Duotone Sky Style SLS 2027 Wing Foil Board

The Duotone Sky Style SLS 2027 is the compact performance wing foil board in Duotone’s 2027 range for riders who want to jump higher, rotate faster, carve harder and feel less board beneath their feet once on foil. It is built around freestyle, wave and performance freeride, combining a short outline and low swing weight with enough width through the nose and tail to keep take-offs and landings manageable.

For 2027, Duotone has made a meaningful change rather than simply updating the graphics. A new step tail reduces the amount of board that needs to release from the water, helping this compact shape break free more cleanly during take-off and giving it stronger re-pop when loading jumps and technical manoeuvres. The range has also been refined into seven sizes from an extremely compact 4'2" / 30L through to the much more supportive 5'4" / 95L.

Construction is equally important. The Sky Style SLS uses Duotone’s lightweight Carbon PVC Sandwich SLS construction, full Biax Carbon layers, substantial reinforcement through the standing and foil-track areas, Carbon foil tracks and a cork impact layer beneath the heels. The result is the kind of direct, immediate response that makes a genuine difference when pumping, changing direction or loading the board for a jump.

Our view: the Sky Style SLS is one of the most relevant boards in the Duotone range for a confident wing foiler who has moved beyond simply trying to stay on foil. If your sessions are increasingly about better gybes, harder carving, waves, jumps and freestyle progression, this is where a compact board starts to make sense. If your priority is simply getting flying as early and easily as possible, there are better choices elsewhere in the Duotone range.

What is new for the 2027 Sky Style SLS?

New step tail

The major shape development is the new step tail. Removing wetted surface behind the main planing section helps the tail release rather than dragging through the final part of the take-off.

For normal freeriding, that means a cleaner transition from water to foil. For freestyle, it becomes even more important: when the board is loaded against the water before a jump or reconnects during a manoeuvre, the reduced tail surface helps it release again more quickly.

There is an important distinction here. “Earlier take-off” does not mean the Sky Style SLS suddenly behaves like a long mid-length board. The step tail makes this compact platform more efficient, but riders prioritising marginal-wind glide and the maximum number of easy take-offs should still look towards the Skybrid family. The Sky Style SLS remains the choice when compact handling and performance once flying matter more.

Compact outline with reduced swing weight

Once you are on foil, every unnecessary centimetre of board has to move with you. The short Sky Style SLS outline reduces rotational inertia, helping the board react more quickly when carving, pumping or initiating rotations.

The smaller 2027 sizes are particularly compact, giving advanced riders the option of reducing board length without having to move to a specialist prone or wave-foil shape.

Wide nose and tail

A short board can become unnecessarily difficult if it is also excessively narrow. Duotone balances the compact length with generous width through the nose and tail.

That additional platform helps when getting to your feet, provides more lateral stability during acceleration and gives you more board underneath you when a landing is not perfectly centred. It is one of the reasons the Sky Style SLS can be aggressively compact without becoming a one-dimensional competition board.

High rocker line

The high rocker is there for performance rather than maximum displacement glide. It provides extra clearance when jumping, carving hard or touching down at speed and reduces the chance of the nose becoming an immediate handbrake when it reconnects with the water.

It also helps explain the Sky Style SLS’s place in the range. If your priority is efficient waterline glide, choose a longer board with a flatter rocker. If your priorities are control at speed, manoeuvrability, jumps and recovery from touchdowns, the Sky Style SLS makes considerably more sense.

Why the SLS construction matters

SLS stands for Strong Light Superior, but on a foil board it is more useful to understand what is actually inside the construction and why it matters on the water.

The 2027 Sky Style SLS uses a sophisticated Carbon PVC Sandwich structure built around a lightweight EPS core. Duotone’s construction specification includes:

• Full Biax Carbon outer layers for high stiffness with low overall weight.
• Biax Carbon reinforcement through the stance area to cope with the high loads generated by pumping, jumping and hard foil inputs.
• High-density PVC reinforcement through the deck and rails to strengthen high-stress areas without unnecessarily increasing board weight.
• Dedicated stance-area fibre and bamboo reinforcement to spread rider loads through the board structure.
• 3K Carbon and cork reinforcement through the heel area to combine structural support with impact absorption.
• Carbon reinforcement linking the foil tracks towards the stance area to create a more solid relationship between your feet and the foil.
• Carbon foil tracks for a light, stiff and direct mast-to-board connection.

That construction is particularly worthwhile on this type of board. A recreational board can tolerate a little flex without ruining the experience. A board being pumped aggressively, driven through a fast carve or loaded for a jump benefits much more from stiffness because rider input reaches the foil immediately rather than being absorbed by the board.

It is also why we would not automatically recommend paying for SLS simply because it is the premium option. If your riding will not exploit the lighter weight and sharper response, the standard Sky Style may offer better value. If you are actively progressing into jumps, wave riding and more technical manoeuvres, the SLS construction is much easier to justify.

Cork heel shock absorber

Freestyle foil boards take repeated concentrated loads through the rider’s heels, particularly during harder landings. Duotone incorporates a cork shock-absorbing section in the heel area of the Sky Style SLS to reduce impact load while retaining the direct feel expected from a carbon performance board.

