Description
The Foil Drive FM+ Battery Adaptor is the dedicated adaptor that allows an FM+ battery, including the 648Wh FM+ 650, to fit securely inside a Foil Drive Fusion. It extends the shorter FM+ battery to match the longer battery space of the Fusion unit, creating a secure, tool-free installation without changing the core Fusion system.
This is the small component that gives Fusion owners much more flexibility over battery choice. Fit the larger Fusion 860 when maximum runtime is the priority, or use the FM+ Battery Adaptor with an FM+ 650 when you want to reduce battery weight and give the board a lighter, more responsive feel.
Important: the adaptor is only required when fitting an FM+ battery to a Foil Drive Fusion. It is not required with the Foil Drive Assist MAX+, because FM+ batteries fit MAX+ directly.

What does the Foil Drive FM+ Battery Adaptor do?
The Foil Drive Fusion was designed around a longer battery format. The newer FM+ batteries are shorter, so they cannot simply be placed into the Fusion battery space without the correct support.
The FM+ Battery Adaptor effectively extends the FM+ battery so that it occupies the correct length inside the Fusion. This gives the battery a secure, properly located interface with the Fusion rather than allowing a shorter battery to move within a space designed around the larger Fusion battery.
Integrated Quick Lock Tabs provide a tool-free connection, so changing between battery configurations does not require bolts, separate installation hardware or permanent modifications.
Why use an FM+ battery with Foil Drive Fusion?
The main reason is not simply compatibility. It is the ability to change the character of your Fusion depending on the session.
The standard Fusion 860 battery prioritises maximum capacity and runtime. The FM+ 650 has less capacity, but it is also physically shorter and lighter.

The FM+ 650 battery itself is approximately 0.95kg lighter than the Fusion 860. The adaptor adds approximately 100g, so the FM+ route still provides a meaningful reduction in battery-system weight while retaining 648Wh of capacity.
For surf foiling, downwind, wing foiling and other sessions where the motor is primarily assisting take-off and positioning rather than powering the board continuously, that can be a very useful trade.
Do I need the Foil Drive FM+ Battery Adaptor?
You need this adaptor if:
- you own a Foil Drive Fusion;
- you want to run an FM+ series battery in that Fusion; and
- your Fusion does not already have an FM+ Battery Adaptor supplied with it.
This is particularly relevant to riders who purchased a Fusion before the FM+ battery range was introduced in September 2026. Earlier Fusion packages were not supplied with this adaptor because the FM+ battery range had not yet been released.
Current-generation Fusion packages supplied following the launch of the FM+ batteries include the FM+ Battery Adaptor as part of the complete kit, so check what you already have before ordering another one.

When do you NOT need this adaptor?
You do not need an FM+ Battery Adaptor to use the FM+ 650 with the Foil Drive Assist MAX+.
The MAX+ was designed specifically around the newer FM+ battery architecture, so the FM+ 650 fits directly into the MAX+ system.
The adaptor should therefore not be viewed as a general Foil Drive battery accessory. Its purpose is very specific: adapting the shorter FM+ battery format to the longer Foil Drive Fusion battery installation.
Tool-free Quick Lock installation
The adaptor uses integrated Quick Lock Tabs to create a secure extension between the FM+ battery and the Fusion.
No separate installation bolts or tools are required for the adaptor itself. It connects to the FM+ battery so the combined assembly can be installed into the Fusion in the correct configuration.
This makes it practical to maintain more than one Fusion battery setup. You might use the Fusion 860 for long sessions or sustained powered riding, then switch to the FM+ 650 and adaptor when lower weight is more important.
Why the adaptor is useful for Fusion riders

FM+ 650 + Fusion: who does this setup suit?
Running an FM+ 650 in a Fusion is particularly interesting for riders who like the capabilities of Fusion but do not need the 864Wh Fusion 860 battery for every session.
Surf foiling
If the motor is mainly being used to motor out, reposition, catch waves and recover from falls, carrying the largest available battery is not always necessary. The FM+ 650 gives you 648Wh while reducing the weight underneath the board.
Downwind foiling
For riders using Foil Drive to achieve the first take-off, recover after touchdowns or motor back into position, reducing system weight can improve the feel of the board once the foil is flying freely.
Wing foiling
If Fusion is helping with light-wind starts and occasional recovery rather than providing continuous thrust, the FM+ 650 provides a useful middle ground between capacity and installed weight.
Flat-water and pump training
The 648Wh FM+ 650 still gives substantial capacity for repeated powered starts while keeping the overall package lighter than the Fusion 860 setup.
Long-range or sustained powered riding
If maximum runtime is the priority, keep the Fusion 860. The value of this adaptor is that you do not have to choose one battery philosophy permanently: Fusion can be configured differently for different sessions.

I bought my Fusion before September 2026. Do I need one?
If you now want to use an FM+ battery, yes. Earlier Fusion systems pre-date the FM+ battery release and therefore were not originally supplied with the adaptor.
Does the adaptor need tools to install?
No. It uses Foil Drive's integrated Quick Lock Tabs to provide a tool-free connection between the FM+ battery configuration and the Fusion.

Why would I use an FM+ 650 instead of the Fusion 860?
The FM+ 650 sacrifices some maximum capacity in return for lower battery weight and shorter dimensions. With the adaptor fitted, it gives Fusion riders a lighter configuration for sessions where board response and lower installed weight matter more than achieving the longest possible runtime.
How much lighter is the FM+ 650 setup?
The FM+ 650 battery weighs approximately 3.95kg compared with approximately 4.9kg for the Fusion 860. The adaptor itself adds around 100g, so there remains a useful overall weight saving at battery level.
Can I swap between the FM+ 650 and Fusion 860?
Yes. That flexibility is one of the main reasons the adaptor exists. You can configure Fusion around the larger battery when maximum runtime matters, then use an FM+ battery and adaptor for a lighter setup.
Is the adaptor compatible with the older Gen 2 Assist MAX?
No. The FM+ battery system belongs to Foil Drive's newer Gen 2.5 43V architecture. This adaptor does not convert an older Gen 2 MAX to use FM+ batteries.
Does the FM+ Battery Adaptor include a battery?
No. This product is the adaptor only. The compatible FM+ battery, Foil Drive Fusion and charger are sold separately unless specifically included as part of another package.
