Description
AXIS 19mm Aluminium Foil Mast – Black
The new AXIS 19mm Black Aluminium Foil Mast takes one of the most proven parts of the AXIS foil system and gives it a worthwhile update rather than changing what already worked. The familiar stiff 19mm aluminium mast profile remains, but the latest generation is now black anodised, internally sealed and redesigned around AXIS's new black mast connection system.
Available in 45cm, 60cm, 68cm, 75cm, 82cm, 90cm and 105cm lengths, we offer every size from this single product page. Simply select the mast length that best suits your foil discipline, ability and local water conditions.
This remains one of the most sensible mast choices in the AXIS foil range. It is considerably less expensive than moving immediately to a high-modulus carbon mast, yet provides the solid, predictable connection that has made the 19mm AXIS aluminium system popular with everyone from first-time foilers to experienced riders using larger front wings.
What is new with the black AXIS 19mm aluminium mast?
This is more than the previous mast finished in black. AXIS has reworked the surrounding aluminium mast system to improve the connections at both ends of the mast.
- New black anodised finish – the complete mast has a clean black finish designed for use in both salt and fresh water.
- Reworked base connection – a new tapered mast bevel works with the redesigned black base plate and its split, cross-stabilising bolt to create a more rigid mast-to-board connection.
- Internally sealed mast – helps prevent water ingress into the mast, avoiding unnecessary water weight while also helping protect the inside of the extrusion.
- Proven 19mm mast section – retains the stiff, direct and predictable feel for which the AXIS aluminium mast has become known.
- Seven mast lengths – choose from 45cm through to 105cm without changing foil system.
- Extensive AXIS compatibility – works across the AXIS fuselage ecosystem when used with the appropriate Doodad, including the newer FATTY system with its dedicated FATTY Doodad.
- Backwards compatible – the new black mast can also be used with previous-generation AXIS 19mm base plates and Doodads.
Why choose the AXIS 19mm aluminium mast?
Mast stiffness matters because every input from your feet has to travel through the mast before it reaches the foil. Excessive flex or twist can make a foil feel vague, particularly with bigger-span wings, heavier riders or when carving harder.
AXIS quotes its 19mm aluminium section as delivering around a 2.24-times stiffness improvement compared with many conventional 15mm aluminium mast sections. The practical result is a mast that feels unusually solid for an aluminium system, with clear feedback through turns and good control of larger front wings.
That is why we would not regard this simply as the 'budget mast'. For many AXIS riders it may be all the mast they actually need. Aluminium carries a weight and drag penalty compared with the best carbon options, but in return you get excellent stiffness, durability, a huge choice of lengths and a much lower replacement cost.
It is particularly well suited to riders who want to build a versatile AXIS quiver. Owning, for example, a shorter surf or pump mast alongside a longer wing mast is far more achievable at aluminium-mast pricing, and changing between mast lengths does not require you to replace the remainder of your foil.
Which AXIS 19mm mast length should I choose?
Mast length changes much more than simply how high you fly. A shorter mast is easier to learn on, works better in shallow water and reduces the consequences of breaching or touching down. A longer mast gives you more room to deal with chop, steeper swell, higher speeds and bigger changes in board height.
| Size | Best suited to | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| 45cm | First flights, teaching and very shallow water | The easiest mast on which to understand foil height control, but most riders will progress beyond it fairly quickly. |
| 60cm | Learning, shallow-water surf, wake and early progression | A very useful progression mast where 45cm is becoming restrictive but a full-height mast still feels unnecessary. |
| 68cm | Prone surf, SUP foil, wake and shallower venues | A great short all-round mast for riders who regularly foil over sandbanks, reefs or lower-tide locations. |
| 75cm | Prone, SUP, pump, dock start, wake and crossover wing use | Probably the most versatile shorter mast in the range. Long enough for proper riding but still manageable, surf-friendly and relatively forgiving. |
| 82cm | Wing, SUP, surf, pump, downwind and crossover riding | The sweet spot if 75cm feels limiting but you do not want the full height of a 90cm mast. An excellent one-mast option for mixed disciplines. |
| 90cm | Wing foiling, kite foiling, tow, open-water riding and bigger chop | The established choice for general wing foiling, giving plenty of clearance for chop, powered turns and open-water conditions. |
| 105cm | Big swell, tow, high-speed wing or kite foiling and specialist use | A specialist long mast. Choose it because you genuinely need the extra clearance rather than simply assuming longer is better. |
Our most popular choices
If you are unsure where to start, we would normally narrow the range down to three sizes. The 75cm is particularly good for surf, SUP, pump and riders who value a slightly shorter, easier-to-control setup. The 82cm is an excellent crossover mast and arguably the strongest single-mast choice for someone mixing surfier riding with wing foiling. The 90cm remains the obvious choice for riders primarily wing foiling in open water or choppier conditions.
The 45cm and 60cm sizes are more progression or shallow-water specific, while the 105cm is aimed at riders with a clear requirement for maximum clearance.
The new black mast connection
One of the most interesting updates is at the mast-to-base connection. When the new black mast is paired with the latest AXIS black base plate, a tapered mast bevel and split cross-stabilising bolt help lock the two components together more securely. The aim is greater overall system stiffness, increased strength and a more durable connection over time.
