AXIS Foils Explained: Best Wing, SUP, Parawing and Downwind Setups

AXIS is one of the most tunable foil systems available, but that is also what can make it confusing.

Which front wing should you choose? Should you be on a Short, Ultrashort or Crazyshort fuselage? Is a Progressive rear wing better than a Skinny? What is the difference between BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link? And most importantly, which AXIS setup is right for your weight, ability and the way you actually ride?

This guide is designed to make the AXIS range easier to understand. It explains the main AXIS foil components in plain English, shows how the current BLACK Advance+ system fits together, and gives sensible starting points for wing foiling, SUP foiling, parawing, downwind and pump foiling.

If you already know you want to shop the range, you can browse our full AXIS Foils collection at The SUP Company. If you are unsure, this guide should help you narrow things down before you buy.

Why AXIS is different

AXIS is a modular foil system. That means you can build a setup around your current level, then upgrade individual parts as your riding improves.

You do not necessarily need to replace everything when you progress. Often, changing a front wing, rear wing, fuselage or mast is enough to make the same foil system feel easier, faster, looser, more stable or more efficient.

That is a big reason AXIS suits riders who are progressing quickly. A forgiving first setup can become a more performance-focused setup later, provided the components are chosen correctly.

Why buy AXIS from The SUP Company?

Foils are not just a spec-sheet purchase. Two setups can look similar on paper and feel completely different on the water.

At The SUP Company, we work with real riders choosing kit for real UK conditions: gusty coastal wind, Solent-style chop, lighter summer days, sheltered water sessions, wave riding, parawing, downwind and progression from first flights through to more advanced foiling.

We are a proper specialist retailer with physical locations, real product advice and demo opportunities. For wing, foil, foil assist and selected technical kit, our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington gives suitable customers the chance to try carefully selected equipment before committing.

That matters with AXIS, because the right setup is rarely just “the biggest wing” or “the fastest wing”. It is the right combination of front wing, rear wing, fuselage, mast and board for you.

Start here: the five parts of an AXIS foil setup

Every AXIS foil setup is built from a few key parts. Understanding what each one does makes the buying decision much easier.

Component What it does Why it matters
Front wing Creates most of the lift Controls early lift, speed, glide, turning and discipline suitability
Rear wing / stabiliser Fine-tunes balance and control Changes pitch stability, drag, turning feel and efficiency
Fuselage Connects the mast, front wing and rear wing Changes stability, pitch control, turning radius and surf feel
Mast Connects the board to the foil Affects clearance, stiffness, control and performance in chop
Board Gets you moving and helps take-off Board volume, length and shape affect starts, touchdowns and progression

The best AXIS setup is the one where all five parts work together. A brilliant front wing can still feel wrong if it is paired with the wrong rear wing, fuselage or mast.

Important AXIS compatibility rule: BLACK Advance+ vs Ti-Link

The current AXIS range spans two distinct foil systems: BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link / Tempo.

The most important rule is simple: BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link are not interchangeable systems.

For most riders shopping the current AXIS range at The SUP Company, BLACK Advance+ is the main system to understand. It is the platform used for key front wing families such as Surge, Fireball and PNG V2, and it works with standard AXIS rear wings including Progressive, Skinny and Surf Skinny.

System Main use Compatible front wings Rear wing compatibility Best suited to
BLACK Advance+ Main AXIS modular system Surge, Fireball, PNG V2 and other compatible BLACK system wings Standard AXIS rear wings fit without adapter Wing foiling, surf, SUP, parawing, pump and downwind progression
Ti-Link / Tempo High-end race and elite downwind platform Tempo only Native Skinny Link rear wings, or standard rear wings with the correct adapter Advanced downwind racing, elite winging and maximum efficiency

If you are unsure what system your current AXIS parts belong to, ask us before ordering. Compatibility mistakes are easy to make and can be expensive.

