Description

The Black Project FoilX Carbon Paddle is a dedicated SUP foil paddle for riders who want a setup built around foil take-off, faster repeat strokes and better cadence once the board starts to lift. It is designed for downwind foiling, SUP foil surfing and flat-water foiling, where a normal paddle can feel too long, too traditional or simply a step behind the way modern foiling works.

In retailer terms, this is not a touring paddle repurposed for foiling. It has been built around the needs of foilers from the start. The lower-aspect blade shape, foil-specific sizing philosophy and modular carbon construction all point in the same direction: helping you get onto foil efficiently and keep momentum alive where it matters.

Where it sits in the Black Project range

The FoilX is the foil-specific model in the Black Project line-up. It is more specialised for SUP foiling than the Surge Surf Paddle or the more versatile Lava.

  • Choose the FoilX if your priority is SUP foiling, downwind foiling or foil surf use
  • Choose the Surge if you mainly SUP surf and want a wave-specific paddle rather than a foil-specific one
  • Choose the Lava if you want a broader all-water paddle rather than a specialist foil tool

Why choose the FoilX Carbon Paddle?

  • Foil take-off efficiency – the blade shape is tuned to help you get up and going with fewer wasted strokes
  • Higher cadence support – especially useful when you need quick follow-up strokes between bumps or sections
  • Purpose-built foil feel – more relevant to modern foiling than adapting a touring or race paddle
  • Premium modular construction – componentised hot-glue assembly helps with serviceability, tuning and part replacement
  • Serious upgrade for committed foilers – ideal if you already know your paddle needs to work with the foil, not against it

FAQs

Who is the FoilX Carbon Paddle best for?

It is best for paddlers who are primarily SUP foiling, whether that is downwind, foil surf or flat-water foil use. It is a specialist paddle rather than a general SUP paddle.

Why not just use a normal race or touring paddle for foiling?

You can, but a foil-specific paddle like the FoilX usually feels better for the stop-start demands of foiling, the need for fast repeat strokes and the way take-off power has to arrive cleanly.

How does it compare with the Surge Surf Paddle?

The Surge is designed around SUP surfing. The FoilX is designed around SUP foiling and the very different cadence, acceleration and water connection that foiling demands.

Specifications

  • Features

    Low-aspect foil-specific blade shape
The FoilX uses a shorter, lower-aspect blade outline to suit the quick, punchy strokes that matter in foiling. In real terms, that means less draggy “stuck in the water” feeling and an easier path to the fast cadence needed for paddle-up starts and linking bumps.

    Moderate 9.5° blade angle
This helps the paddle enter the water cleanly and feel more forgiving through the catch. For foiling, that matters because you often want fast, efficient strokes rather than one big, heavy pull.

Shallow scoop and reduced blade volume
This is part of what gives the FoilX its lively, responsive feel. You still get solid purchase in the water, but the blade is tuned to let you keep stroke speed high when accelerating onto foil.

More usable power at the toe of the blade
When you are trying to stay flying between bumps or just need a quick boost to keep the foil alive, the FoilX is designed to give useful power even from shorter, shallower strokes.

    PowerGrip handle
A good paddle should feel connected in your hand, especially when you are working hard to get moving. Black Project’s hollow carbon PowerGrip handle is shaped to improve comfort and control while making effort feel more direct.

Premium carbon construction with replaceable parts
The FoilX uses a hollow pre-preg carbon build with a componentised hot-glue assembly. That means low weight, sharp response and the ability to swap or replace parts if your setup changes or the paddle gets damaged.

X-Flex foam core and higher modulus laminates
In simple terms, this is about creating a blade that feels light, strong and resistant to knocks while still giving the crisp feedback advanced paddlers want.