It is a relatively hidden construction detail, but one we think matters on a board designed to be jumped repeatedly. The goal is not to make the deck feel soft; it is to manage peak loads without compromising the stiffness of the overall structure.

Carbon foil tracks with rear openings

The Sky Style SLS uses reinforced Carbon foil tracks with openings at the rear of the tracks. This allows compatible track hardware to be introduced from the rear rather than having to dismantle the track-nut arrangement each time.

It is a small feature that becomes very useful if you regularly remove your foil for transport, change masts or swap between different foil setups.

How should you choose your Sky Style SLS size?

This is one of those boards where choosing by litres alone is a mistake. Your body weight matters, but so do your ability, foil size, wing power, local conditions and whether you are comfortable starting a board that sits partly or completely below the water when stationary.

The 30L, 45L and 55L sizes are specialist performance choices for most adult riders. Their small dimensions are fantastic once flying, but they demand considerably more technique before take-off.

The 65L begins to open the board up to a wider group of experienced riders, while the 75L, 85L and 95L sizes are the obvious starting point for many riders stepping down from a larger freeride board.

As a general principle, a board with a litre volume below your body weight in kilograms should be considered a performance choice rather than an easy floating platform. The further below your body weight you go, the more important water-start technique, foil efficiency and adequate wing power become.

Our advice is not to buy the smallest Sky Style SLS you think you might eventually be able to ride. Buy the smallest size that still lets you get onto foil consistently in the conditions you actually sail. A slightly larger board that gives you ten successful take-offs will normally progress your riding faster than an ultra-small board that gives you three.

Sky Style SLS vs Sky Style 2027

This is an especially important comparison for 2027 because the standard Sky Style is not a completely different design. Duotone describes it as using the proven Sky Style SLS shape in a more accessible construction.

In the overlapping 75L, 85L and 95L sizes, the dimensions are the same:

• 4'11" x 24" – 75L
• 5'2" x 24.5" – 85L
• 5'4" x 25.25" – 95L

The decision in those sizes therefore comes down largely to construction, response and budget.

If you are choosing between the two in 75L, 85L or 95L, we would choose SLS for the rider who will genuinely use the performance advantage. For straightforward freeride use, the standard Sky Style is likely to be the more cost-effective way into the same shape.

Sky Style SLS vs Trace SLS

The introduction of the Trace SLS makes Duotone’s board range easier to understand.

The Sky Style SLS is the more versatile freestyle / freeride / wave crossover. Its wider nose and tail prioritise stability for starts and landings, and its compact shape and high rocker suit jumping and technical manoeuvres.

The Trace SLS is the more specialised wave-performance board. It uses a narrower, surf-oriented outline, pointier nose, high-apex bevelled rails and narrower bottom to maximise turning clearance and surf-style control.

Choose the Sky Style SLS if your riding includes jumps, freestyle, powered freeride and waves. Choose the Trace SLS if wave riding is the clear priority and you want the board to interfere as little as possible when carving aggressively on foil.

Sky Style SLS vs Skybrid SLS

These two boards solve very different problems.

The Skybrid SLS is a mid-length board. Its extra waterline, moderate rocker, bevelled rails and longer shape prioritise glide, pumping efficiency and easier lift onto foil. It is a strong option for freeride, lighter wind, freefly, parawing and crossover use.

The Sky Style SLS gives away some of that displacement glide in return for dramatically more compact handling once airborne.

We would summarise the choice like this:

• Sky Style SLS: jumps, freestyle, compact handling, carving, low swing weight and performance once flying.
• Skybrid SLS: earlier starts, glide, pumping efficiency, lighter-wind use and easier all-round foiling.

Do not choose the Sky Style simply because a shorter board looks more advanced. Choose it because the way you now ride benefits from being on a shorter board.

Who is the Duotone Sky Style SLS 2027 for?

• Confident intermediate riders stepping down from their first larger wing foil board.
• Advanced freeriders wanting a compact and highly responsive board.
• Freestyle riders progressing into jumps, rotations and powered manoeuvres.
• Wave riders who still want a broader all-round platform rather than the more specialised Trace SLS.
• Riders who value low swing weight when pumping, carving and jumping.
• Riders who will appreciate the extra stiffness and response of a Carbon PVC Sandwich construction.
• Experienced riders wanting very low-volume 30L–65L options unavailable in the standard 2027 Sky Style range.

Who should look at something else?

Complete beginners: for most new wing foilers this is too compact and too performance-focused. A larger board that comfortably supports your weight will make the learning process considerably easier.

Light-wind focused riders: if the goal is building speed and taking off with minimum wing power, the longer Skybrid-style platform offers more useful waterline and glide.

Dedicated advanced wave riders: look closely at the Trace SLS. Its narrower surf-specific shape gives greater clearance and a more dedicated wave character.

Value-focused freeriders: in 75L, 85L and 95L, the standard Sky Style gives you the same 2027 shape direction in Duotone’s more accessible Vacuum Sandwich construction.

Building the right foil setup around the Sky Style SLS

The board is only one part of how your setup will feel. A larger, lower-speed foil can make a Sky Style SLS considerably easier to launch, while a smaller performance foil will make the same board faster and more dynamic but increase the technique required during take-off.

Within the 2027 Duotone range, the different foil families allow the Sky Style SLS to be tuned towards different riding styles. Why buy your Sky Style SLS from The SUP Company?
