Description
The Foil Drive 40V Fast Charger 8A is the quicker charging option for compatible 40V Foil Drive Gen 2 batteries. With twice the current output of the standard 4A charger, it is designed for riders who want to reduce turnaround time between sessions, recharge a larger MAX battery more quickly or keep a second session realistic without waiting most of the day for the battery to recover.
For compatible batteries, this is a particularly useful upgrade if you ride regularly, carry more than one battery or frequently use a high-capacity Foil Drive MAX setup. Foil Drive quote a charging time of approximately 2 hours for the 594Wh MAX High Power Battery, compared with around 4 hours using the standard 40V 4A charger.
Compatibility matters. This is a 40V Gen 2 charger. It must not be confused with the newer 43V charging system used by Foil Drive Gen 2.5 MAX+ and Fusion, or the separate 28V charger used by the Slim Endurance Battery.
If you are unsure which Foil Drive generation or battery you own, contact us before connecting a charger. Matching the battery voltage and approved charging system is essential.

An 8A charger does not make the Foil Drive more powerful on the water. It simply reduces the time required to recharge an approved battery.
Actual charge time will vary with battery capacity, remaining state of charge, battery temperature and charging conditions.
Who is the Foil Drive Fast Charger for?
Riders with larger MAX batteries
The larger the battery, the more useful fast charging becomes. A Foil Drive MAX High Power Battery stores 594Wh, so reducing a typical full charge from around four hours to approximately two hours can make a real difference to how you use the system.
Two-session days
If you regularly foil in the morning and want another session later in the day, an 8A charger can make recharging during lunch, travel or a break much more practical.
Riders sharing equipment
For families, coaching environments or groups using the same Foil Drive setup, reducing the time between battery cycles can keep the equipment in use rather than sitting on charge.
Anyone carrying more than one battery
If you already run several compatible 40V batteries, a fast charger can be more useful than simply adding another slow charger. It helps turn batteries around more quickly during a busy day.

Always check the specific battery instructions before fast charging. Not every battery used within the wider Foil Drive Gen 2 family uses the same voltage or supports the same charging rate.
What should NOT be charged with the 40V Fast Charger?
Foil Drive Gen 2.5 MAX+ and Fusion batteries
Do not use this charger with the Foil Drive FM+ 650, Fusion 860 or other Gen 2.5 43V batteries. MAX+ and Fusion use a newer 43.2V battery architecture and require the correct Foil Drive 43V charger.
Slim Endurance Battery
The Foil Drive Slim Endurance Battery operates on a 28V architecture. It must be charged with the dedicated 28V charger and must never be connected to a 40V charger.
Slim Travel Battery
Although the Slim Travel Battery is a 40V battery system, Foil Drive specifically state that it must not be charged using the 40V Fast Charger. Use the approved standard 40V charger instead.
Unknown or unverified batteries
Never assume that a charger is compatible simply because the plug physically fits. Confirm the battery voltage, model and current Foil Drive charging guidance before connection.
40V Gen 2 vs 43V Gen 2.5: an important distinction
The introduction of MAX+ and Fusion means there are now different Foil Drive voltage platforms in circulation.

This means an older Assist MAX owner looking for a quicker charger may need this 40V 8A model, while a MAX+ owner needs the newer 43V charging system instead.
If you are moving from an older Assist MAX to the new MAX+, your existing 40V charger does not carry across to the new battery platform.

The 594Wh MAX High Power Battery is a good example of where the fast charger makes a noticeable difference.
Foil Drive currently quote:

For someone using the High Power Battery regularly, that can turn charging from an overnight process into something realistic between sessions.
The same principle applies to other approved batteries, although exact charging time depends on battery capacity and starting charge level.
Safe Foil Drive battery charging
Foil Drive batteries contain high-energy lithium-ion cells, so charging should always be treated as part of normal equipment care rather than simply plugging the battery in wherever convenient.
Before every charge:
- confirm the voltage marked on the battery;
- confirm that the charger is approved for that exact battery;
- inspect the battery, charging connector and charger for visible damage;
- make sure electrical contacts are clean and dry;
- charge in a dry, appropriate and well-ventilated location;
- do not charge a battery that is swollen, damaged or has suffered a significant impact;
- allow the battery to cool appropriately after use before charging;
- follow the current Foil Drive battery and charger manual.
Never use charger connector fit alone as proof of compatibility. Foil Drive currently has 28V, 40V and 43V battery systems, and they are not universally interchangeable.

Can I use it with the Slim Travel Battery?
No. Foil Drive specifically state that the Slim Travel Battery must not be charged with the 40V Fast Charger. Use the appropriate standard 40V charger instead.
Can I use it with Foil Drive MAX+?
No. MAX+ is part of Foil Drive's newer Gen 2.5 platform and uses a 43.2V battery system. MAX+ requires the appropriate 43V Foil Drive charger.
Can I use it with the FM+ 650 Battery?
No. The FM+ 650 is a 43.2V Gen 2.5 battery used with MAX+ and compatible Fusion installations. It requires the 43V charging system.
Can I use it with a Fusion 860 Battery?
No. Fusion is a Gen 2.5 43V system and requires its compatible 43V charger.
Does fast charging give me more power on the water?
No. The charger only changes how quickly an approved battery is recharged. Motor power, thrust and runtime are determined by the battery, motor and Foil Drive configuration.
Should I replace my standard charger with the fast charger?
Not necessarily. If you normally charge overnight, the standard charger may already suit you perfectly. The fast charger is most valuable when reducing turnaround time between sessions is genuinely useful.
How do I know whether my Foil Drive is 40V or 43V?
