The Duotone Pop D/LAB is not another all-round foil with a slightly different shape.
It exists for a very specific reason.
The Pop D/LAB is Duotone's dedicated freestyle foil, built to carry speed into a trick, release explosively, repop after a landing and remain predictable when the rider is loading the foil hard.
That makes it one of the most specialised front wings in the 2027 Duotone range.
It also means that a lot of riders should probably buy something else.
If you want surf flow, carving and broader crossover, look at the Duotone Carve 3.0 D/LAB. If you want high-aspect glide, look at Glide 3.0. If you want an agile, forgiving crossover front wing, Crest SLS deserves attention.
If your priority is tricks, speed into take-off, pop and controlled landings, Pop is where the conversation changes.

Quick answer: who should buy the Duotone Pop D/LAB?
Choose Pop D/LAB if freestyle or kite foiling is the main purpose of your setup and you already foil at a good level.
Do not choose it as your first foil simply because it is D/LAB or because the professional team rides it.

What makes Pop different?
Most foil design involves compromise.
A front wing that pumps brilliantly may not be the one that turns most aggressively.
A foil that lifts very early can create too much drag once you are going fast.
A highly manoeuvrable surf foil may feel less locked when approaching a trick at speed.
Pop deliberately removes some of those compromises.
Its low-to-medium aspect ratio and low-drag profile are designed to let the rider accelerate hard while retaining consistent front-foot pressure.
That gives the rider a more predictable platform during the moments that matter in freestyle:
- approaching the trick;
- loading the foil;
- releasing from the water;
- landing;
- repop after touchdown.
Why does “locked-in” matter for freestyle?
In wave riding, a foil that feels loose and eager to roll can be brilliant.
In freestyle, that same looseness can become a problem.
When you are travelling quickly into a trick, you want to know where the foil will be when you load it.
You do not want unexpected pitch or roll movements just as you are trying to convert speed into height.
Pop gives up some of the flowing carve character of a Carve 3.0 in exchange for more stability and predictability.
That is why “locked-in” is a positive description here.
Why speed matters before a freestyle trick
Pop is designed to run fast.
Speed gives you energy.
The more efficiently the foil carries that speed into the take-off, the more energy you can convert into vertical lift and rotation.
The front wing therefore needs enough lift to support the rider without producing excessive drag as speed increases.
This is also why buying the largest Pop simply because you are nervous about take-off is not necessarily the right answer. The complete concept is based around speed.
Duotone Pop D/LAB 500
The 500 is the smallest Pop.
It is aimed at light riders, younger high-level riders and highly powered conditions where minimum foil area and maximum speed are valuable.
Choose the 500 if:
- you are a light but experienced rider;
- you ride heavily powered;
- you have strong pumping and take-off technique;
- minimum drag matters more than low-speed support;
- you already know why a 500cm² foil makes sense for you.
If you are wondering whether 500cm² will be enough for your first serious foil, the answer is almost certainly that you should be looking elsewhere.
Duotone Pop D/LAB 650
The 650 is the reference size within the range.
Duotone describes it as the go-to choice among its top freestyle riders during development.
That does not mean it is automatically the right size for every customer, but it tells you where the design's sweet spot sits.
Choose the 650 if:
- you are a strong freestyle rider;
- you can generate speed reliably;
- you want the core Pop feel;
- your priority is height, pop and repeatable landings;
- you are building a dedicated rather than multipurpose setup.
Duotone Pop D/LAB 800
The 800 adds useful lift without changing the reason Pop exists.
This makes it the more sensible option for:
- heavier riders;
- lighter wind;
- riders wanting more low-speed support;
- freestylers who still want the Pop character without dropping immediately to 650cm².
If you want Pop's freestyle behaviour but are concerned about making the setup unnecessarily demanding, the 800 is often the first size worth discussing.
Is the Pop D/LAB suitable for heavier riders?
Yes, particularly in the 800.
But weight is only one part of the decision.
A technically strong heavier rider can use surprisingly small foils because they can accelerate the board cleanly and keep the foil loaded at speed.
A less experienced rider of the same weight may need far more area.
Board shape also matters. A longer, efficient foil board can reach take-off speed more easily than a short, wide board, which may allow the rider to use less front-wing area.
Send us your bodyweight, board and normal wind rather than choosing from bodyweight alone.
What tail does the Pop D/LAB use?
This is one of the clearest parts of the setup.
Pop has been developed around the new Monobloc Tail F165.
The F165 uses a compact 37cm tail length and has been tuned for:
- pitch stability;
- speed;
- pop;
- controlled landings;
- freestyle and kite foil use.
This is not simply an existing surf tail paired with a new front wing.
The front and rear have been developed as a freestyle system.

What is 3BS+ and why does Pop use a fourth screw?
The latest Duotone performance direction introduces 3BS+.
In simple terms, compatible 3BS+ setups add a fourth fixing point to increase security and control through the connection.
That matters on Pop because freestyle generates large, abrupt loads.
Take-offs, hard landings and repeated tricks put very different forces into a foil than simply cruising in a straight line.
Pop and the F165 tail therefore need to be treated as a complete compatible system rather than assuming that any old Duotone mast or fuselage will simply bolt together.
Which mast should you use?
The new Duotone Mast SLS 2.0 is a particularly logical route.
It uses the newer 3BS+ connection direction and is available in 76, 84 and 92cm.
For freestyle winging, the 84cm is likely to be the central all-round mast conversation for many riders because it provides useful clearance without becoming excessively tall.
The correct mast still depends on water depth, rider size, board and whether your emphasis is wing or kite.

This is the comparison most riders should make before buying.

Choose Pop if freestyle performance is the reason you are changing foil.
Choose Carve if you still want the foil to flow through waves and turns.

Can you normal wingfoil the Pop D/LAB?
Yes.
It can be extremely fast and exciting for flat-water winging.
But the fact that something can freeride does not make it the sensible all-round recommendation.
For normal UK freeriding, we would generally look at Crest or Glide before Pop.
Pop earns its place when you are actually going to use the freestyle benefits you are paying for.
Is Pop good for waves?
It will foil in waves, but this misses the point of the design.
Carve 3.0 is the obvious choice if wave flow and carving are central.
Crest also offers a more surf-orientated crossover direction.
Pop feels most at home when you are using speed and control to generate aerial manoeuvres rather than trying to make the foil disappear beneath you while surfing.
Is Pop good for Foil Assist?
It is not our default Foil Assist recommendation.
Foil Assist often benefits from efficient lift, glide and predictable starts.
Crest, Glide and other front wings can make considerably more sense depending on whether you are surf foiling, downwinding or winging.
The exception is an advanced rider specifically using Foil Assist to access a freestyle or very fast small-foil setup.
Is Pop D/LAB suitable for beginners?
No – not as a normal first foil.
Its small sizes, speed-focused profile and specialist nature all assume existing foil control.
A beginner will progress faster on a foil designed to lift earlier, stall more gently and tolerate mistakes.

Front wing or complete wing set?
Buy the individual front wing if you already own the correct compatible mast, connection and tail.
For customers building a new Pop system, a matched wing-set direction can make more sense because it removes some of the guesswork around front-wing and tail pairing.
