AXIS Foil Setup Guide: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Setups Explained

AXIS foils are brilliant for progression, but only if the setup is built around the rider. A beginner setup, an intermediate wing setup and a more advanced wave or parawing setup should not all use the same front wing, rear wing and fuselage.

This guide explains sensible AXIS foil setup pathways for beginner, intermediate and intermediate-to-advanced riders. It is built around the current BLACK Advance+ system and the combinations we would use as practical starting points for real customers.

You can browse the full AXIS Foils collection at The SUP Company, or use this guide to understand the logic before you buy.

The simple AXIS setup rule

A good AXIS setup is about balance. You need the right front wing for lift and speed, the right rear wing for stability and feel, the right fuselage for pitch control and turning, and the right mast for your discipline and conditions.

For a beginner, the priority is control. For an intermediate rider, the priority is progression. For a more advanced rider, the priority is usually response, speed, glide or manoeuvrability.

Why The SUP Company approach matters

We see a lot of customers who have bought foil parts in isolation and then wonder why the setup feels hard work. AXIS is modular, but modular does not mean random.

At The SUP Company, we help riders choose setups based on weight, ability, board choice, wind strength, local water state and the discipline they actually want to ride. A setup that feels perfect for a light, advanced wave rider may be completely wrong for a heavier rider learning in gusty UK wind.

For suitable customers, our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington can also help with technical wing and foil kit decisions before committing to a full setup.

Important compatibility note

This guide focuses mainly on the BLACK Advance+ system because it is the most relevant route for the current AXIS setups discussed here.

BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link / Tempo are separate AXIS systems and are not interchangeable. Standard AXIS rear wings such as Progressive, Skinny and Surf Skinny fit BLACK Advance+ fuselages without an adapter. Ti-Link is a separate high-end Tempo platform.

Quick AXIS setup comparison

Rider level Front wing Rear wing Fuselage Best for
Beginner wingfoiler Spitfire 1100 / 1180 Progressive 425 / 450 Black Advance+ Short Early lift, stability and confidence
Intermediate wingfoiler Surge 950 / 1010 Progressive 375 / 400 Short or Ultrashort Progression, gybes, carving and more response
Intermediate / advanced wave or parawing rider Surge 890 Surf Skinny 300 / 45 Black Advance+ Ultrashort Committed turning, wave lines and parawing control

Beginner AXIS wing foil setup

For a beginner wing foiler, the setup should help you get up, stay up and learn with fewer nasty surprises.

This is not the time to chase the smallest wing or the loosest rear stabiliser. Early lift, pitch control and predictable handling matter far more.

Component Recommended direction Why it works
Front wing AXIS Spitfire 1100 / 1180 Stable early lift and a forgiving wing foil entry point
Rear wing Progressive 425 / 450 More lift, more stability and easier pitch control
Fuselage Black Advance+ Short Most stable feel and better control while learning
Mast AXIS 19mm Aluminium Mast around 82cm Durable, practical and a sensible value-led starting point

Choose this beginner setup if...

  • You are working on first flights or early sustained flights.
  • You want maximum confidence rather than top-end speed.
  • You ride in lighter wind or gusty UK conditions.
  • You want a setup that gives room to progress without feeling twitchy.

For heavier riders, lighter winds or smaller boards, leaning towards the larger end of the Spitfire and Progressive pairing may help. For lighter riders, the smaller end of the range may be enough.

Intermediate AXIS wing foil setup

Once you are flying both ways, starting to gybe and wanting more response, it usually makes sense to move towards a more lively front wing and a slightly smaller rear wing.

This is where the AXIS Surge range becomes very useful.

Component Recommended direction Why it works
Front wing AXIS Surge 950 / 1010 More connected, turn-focused and better for progression
Rear wing Progressive 375 / 400 Still controlled, but sharper and more responsive than larger sizes
Fuselage Short or Ultrashort Short for stability, Ultrashort for a looser and more manoeuvrable feel
Mast Aluminium 82cm or carbon upgrade Aluminium is practical; carbon adds stiffness and more direct feedback

Choose this intermediate setup if...

  • You can already ride comfortably on foil.
  • You are learning gybes, tacks or more committed turns.
  • You want more speed and reaction than your beginner setup.
  • You still want enough stability for real-world UK chop.

