The Duotone Skybrid SLS 2027 is one of the strongest all-round mid-length foil board choices in the Duotone range. Designed primarily for wing foiling, freeride and freefly, it combines the glide and earlier take-off advantages of a longer, narrower board with the stability, speed control and familiar handling that many riders still want from an everyday wing board.

This is an important distinction. The Skybrid SLS is not simply a shortened downwind board and it is not an ultra-specialist parawing shape. Duotone has deliberately retained a moderate rockerline, stable lower rail apex and wider standing platform, making it particularly well suited to riders who want better light-wind efficiency without giving up confident powered wing foiling.

For 2027 the shape is based around the latest Skybrid D/LAB platform and receives increased rounded rail bevels, a lower rail apex, wider stance area, diamond tail and refined bottom surface. These changes help the board accelerate and release more efficiently while improving recovery when the board touches down.

The SLS construction then adds a sophisticated Biax Carbon PVC Sandwich lay-up around a lightweight EPS core, giving the board the stiffness and direct foil connection experienced riders are looking for without moving to the significantly more expensive Hollow Shell Composite construction of the D/LAB.

Our view: if wing foiling remains your main discipline but you want one board capable of light-wind freeride, freefly, parawing and Foil Assist crossover, the Skybrid SLS is arguably the most rounded performance option in the Duotone mid-length range.

Where does the Skybrid SLS sit in the Duotone foil board range?

The Skybrid family sits between Duotone's compact conventional wing foil boards and its longer, more specialised downwind and parawing shapes. That positioning is the key to understanding why the Skybrid works so well for everyday wing foiling.

Its additional waterline helps the board build speed before take-off, but at 5'5" to 6'1" it remains much shorter and easier to manage than a dedicated downwind board. Once flying, there is less board ahead of you than with a full-length downwind shape, resulting in a more familiar wing-board feel through turns, transitions and powered riding.

Duotone positions the Skybrid SLS as a freeride/all-round performance board, and we think that description is accurate. It is particularly attractive for riders who want more usable sessions rather than simply chasing the smallest possible board.

• Wing freeride: excellent. This is where the Skybrid SLS makes the most sense.
• Light-wind winging: excellent, with increased waterline helping you accelerate before lift-off.
• Freefly: very good, particularly for riders using the wing to get onto foil before flagging it out.
• Parawing: very capable, although the Paradox SLS is the more specialist pump-and-glide option.
• Foil Assist: a genuine crossover application thanks to efficient acceleration and predictable touchdowns.
• Jumping: possible, including strapped riding, although dedicated freestyle riders should still look towards the Sky Style SLS.
• Dedicated downwind: possible in the right conditions, but Duotone's longer Downwinder shapes remain more specialised for that job.

What's new on the Duotone Skybrid SLS for 2027?

The 2027 update is more substantial than a colour or construction change. Duotone has refined the parts of the Skybrid that determine what happens before you are flying: acceleration, pumping, board release and touchdown recovery.

Increased rounded rail bevels

The rails are more heavily bevelled, reducing the amount of bottom surface that has to pass through the water. Less wetted surface means the board can accelerate and release more cleanly, particularly when you are actively pumping the board and foil through your legs.

The additional bevel also becomes important after take-off. If a rail touches during a gybe, carve or touchdown, there is less flat surface available to catch. The board is more inclined to glance across the water and recover rather than abruptly decelerating.

Lower rail apex

Longer, narrower foil boards can become demanding if their pursuit of efficiency removes too much initial stability. Duotone counters this with a lower rail apex, helping the Skybrid retain the planted, predictable feeling that has made the range popular with wing foilers.

This is one of the biggest reasons we would steer an everyday wing foiler towards the Skybrid rather than automatically recommending the most extreme low-rocker shape.

Wider stance area extending to the rails

The deck platform extends all the way towards the rails, creating more usable standing width than the narrower bottom outline might suggest.

That gives you room to establish a confident stance when accelerating, pumping or riding strapless. It is particularly useful when riding waves or bumps with an offset stance, where being able to move your rear foot across the board gives much better leverage over the foil.

Diamond tail

The diamond tail combines a relatively broad standing platform with a narrower effective release area. You therefore retain stability under your rear foot without dragging an unnecessarily wide tail through the water.

Once airborne, the cut-away shape also improves clearance when banking the board into turns.

Moderate rockerline

This is one of the most important Skybrid design choices. Rather than using the extremely low rocker of a specialist pump or parawing board, the Skybrid retains more rocker through the nose.

The benefit is better control as speed increases and more forgiveness when powered by a wing. The trade-off is that something like the Paradox SLS can be pumped onto foil even more aggressively. For a rider who spends most of the session holding a wing, however, the Skybrid's balance is generally the more useful one.

Inside the Skybrid SLS: Biax Carbon PVC Sandwich construction

The SLS version is more than simply a carbon skin over the standard Skybrid. Duotone uses a dedicated composite lay-up designed to deliver a strong combination of low weight, stiffness and durability.

The 2027 Skybrid SLS construction incorporates:

• Lightweight EPS core forming the low-density internal structure.
• Full Biax Carbon outer layers to increase stiffness and reduce unwanted flex.
• 90-degree fibre reinforcement layers forming part of the structural sandwich.
• A full bamboo reinforcement layer integrated into the lay-up.
• Carbon reinforcement connecting the foil track area towards the stance area, helping transfer foil loads into the structure of the board.
• Weight-saving graphics and finish to avoid adding unnecessary material where it provides no performance benefit.

Why does this matter on the water? The foil is effectively a long lever attached to the bottom of the board. Every input through your feet has to travel through the board and foil tracks before it reaches the mast. A stiffer structure reduces the delay between your movement and the foil's response.