AXIS front wings explained

The front wing is the engine of your foil. It has the biggest influence on lift, glide, speed, carving and what the foil is best suited to.

The current AXIS range is broad, but for most customers we would start by understanding these key families.

AXIS front wing Sizes Primary use Choose this if...
AXIS Spitfire Including 1100 / 1180 Beginner-friendly wing foiling, surfy progression, early lift You want stable early lift, forgiveness and a confident entry into AXIS wing foiling
AXIS Surge 740 / 780 / 830 / 890 / 950 / 1010mm Surf, wing, parawing, SUP/prone and tight carving You are progressing and want a more lively, connected foil with tighter turns and useful glide
AXIS Fireball 880 / 940 / 1000 / 1070 / 1160 / 1250 / 1350 / 1500 / 1750mm SUP downwind, pump foiling and open-water glide You want high-aspect efficiency, longer glide and better open-water performance
AXIS PNG V2 1200 / 1300 / 1400mm Light-wind winging, beginner downwind, pump and dock start crossover You want low-speed lift, easy glide and a more forgiving pump-and-glide style setup

Choose the AXIS Spitfire if...

Choose the AXIS Spitfire if you want the easiest route into a confidence-building AXIS wing foil setup. The larger Spitfire sizes are a sensible beginner entry point because they offer stable early lift and good all-round forgiveness.

For a first proper AXIS wing setup, Spitfire 1100 or 1180 with a larger Progressive rear wing and Black Advance+ Short fuselage is a very sensible place to start.

Choose the AXIS Surge if...

Choose the AXIS Surge if you are already progressing and want your foil to feel more alive in turns. It is the more surf-led option in this group, with a tighter carving feel and enough glide to work well for wing foiling, parawing, SUP/prone and wave-focused riding.

Surge 950 or 1010 suits many progressing wing foilers. Surge 890 is a strong direction for more committed wave and parawing riders, especially when paired with an Ultrashort fuselage and Surf Skinny rear wing.

Choose the AXIS Fireball if...

Choose the AXIS Fireball if your riding is moving towards downwind, open-water glide, pumping efficiency or longer flight lines. It is a high-aspect wing family and suits riders who want to carry speed and link sections more efficiently.

For Fireball and other high-aspect wings, a stiffer mast becomes more important. A Power Carbon or Ultra Pro Carbon mast can help reduce flex and make the setup feel more responsive.

Choose the AXIS PNG V2 if...

Choose the AXIS PNG V2 if you want accessible lift, pump-and-glide performance and a crossover foil for light-wind winging, beginner downwind or dock-start style riding.

It is not the same feel as a Surge. The PNG V2 is more about glide and staying on foil with minimal fuss. The Surge is livelier and more turn-focused.

AXIS BLACK Advance+ fuselages explained

The fuselage has a huge effect on how your foil feels. It changes the distance between the front wing and rear wing, which affects stability, pitch control and turning response.

The BLACK Advance+ fuselage is the main foundation for the current Surge, Fireball and PNG V2 setups. Standard AXIS rear wings fit BLACK Advance+ fuselages without an adapter.

You can browse the current AXIS Advance+ B-Series fuselages here.

Fuselage Length Best suited to How it feels
Black Advance+ Short 700mm Beginner to intermediate riders Most stable, best for learning and pitch control
Black Advance+ Ultrashort 640mm Intermediate to advanced riders More manoeuvrable, versatile and widely used by progressing riders
Black Advance+ Crazyshort 600mm Advanced surf, prone and wave-focused riders Looser, tighter turning and more surf-style feel

The simple version is:

  • Longer fuselage = more pitch stability, smoother control and easier learning.
  • Shorter fuselage = looser feel, tighter turns and more surf-style response.

Most riders progress from Short to Ultrashort over time. Crazyshort is more specialist and generally better suited to riders who already have good foil control.

AXIS rear wings explained

The rear wing, or stabiliser, is one of the easiest ways to change the feel of your foil without replacing the whole setup.

