Surf-Inspired Shape – Why the Narrower Outline Matters

Once a good rider is consistently on foil, board width can begin to work against them. Wider boards are brilliant for stability, starts and learning, but as the board is banked further into a carving turn there is more rail available to touch the water.

The Trace SLS takes the opposite approach. Its narrow outline, narrow bottom and pronounced bevels reduce the amount of board beneath and beside the rider. In practice, that means you can increase your bank angle and tighten a carve without the board interfering as readily with the turn.

That is particularly useful in steeper waves where you want to drive down the face, turn tightly in the pocket and redirect quickly rather than draw long, flatter foil turns.

Pointed Nose for Lower Swing Weight and Cleaner Whitewater Entry

The pointed nose is not simply cosmetic. Removing width and area from the front of the board reduces swing weight, which helps the Trace feel faster to redirect when carving, pumping and manoeuvring through the wave.

It also makes sense when getting out through broken water. Rather than presenting a broad nose to an approaching section of whitewater, the Trace has a finer entry designed to cut through with less disruption. The real-world benefit is cleaner release and earlier lift, while the reduced tail area also helps keep the board reactive once airborne. SLS Biax Carbon PVC Construction

SLS stands for Strong Light Superior, and on the Trace SLS the construction is an important part of the board's character rather than simply a weight-saving exercise.

The Trace uses a lightweight EPS core with a sophisticated Biax Carbon PVC Sandwich construction. Full Biax Carbon layers are combined with high-density PVC reinforcement through critical areas, with additional reinforcement around the standing zone and foil track structure.

This provides the stiffness needed to transfer small movements from your feet into the foil without the delayed or muted feeling that can come from a softer board. That direct response becomes particularly noticeable when pumping, making rapid rail-to-rail changes and driving hard through a wave.

At the same time, this is not a delicate ultralight construction designed only to win a weight competition. Duotone has specifically engineered the Trace SLS to withstand the demands of big airs, powerful wave manoeuvres and solid landings.

Direct Connection to the Foil

Carbon reinforcement around the foil tracks creates a stiff platform between the mast and board. This matters on a board such as the Trace because the whole design is based around precision: when you apply heel or toe pressure, you want that input translated into foil movement as directly as possible.

The narrower 140 mm insert arrangement complements this philosophy, giving the rider a compact, controlled relationship with the board and foil.

Duotone Trace SLS 2027 Size Guide

Size-selection tip: do not choose a Trace purely by matching litres to your current board. The narrow widths make these boards more technical than a conventional wing board of the same volume. Rider weight, start technique, foil size, local wind strength and whether you regularly ride in chop all matter.

If you are moving significantly below your body weight in litres, expect starts to become much more technique dependent. For real-world UK wave sessions, choosing enough volume to get going reliably can often be faster overall than taking the smallest board you could theoretically ride.

Trace SLS vs Sky Style SLS

The Sky Style SLS remains the better choice for riders wanting one compact performance board covering freeride, freestyle and waves. Its wider nose and tail provide greater stability around take-off and landing, while the high rocker and compact shape work particularly well for jumping and freestyle.

The Trace SLS goes further towards surfing. Its narrower outline, high-apex bevels and narrow bottom sacrifice some of that static stability in return for additional carving freedom. If your ideal session is predominantly powered freestyle with occasional waves, we would steer towards the Sky Style SLS. If the wave itself has become the main reason you are going out, the Trace becomes considerably more compelling.

Trace SLS vs Paradox SLS

The Duotone Paradox SLS sits on the other side of the Trace. Its longer mid-length concept and low-rocker approach are focused more strongly on efficient release, pumping, parawing, freefly and connecting bumps.

Choose the Paradox if your ideal session involves getting onto foil with minimal power, packing or flagging your power source and connecting energy through the water. Choose the Trace if you want the board to be as compact and unobtrusive as possible while aggressively surfing a wave.