You feel that most during pumping, faster carving and quick pitch corrections. It is one of the main reasons to choose the SLS over a heavier, more value-focused construction.

SLS or D/LAB?

The Skybrid D/LAB 2027 uses Duotone's Hollow Shell Composite construction and is dramatically lighter. Duotone states that the D/LAB saves more than 2kg against the SLS in most sizes, with D/LAB board weights ranging from approximately 3.4kg for the 60L to 4.1kg for the 100L.

That makes the D/LAB extraordinary if minimum swing weight, pumping response and acceleration are the priorities.

The Skybrid SLS remains the option we expect to make more sense for many riders. You still get a highly responsive carbon sandwich board, but without paying for Duotone's most extreme construction technology. If the board is going to be ridden regularly for powered winging rather than being chosen primarily for the lightest possible freefly or pump performance, the SLS is a very compelling balance.

Duotone Skybrid SLS 2027 size guide

The Skybrid SLS comes in five sizes from 60 litres to 100 litres. Importantly, Duotone increases both volume and width progressively through the range rather than simply scaling length.

Do not choose your Skybrid by volume alone

This is particularly important with mid-length boards. A 90L Skybrid at only 21.5" wide behaves very differently at displacement speed to a short 90L board that is several inches wider.

As a starting point, an established wing foiler may choose a volume somewhere around bodyweight in kilograms when looking for a neutral performance-oriented setup. Going further above bodyweight adds flotation and makes slogging home or dealing with marginal conditions easier. Going below bodyweight creates a more technical setup that normally assumes confident knee starts, water starts and foil control.

The correct choice also depends on:

• Rider weight and height.
• Whether you start from your knees or sink the board.
• Your current board and what you like or dislike about it.
• Front wing size and low-speed lift.
• Whether you ride mainly flat water, harbour chop, open sea or waves.
• How often you expect to ride in marginal wind.
• Whether the board will also be used with a parawing or Foil Assist.
• Whether you want to ride strapped.

Skybrid SLS vs Skybrid D/LAB vs Paradox SLS vs Midfish

Skybrid SLS or Paradox SLS?

This is likely to be the most important comparison for 2027.

The Paradox has lower rocker, a pointier nose, more heavily reduced bottom area and a step tail. It can be projected through the water more effectively using your legs, so it gets onto foil earlier and pumps more efficiently before lift-off.

The trade-off is stability and powered control. The Skybrid has a wider bottom, more rocker and more planted platform, making it easier at displacement speed and more controlled as wing-powered speed increases.

Duotone specifically positions the Skybrid as the better option for wing foilers across a wider range of levels and for riders going faster. The Skybrid also accommodates conventional front-and-rear strapped riding and occasional jumping, whereas the Paradox is much more orientated towards strapless freefly and uses a front-strap-focused setup.

Simple decision: predominantly winging? Start with the Skybrid SLS. Predominantly parawing, bumps and freeflight? Look harder at the Paradox SLS.

What foil should you pair with the Skybrid SLS?

The Skybrid's long tracks allow it to work with a broad range of modern plate-mount foils, so there is no single correct foil. Your foil choice should reflect how you want the board to behave.

For accessible wing freeride

A more moderate-aspect foil with predictable lift makes the Skybrid exceptionally easy to use. Within the Duotone range, the Free 2.0 sits in the all-round freeride category and is a sensible option where straightforward take-off and intuitive control matter more than maximum glide.

For wave riding and freefly

The Crest SLS is the more manoeuvrable option. Its medium aspect design, forgiving stall characteristics and turning response make it relevant for riders using the Skybrid to freefly, carve bumps and ride smaller waves.

For glide, parawing and light wind

The Glide 3.0 SLS takes the concept in the opposite direction. With an aspect ratio around 12, it is designed around pump and glide efficiency. Combined with the Skybrid's efficient mid-length waterline, this can create a highly capable setup for marginal wind, parawing and longer freefly sections.

Which Duotone mast length?

Duotone positions the 84cm Carbon Mast SLS 2.0 as its all-round mast length for most wing foiling conditions. For many Skybrid riders, that is the logical place to start.

• 76cm: easier clearance management and suited to shallower water, parawing, prone, pump and progression-focused riding.
• 84cm: the all-round wing foil option for most conditions.
• 92cm: more suitable for high-speed riding, larger swell and riders wanting additional mast height.

There is no benefit in buying a longer mast simply because it is perceived as more advanced. Your local depth, swell size, foil span and riding style matter more.

Who should buy the Duotone Skybrid SLS 2027?

We would put the Skybrid SLS high on the shortlist for:

• Intermediate wing foilers moving away from a wide beginner board.
• Experienced riders wanting earlier light-wind take-offs without using a full downwind board.
• Wing foilers who want a faster, more efficient board but still value stability.
• Riders using footstraps and riding powered at speed.
• Freefly riders who want to flag the wing and connect rolling swell.
• Riders starting to add parawing sessions without buying a dedicated parawing board immediately.
• Foil Assist users who want one board that still works exceptionally well for normal winging.
• Riders looking for premium carbon performance but who do not need the extreme construction of D/LAB.

Who may be better on a different board?

Absolute beginners: although the Skybrid is one of the more accessible performance mid-lengths, its 19.5" to 22" widths mean it is not Duotone's dedicated first-flight platform. A wider board may make initial progression significantly easier.

Dedicated freestyle riders: choose Sky Style SLS if rotational swing weight, jumping and freestyle re-pop are your priorities.

Dedicated parawingers: the Paradox SLS is designed to pump onto foil earlier and has a more agile, surf-orientated character.

Maximum Foil Assist surf performance: look at the Midfish, which has been developed specifically around Foil Assist use.

Riders chasing the lightest possible board: step up to the Skybrid D/LAB.