If you are building a completely new setup, pair the mast with the AXIS Foil Base Plate. Riders who already own a previous-generation 19mm AXIS base plate do not necessarily need to replace it: the new black mast is backwards compatible with previous 19mm AXIS base plates.
Important: compatibility does not work in both directions. The latest black mast works with previous-generation 19mm AXIS base plates, but the redesigned new-generation black base plate is not intended for use with the previous red 19mm aluminium mast.
Mast-to-fuselage compatibility
The aluminium mast requires a Doodad between the mast and fuselage. For conventional compatible AXIS fuselages, use the appropriate AXIS Mast Adaptor Doodad.
The new black aluminium system has also expanded compatibility to AXIS's larger FATTY platform. If you want to combine the 19mm aluminium mast with an AXIS FATTY fuselage, you will need the dedicated FATTY Doodad; the standard Doodad is not interchangeable with the FATTY version.
If you are uncertain which Doodad you require, browse our AXIS foil components or contact us before ordering. AXIS is extremely modular, but getting the mast, Doodad and fuselage interfaces correct is important.
Aluminium or carbon?
The 19mm aluminium mast is the value and practicality choice, but it should not be confused with an entry-level mast that has to be replaced as soon as you improve. Its stiffness means plenty of very capable riders continue using aluminium, particularly with larger foils where a solid connection is important.
Moving to carbon starts to make more sense when reducing weight and drag becomes a priority. Pump, downwind and higher-performance surf riders can particularly notice the reduced swing weight and cleaner feel of a good carbon mast, while faster wing foilers may appreciate the more refined response of AXIS's higher-specification carbon options.
If you are deciding between them, see our AXIS Carbon vs Aluminium Mast guide or browse the complete foil mast range.

Care and maintenance
Black anodising and the internally sealed construction improve the practicality of the new mast, but aluminium foil hardware still deserves proper care. After salt-water sessions, rinse the complete foil thoroughly with fresh water. Periodically disassemble the system, inspect the hardware and use an appropriate anti-corrosion barrier on dissimilar-metal threaded connections.
Do not leave stainless or titanium hardware permanently assembled into aluminium components after repeated salt-water use. A little preventative maintenance makes a substantial difference to the long-term condition of any aluminium foil system.
Need help choosing your AXIS mast?
If you are between sizes, tell us your weight, board, front wing, current mast length, ability and the type of foiling you do most often. We can normally narrow the choice down very quickly. Mast length is one of the easiest AXIS components to get right once we understand where and how you ride.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the new black AXIS 19mm mast?
Yes. This listing is for the latest black anodised AXIS 19mm aluminium mast system, available in seven lengths from 45cm to 105cm.
Is the new black mast just a different colour?
No. The proven 19mm aluminium mast concept remains, but the latest system introduces an internally sealed mast and a revised connection designed around the new black base plate. When used together, the tapered mast bevel and cross-stabilising base connection are intended to increase rigidity, strength and durability.
Can I fit the new black mast to my existing AXIS 19mm base plate?
Yes. AXIS states that the new black 19mm aluminium masts are backwards compatible with previous-generation 19mm AXIS base plates and Doodads.
Can I fit my old red AXIS aluminium mast into the new black base plate?
No. This is an important distinction: the new black mast is backwards compatible with the previous 19mm base plate, but the new-generation black base plate is not designed to accept the previous-generation red aluminium mast.
Do I need a Doodad?
Yes. AXIS aluminium masts use a Doodad to connect the mast to the fuselage. Make sure the Doodad matches both the 19mm mast and the fuselage system you intend to use.
Can the black 19mm mast be used with an AXIS FATTY fuselage?
Yes, but it requires the dedicated AXIS FATTY Doodad. The standard mast-to-fuselage Doodad should not be substituted.
What is the best AXIS mast length for wing foiling?
For general wing foiling, 82cm and 90cm will be the two sizes we would consider first. The 82cm offers an excellent balance of clearance and manoeuvrability, while 90cm gives more room in chop, swell and powered riding. Beginners may prefer 75cm while developing consistent foil-height control.
What is the best AXIS mast length for SUP or surf foiling?
68cm and 75cm are particularly useful for prone and SUP surf foiling, especially where water depth can be limited. The 82cm becomes attractive for bigger surf, more open-water riding or riders wanting additional clearance without moving all the way to 90cm.
What is the best AXIS mast length for pump foiling?
75cm is an excellent starting point for many pump and dock-start setups, with 82cm useful where dock height, water depth or riding style favours additional clearance. Shorter masts can make learning easier, but the correct choice also depends on your dock and local water depth.
Are screws supplied with the mast?
No. The black 19mm aluminium mast is supplied without mounting screws. If you are building a new system rather than replacing a mast, make sure you have the correct AXIS hardware for your base plate, Doodad and fuselage.
Should I buy aluminium or upgrade to an AXIS carbon mast?
Choose the 19mm aluminium mast if stiffness, durability, value and the ability to own multiple lengths matter most. Carbon becomes worthwhile when you are prepared to pay more to reduce weight and drag or want a higher-performance feel for pumping, downwind, surf or faster wing foiling. Aluminium is not merely a beginner option; for many AXIS riders it remains a very capable long-term mast.