A larger, more stable rear wing gives more lift and pitch control. A smaller or lower-drag rear wing can make the foil faster, looser and more efficient, but it also asks more of the rider.

Rear wing family Best suited to Choose this if...
AXIS Progressive Beginner to intermediate riders, wing foiling progression and wave turning You want stability, turning confidence and a sensible progression rear wing
AXIS Skinny Glide-focused riding, downwind, dock starting and lower drag setups You want better glide, lower drag and a more efficient feel at speed
AXIS Surf Skinny Intermediate to advanced wave, prone, SUP, wing and parawing riders You want the glide of a Skinny with more precise surf-focused control

Rear wing progression for wing foiling

For wing foiling, a sensible AXIS rear wing progression often looks like this:

  • 425 / 450 Progressive – learn on this if you want stability and confidence.
  • 375 / 400 Progressive – a good progression step as control improves.
  • 325 Progressive – more whippy, turny and responsive.
  • 300 / 320 Surf Skinny – better for intermediate to advanced wave and parawing riders.

Do not rush into too small or too pitch-sensitive a rear wing. A faster rear wing is only useful if you can still control the foil comfortably.

AXIS masts explained

The mast affects stiffness, clearance and control. It is also one of the parts that becomes more important as your wings get faster, wider or higher aspect.

Mast type Sizes Compatible system Best suited to
AXIS Aluminium 75 / 82 / 90 / 105cm BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link Entry and intermediate riders, value-focused builds and general progression
AXIS Power Carbon 750 / 820 / 900mm BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link Riders wanting more stiffness, especially with Fireball and faster/high-aspect setups
AXIS Ultra Pro Carbon 800 / 900 / 1050mm BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link Advanced downwind, Tempo, elite winging and maximum rigidity

Choose an aluminium mast if you are building your first AXIS setup or want a more affordable, practical route into the system.

Choose a Power Carbon mast if you are using higher-aspect wings such as Fireball, want less flex, or are starting to notice the limits of aluminium in harder turns, chop or faster riding.

Choose Ultra Pro Carbon if you are an advanced rider chasing maximum stiffness, downwind efficiency or high-end race performance.

Recommended AXIS complete setups

These are not the only possible AXIS setups, but they are sensible starting points. Rider weight, ability, board choice, wind strength and local conditions all affect the final recommendation.

Top three AXIS setups for wing and parawing progression

Rider profile Front wing Rear wing Fuselage Why it works
Beginner wingfoiler Spitfire 1100 / 1180 Progressive 425 / 450 Black Advance+ Short Stable early lift, good forgiveness and a calmer learning platform
Intermediate wingfoiler Surge 950 / 1010 Progressive 375 / 400 Black Advance+ Short or Ultrashort More response, tighter turning and better progression without going too extreme
Intermediate / advanced wing and parawing rider Surge 890 Surf Skinny 300 / 45 Black Advance+ Ultrashort Looser, more precise and better suited to wave, parawing and committed carving

Best AXIS setup for beginner wing foiling

For a beginner wing foiler or someone riding in lighter wind, we would usually prioritise early lift, pitch stability and control.

Component Suggested direction
Front wing Spitfire larger sizes, such as 1100 / 1180
Rear wing Progressive larger sizes, such as 425 / 450
Fuselage Black Advance+ Short
Mast Aluminium 82cm as a common all-round starting point

This sort of setup is not about maximum speed. It is about getting flying earlier, staying in control and building good habits.

Best AXIS setup for progressing wing foilers

If you are already flying both ways, starting to gybe, and want the foil to feel more responsive, the Surge range becomes very interesting.

Component Suggested direction
Front wing Surge 950 / 1010
Rear wing Progressive 375 / 400
Fuselage Black Advance+ Short for extra stability, Ultrashort for a looser feel
Mast Aluminium 82cm or carbon if stiffness is becoming important

This is the point where setup choice becomes more personal. Some riders prefer to keep the Short fuselage for confidence. Others move to Ultrashort because they want a tighter, more reactive foil.

