be matched to your weight, ability, wind strength and the type of riding you want to do.

Should I buy a complete foil or separate components?

Choose a complete foil package if you want a matched system and a simpler buying route. Choose separate components if you already own a compatible setup and know what you want to improve, such as more lift, glide, speed or manoeuvrability.

Is foil assist the same as an eFoil?

No. A foil assist system helps a foil rider get onto foil and extend sessions. An eFoil is a self-powered electric foil board. Foil assist usually suits riders with existing foil experience, while eFoils are a different category of powered foiling equipment.

Do I need a helmet and impact vest for wing foiling?

We strongly recommend sensible protection for foiling. A helmet and impact vest are especially important when learning, riding around other people, using powerful foil setups, riding in waves or pushing into faster, higher-risk sessions.

Can I try wing and foil equipment before buying?

Where suitable and available, selected wing and foil equipment can be explored through our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington. Demos are subject to approval, suitability and availability.

Can The SUP Company help me choose a full wing foil setup?

Yes. Send us your height, weight, experience level, local conditions, current equipment and what you want to achieve. We can help you choose a wing, board, foil and protection package that makes sense for your progression.

Need help choosing wing and foil kit?

Wing and foil equipment works best when the whole setup is matched properly. If you are unsure about board volume, wing size, foil choice, protection or powered assist options, ask us before ordering.
