AXIS Surge vs Spitfire vs Fireball vs PNG V2: Which Front Wing Should You Choose?

Choosing an AXIS front wing can feel slightly daunting because the range is so modular. The good news is that once you understand what each wing family is trying to do, the decision becomes much clearer.

This guide compares four key AXIS front wing families: Surge, Spitfire, Fireball and PNG V2. These are the wings most customers ask us about when they are building or upgrading a wing, SUP, parawing, pump or downwind foil setup.

If you already know you want to browse the range, start with the full AXIS Foils collection at The SUP Company. If you are still weighing things up, this guide will help you choose the right direction before you buy.

Why the front wing matters

The front wing is the main engine of your foil. It creates most of the lift and has the biggest effect on early take-off, glide, top speed, turning feel and how forgiving the foil feels under your feet.

A larger, more lift-focused front wing will usually get going earlier and feel easier in lighter wind. A smaller or more performance-focused wing will generally feel faster, more reactive and more precise, but it will ask more from the rider.

With AXIS, the front wing choice also affects the best rear wing, fuselage and mast pairing. That is why we always look at the complete setup rather than selling a front wing in isolation.

Why buy AXIS advice from The SUP Company?

Foils are not just about numbers on a spec sheet. Two wings can have similar spans and feel completely different on the water.

At The SUP Company, we help customers choose AXIS kit for real UK conditions: gusty coastal wind, lighter summer sessions, Solent chop, flat-water practice, wave riding, parawing and early downwind progression.

For suitable customers, selected foil and wing kit can also be tested through our Try It Now service at The SUP Co x Lymington. That is particularly useful if you are choosing between two similar wings or deciding whether an upgrade will actually improve your riding.

Quick comparison: AXIS Surge vs Spitfire vs Fireball vs PNG V2

Front wing family Main feel Best suited to Choose this if...
AXIS Spitfire Stable, forgiving, surfy and easy to trust Beginner-friendly wing foiling, surfy progression, all-round use You want early lift, confidence and a forgiving first AXIS setup
AXIS Surge More lively, turn-focused and connected Wing, surf, SUP, parawing and tighter carving You are progressing and want more response without going too specialist
AXIS Fireball Fast, efficient and glide-focused SUP downwind, open-water glide, pump and higher-efficiency riding You want to cover more water with less effort and prioritise glide
AXIS PNG V2 Easy lift, strong pump and useful glide Light-wind winging, beginner downwind, dock starts, pump foiling You want low-speed lift, carry through lulls and pump-and-glide efficiency

Choose the AXIS Spitfire if you want the easiest entry point

The AXIS Spitfire Front Wing is the first place many riders should look if they want a confidence-building AXIS wing foil setup.

It is stable, forgiving and easy to trust, especially in the larger sizes. For beginner and early-intermediate wing foilers, the Spitfire 1100 or 1180 paired with a larger Progressive rear wing and a Black Advance+ Short fuselage makes a lot of sense.

Choose the AXIS Spitfire if:

  • You are learning or moving beyond your first flights.
  • You want early lift and calm handling rather than maximum speed.
  • You ride in lighter or gusty wind where easy take-off matters.
  • You want a front wing that still has room for progression.

Do not choose the Spitfire just because it sounds easier. If you are already carving hard, riding waves or moving into parawing, the Surge may be the better long-term option.

Choose the AXIS Surge if you want tighter turns and progression

The AXIS Surge Front Wing is the one to look at when your riding becomes more turn-focused. It has a more alive, connected feel than a pure pump-and-glide wing and suits riders who want tighter carving, wave lines and more back-foot response.

Surge 950 and 1010 are strong progression options for many intermediate wing foilers. Surge 890 is a very interesting choice for more committed wave and parawing riders, particularly with an Ultrashort fuselage and a Surf Skinny rear wing.

Choose the AXIS Surge if:

  • You are already flying comfortably and want more response.
  • You are working on tighter gybes, wave riding or more dynamic turns.
  • You want one front wing family to bridge wing, surf, SUP and parawing use.
  • You like a foil that feels lively but still has usable glide.

The Surge is not the obvious first choice for a complete beginner. It rewards better foil control and a more active riding style.

Choose the AXIS Fireball if glide and open-water efficiency matter most

The AXIS Fireball Front Wing sits on the high-aspect, glide-focused side of the AXIS range. It is aimed at riders who want speed, carry and efficiency rather than a loose surf-only feel.