Best AXIS setup for parawing foiling

Parawing puts a lot of focus on glide, control and what the foil feels like once the wing is packed away. You need enough early lift to get going, but you also want the foil to turn and carry smoothly.

Component Suggested direction
Front wing Surge, with Surge 890 a strong option for committed riders
Rear wing Surf Skinny, such as 300 / 45 or 320 / 48 depending on rider and conditions
Fuselage Black Advance+ Ultrashort
Mast 82cm aluminium or carbon depending on budget, stiffness needs and water state

A Surf Skinny rear wing is more pitch-sensitive than a Progressive, so this is not where we would usually start a beginner. It makes more sense once your foil control is already established.

Best AXIS setup for SUP and prone downwind foiling

Downwind foiling needs glide, predictable lift and enough stiffness through the system to make the foil feel connected under load.

Rider profile Front wing Rear wing Fuselage Mast
Beginner downwind / crossover PNG V2 Skinny or suitable stable rear wing Black Advance+ Short or Ultrashort Aluminium or Power Carbon depending on budget and performance needs
Intermediate downwind Fireball Skinny Black Advance+ Ultrashort Power Carbon 82cm as a strong direction
Advanced / race-focused Tempo Skinny Link Ti-Link 270mm Ultra Pro Carbon

For most customers, we would focus the recommendation around BLACK Advance+ unless you are specifically looking at a high-end Tempo / Ti-Link race-style platform.

Best AXIS setup for pump foiling and dock starts

For pump foiling and dock starts, low-speed lift and efficient glide are key.

Component Suggested direction
Front wing PNG V2
Rear wing Pump V2 or suitable low-drag rear wing
Fuselage Black Advance+ Short for stability, or Ultrashort as control improves
Mast Aluminium 75 / 82cm depending on depth, dock height and control

How to upgrade your AXIS foil without replacing everything

One of the best things about AXIS is that you can upgrade the feel of your setup in stages.

What you want to improve Consider changing Typical direction
More stability Rear wing or fuselage Larger rear wing or longer fuselage
Earlier lift Front wing Larger or lower-stall front wing
More speed Front wing or rear wing Faster front wing or smaller/lower-drag rear wing
More glide Front wing, rear wing or mast Fireball / PNG V2 direction, Skinny rear wing, stiffer mast
Tighter turns Fuselage or rear wing Ultrashort fuselage, smaller Progressive or Surf Skinny rear wing
Less flex Mast Move from aluminium to Power Carbon or Ultra Pro Carbon

Our advice is usually not to upgrade everything at once. Change one part at a time where possible, so you can feel what each change has actually done.

AXIS Tempo and Ti-Link: where it fits

Tempo is AXIS’s high-end race, downwind and elite winging platform. It is built around the Ti-Link titanium fuselage and is not interchangeable with BLACK Advance+ components.

That matters. A customer riding Surge, Fireball or PNG V2 on BLACK Advance+ should not assume Tempo parts will simply bolt into the same setup.

Tempo is best understood as a specialist platform for advanced riders chasing maximum efficiency, stiffness and speed. It is not the obvious choice for beginners, casual wing foilers or riders who want the broadest compatibility across the standard BLACK Advance+ ecosystem.

Real-world UK setup notes

In UK conditions, the “fastest” setup on paper is not always the best setup on the water.

For gusty coastal wing foiling, many riders are better served by a foil that lifts early, handles lulls and stays calm through messy water.

For Solent-style chop, mast length and stiffness become important. An 82cm mast is a common all-round direction for winging, while carbon becomes more appealing as speed, leverage and front wing span increase.

For lighter summer wind, do not under-foil yourself too early. A slightly bigger or more efficient front wing can keep you riding when a smaller high-speed wing would leave you slogging.