The big decision here is usually Short versus Ultrashort fuselage. If you want more pitch stability, stay with Short. If you want the foil to feel more alive and turn more tightly, Ultrashort is the logical progression.

Intermediate to advanced AXIS wave and parawing setup

For riders moving into wave-focused winging, SUP/prone surf foil or parawing, the setup can become more precise and more manoeuvrable.

This is where smaller Surge sizes, Surf Skinny rear wings and an Ultrashort fuselage start to make sense.

Component Recommended direction Why it works
Front wing AXIS Surge 890 Strong option for committed wave, parawing and tighter carving
Rear wing Surf Skinny 300 / 45 More precise, lower-drag and surf-focused feel
Fuselage Black Advance+ Ultrashort More manoeuvrability and tighter turning
Mast Aluminium 82cm or carbon depending on budget and performance needs Carbon becomes more useful as speed, leverage and rider demands increase

Choose this advanced progression setup if...

  • You are already comfortable managing pitch and flight height.
  • You want a looser foil for waves, parawing or more expressive turns.
  • You do not need maximum beginner stability.
  • You are ready for a more sensitive rear wing and shorter fuselage feel.

A Surf Skinny rear wing is not where we would normally start a beginner. It rewards better control and can feel more pitch-sensitive than a Progressive.

How rider weight changes the setup

Rider weight does not decide everything, but it does matter.

  • Heavier riders may need more front wing lift, a slightly larger rear wing or a more stable fuselage choice, especially in lighter wind.
  • Lighter riders may be able to use smaller front wings or smaller rear wings sooner.
  • Intermediate riders can often reduce rear wing size before changing the entire front wing.
  • Advanced riders may prioritise lower drag and manoeuvrability over easy lift.

Board size and wind strength also matter. A rider on a larger, easier board may get away with less foil than the same rider on a small sinker board.

Which component should you upgrade first?

What you want to improve Upgrade to consider Typical AXIS direction
More early lift Front wing More lift-focused Spitfire or PNG V2 size
More turning response Rear wing or fuselage Smaller Progressive, Surf Skinny or Ultrashort fuselage
More glide Front wing and rear wing PNG V2 or Fireball with Skinny rear wing
Less flex and more control Mast AXIS Carbon Power High Modulus Mast
More stability Rear wing or fuselage Larger Progressive or Short fuselage

Do not upgrade everything at once if you can avoid it. Changing one part at a time makes it easier to understand what has improved and what still needs work.

Best AXIS setup for UK wing foiling conditions

For UK wing foiling, particularly around the south coast, the best setup is often not the smallest or fastest setup. Gusts, lulls and messy water favour a foil that gets up early and remains controllable.

Beginners should prioritise easy lift and stability. Intermediates can reduce rear wing size and move towards Surge. Advanced riders can look more seriously at Surf Skinny rear wings, Ultrashort fuselages and carbon masts.

Try before you buy

If you are unsure whether to move from Spitfire to Surge, Short to Ultrashort, or Progressive to Surf Skinny, a proper demo conversation can save a lot of wasted spend.

The Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington is built around this sort of technical decision. It is designed for customers actively choosing their next wing, foil or foil assist setup and wanting expert guidance before buying.

FAQs

What is the best AXIS setup for a beginner wing foiler?

A good beginner direction is a larger AXIS Spitfire, Progressive 425 or 450 rear wing, Black Advance+ Short fuselage and an aluminium mast around 82cm. This gives early lift, stability and a more confidence-building feel.

When should I move from AXIS Spitfire to AXIS Surge?

Move towards Surge when you are already flying comfortably and want more response, tighter turns and a more connected feel. If you are still struggling with pitch control and take-offs, stay with the more forgiving setup for longer.

Should I use a Short or Ultrashort fuselage?

Use Short if you want stability and easier pitch control. Use Ultrashort if you are progressing and want a looser, more manoeuvrable foil. Most riders benefit from learning on Short before moving shorter.

Are AXIS rear wings interchangeable on BLACK Advance+?

Standard AXIS rear wings such as Progressive, Skinny and Surf Skinny fit BLACK Advance+ fuselages without an adapter. Ti-Link / Tempo is a separate system, so check compatibility if you are unsure.

Can The SUP Company help me choose a complete AXIS setup?

Yes. Tell us your weight, ability, board, local conditions and what you want to improve, and we can recommend a sensible AXIS setup or upgrade path.