For SUP downwind and open-water glide, the Fireball makes a lot of sense. It is also relevant for more advanced wing foilers who want to cover distance, link bumps and maintain speed with less effort.

Choose the AXIS Fireball if:

  • You want to move into SUP downwind or open-water foiling.
  • You are looking for glide, speed and long flight lines.
  • You are comfortable managing a more efficient, less beginner-focused foil.
  • You are prepared to pair it with the right rear wing and mast.

With Fireball, mast stiffness becomes more important. A stiffer carbon mast such as the AXIS Carbon Power High Modulus Mast can help reduce flex and make the setup feel more precise.

Choose the AXIS PNG V2 if you want low-speed lift and pump-and-glide performance

The AXIS PNG V2 Front Wing is the pump-and-glide option in this comparison. It suits riders who want easy lift, useful glide and a front wing that keeps carrying through weak conditions.

It works well for dock starts, pump foiling, light-wind winging, wake foiling, SUP foiling and beginner downwind-style riding where early lift and staying power matter more than top speed.

Choose the AXIS PNG V2 if:

  • You want easier lift in marginal conditions.
  • You are interested in dock starts, pump foiling or small downwind conditions.
  • You want a more forgiving glide wing rather than a sharp surf wing.
  • You are building a modern Black-series/BLACK Advance+ style AXIS setup.

If your priority is tight wave riding or more expressive turns, Surge is likely to feel more exciting. If your priority is pumping, early lift and staying on foil, PNG V2 is the more obvious choice.

Recommended AXIS front wing direction by rider type

Rider type Best starting point Why
First-time wing foiler Spitfire 1100 / 1180 Stable early lift and more forgiving control
Progressing wing foiler Surge 950 / 1010 More response, better carving and a clear step forward
Wave-focused wing rider Surge 890 / 950 Tighter, more connected feel through turns
Parawing rider Surge 890 Good balance of glide, carve and control once the wing is packed away
SUP downwind rider PNG V2 or Fireball PNG V2 for easier entry, Fireball for higher glide and efficiency
Pump / dock start rider PNG V2 Low-speed lift and efficient pump-and-glide feel

Compatibility note: BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link

Most riders comparing these front wings will be working around the BLACK Advance+ system. This is the main commercially relevant AXIS system for Surge, Fireball and PNG V2 style setups.

BLACK Advance+ and Ti-Link / Tempo are separate systems and are not interchangeable. Standard AXIS rear wings fit BLACK Advance+ fuselages without an adapter, but Ti-Link uses its own Tempo-specific connection.

If you are replacing part of an older AXIS setup, check compatibility carefully before buying. If you are unsure, send us a photo of your existing fuselage and front wing connection and we can help sanity-check it.

FAQs

Which AXIS front wing is best for beginner wing foiling?

For most beginner wing foilers, a larger AXIS Spitfire such as the 1100 or 1180 is the most sensible starting point. Pair it with a larger Progressive rear wing and a Black Advance+ Short fuselage for stability and early lift.

What is the main difference between AXIS Surge and Spitfire?

The Spitfire is the more forgiving, confidence-building option in larger sizes. The Surge is more lively, turn-focused and better suited to progressing riders, wave riding and parawing.

Is AXIS Fireball better than PNG V2?

Not automatically. Fireball is better if you want high-aspect glide, speed and downwind efficiency. PNG V2 is better if you want low-speed lift, pump-and-glide performance and easier use in lighter conditions.

Can I use these front wings with any AXIS fuselage?

No. Compatibility matters. The current Surge, Fireball and PNG V2 direction is based around the BLACK Advance+ / Black-series style system. Ti-Link and Tempo are separate and are not interchangeable with BLACK Advance+ components.

Should heavier riders choose a bigger AXIS front wing?

Often, yes, especially for learning, light wind or early lift. But ability, board size, local conditions and riding style matter too, so it is worth getting specific advice before buying.

Final advice

Choose the AXIS Spitfire if you want a forgiving wing foil entry point. Choose the AXIS Surge if you are progressing towards tighter turns, waves or parawing. Choose the AXIS Fireball if you want glide and open-water efficiency. Choose the AXIS PNG V2 if you want low-speed lift, pump and easy glide.

For the best result, do not choose the front wing alone. Build the whole setup around your ability, weight, local conditions and where you want your riding to go next. Browse the AXIS Foils range or speak to The SUP Company team for tailored setup advice.