For parawing and downwind, glide and board speed matter. The foil is only part of the equation; board choice and rider technique are just as important.

Try AXIS before you buy

AXIS is a brilliant system, but it rewards good setup advice.

If you are choosing between Spitfire and Surge, Short and Ultrashort, Progressive and Surf Skinny, or aluminium and carbon, a proper conversation can save you buying the wrong part.

For suitable customers, our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington is designed to help you test selected wing, foil and technical equipment in a more meaningful way before buying. It is not general hire or beginner tuition. It is a sales-led demo service for customers actively choosing their next setup.

You can also shop the AXIS range online or contact the team for advice before ordering.

Finance and delivery

AXIS setups can be a serious investment, especially when you are building a complete foil from front wing, rear wing, fuselage and mast.

Finance options are available on qualifying orders, which can be useful when investing in a complete foil setup or higher-value carbon components. Availability, delivery timing and collection options can vary by product and variant, so if timing matters, speak to the team before ordering.

AXIS Foils FAQs

Is AXIS a good foil brand for beginners?

Yes, provided the setup is chosen sensibly. A beginner should prioritise early lift, stability and pitch control rather than chasing the fastest or loosest setup. A larger Spitfire, larger Progressive rear wing and Black Advance+ Short fuselage is a much more confidence-building direction than jumping straight onto a small, advanced setup.

What is the best AXIS setup for beginner wing foiling?

A sensible beginner wing foil setup would usually start around a larger Spitfire front wing, Progressive 425 or 450 rear wing, Black Advance+ Short fuselage and an aluminium mast around 82cm. Rider weight, board size and wind strength still need to be considered.

What is the difference between AXIS Spitfire and AXIS Surge?

The Spitfire is the more forgiving beginner-friendly direction in larger sizes, with stable early lift and good all-round control. The Surge is more lively, surf-led and turn-focused, making it better for progressing riders, wave riding, parawing and tighter carving.

What is the difference between AXIS Fireball and PNG V2?

The Fireball is a high-aspect glide wing aimed at downwind, pump foiling and open-water efficiency. The PNG V2 is more crossover focused, with useful low-speed lift for light-wind winging, beginner downwind, pumping and dock-start style riding.

Should I choose a Short or Ultrashort AXIS fuselage?

Choose the Short fuselage if you want more stability and easier pitch control. Choose the Ultrashort if you are progressing and want a looser, more manoeuvrable feel. Many riders start on Short and move to Ultrashort as their control improves.

Are AXIS BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link compatible?

No. BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link are separate AXIS systems. Ti-Link is designed around the Tempo platform and is not interchangeable with BLACK Advance+ components. If you are unsure what fits your current setup, ask before ordering.

Do standard AXIS rear wings fit BLACK Advance+ fuselages?

Yes. Standard AXIS rear wings such as Progressive, Skinny and Surf Skinny fit BLACK Advance+ fuselages without an adapter.

Which AXIS rear wing should I choose?

Choose Progressive if you want stability, turning confidence and sensible progression. Choose Skinny if you want lower drag and better glide. Choose Surf Skinny if you are an intermediate or advanced rider wanting more precise wave, wing or parawing control.

Should I upgrade my AXIS mast to carbon?

Upgrade to carbon if you want more stiffness, better response and less flex, especially with higher-aspect wings such as Fireball or faster downwind-style setups. Aluminium is still a sensible option for entry and intermediate riders, especially when budget matters.

Can The SUP Company help me build a bespoke AXIS setup?

Yes. Tell us your weight, ability, board, local conditions and what you want to improve, and we can recommend a sensible AXIS setup or upgrade path. For suitable customers, selected kit may also be available through the Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington.

Final advice

AXIS is a brilliant system if you choose it properly. The modularity gives you a clear progression path, but compatibility and component choice matter.

For most riders, the smartest route is to start with a balanced BLACK Advance+ setup that suits your current ability, then upgrade one part at a time as your riding improves.
