MSL®800 Future Series construction

Construction matters particularly on a 14-foot inflatable. The longer a board becomes, the more important longitudinal stiffness is because excessive flex wastes energy every time you load the paddle.

Red Paddle Co's MSL®800 double-drop-stitch construction is designed to give the Future Series a lighter, stiffer and more responsive character. The 14' Sport weighs approximately 11.1kg, which is impressively manageable for a full-length 14-foot touring and fitness board.

On the water that lighter construction translates into easier acceleration and a livelier feel. On land it also matters: carrying a 14-footer from the car, completing portages or moving the board around a launch point is much easier when unnecessary board weight has been removed.

RSS Rocker Stiffening System

Two removable RSS battens slide into dedicated pockets along the rails. Once installed they reinforce an area of the board that would otherwise be prone to flex, with Red Paddle Co stating that the system can increase stiffness by up to 40%.

The practical benefit is simple: the board holds its shape more effectively when you are paddling hard. That gives the 14' Sport a more direct feel and helps maintain momentum during fitness sessions and longer distance paddles.

Speed Tail – cleaner release and less drag

A conventional inflatable paddleboard normally finishes with a rounded rail at the tail. Water can cling to that radius as it leaves the board, creating additional drag.

Red Paddle Co's Speed Tail gives the back of the board a defined hard-release edge. Water separates more cleanly from the hull, helping the board glide more efficiently and making each stroke feel more productive.

It is one of those features that makes considerably more sense on a board like this than on a casual all-round SUP: when you are covering several miles, small gains in efficiency add up.

14'0" x 28" – fast without becoming a full race board

The dimensions are central to the appeal of this model. Fourteen feet gives the Sport a long effective waterline, while 28" keeps the board narrow enough to paddle efficiently.

A narrower board also lets you place the paddle closer to the centreline. That helps produce a cleaner stroke and can reduce the amount of corrective paddling needed to keep the board travelling straight.

It is not, however, a board we would automatically recommend to every first-time paddler. At 28" wide it expects a reasonable level of balance. If you are coming from a 32–34" all-round SUP, expect the Sport to feel more responsive beneath your feet initially. Most competent paddlers quickly adapt, but the speed advantage only becomes worthwhile if you are comfortable enough to paddle the board properly.

Sport vs Voyager vs Elite

There are three very different 14-foot directions within the Red Paddle Co range, and choosing the right one is more important than simply choosing the fastest-looking board.

• Choose the 14' Sport Future Series if you want fast touring, fitness, endurance paddling and a balance between speed and usable stability.
• Choose the 14'0 Voyager Future Series if touring, carrying equipment and confidence in more varied conditions matter more than outright pace. At 30" wide with significantly more volume and additional touring capability, it is the adventure-oriented choice.
• Choose the 14'0 Elite Future Series if performance and racing are the priority. Its 26" width is faster but requires noticeably more balance and commitment.

If 14' feels unnecessarily long for your paddling, the Red Paddle Co 11'3 Sport Future Series is considerably easier to manage while still providing a meaningful performance upgrade from an all-round board.

Which paddle should you use?

A fast 14-foot board exposes the shortcomings of a heavy paddle much more quickly than a recreational all-round SUP. For distance paddling, paddle weight, blade efficiency and shaft feel make a considerable difference to fatigue.
