Duotone Foil Tails Explained: S vs PX vs H vs Monobloc

Changing the rear of your foil can make a surprisingly big difference.

Most riders naturally concentrate on the front wing. It creates most of the lift, its size is printed prominently on the product and it is normally the first component you think about changing.

But the rear stabiliser and tail determine a huge amount of what you actually feel through your feet: pitch stability, turning freedom, pumping efficiency, speed, front-foot pressure and how quickly the foil reacts when you move.

The current Duotone range makes that choice more interesting – but also slightly more complicated – because you now have S, PX and H stabiliser families alongside S, PX, H and F Monobloc tails.

There is one important point to understand immediately:

Monobloc is not a fourth riding style alongside S, PX and H. It is a different construction and tail system. A Monobloc S, PX or H still has the basic riding character of that family, but integrates the tail section and stabiliser into one carbon component.

This guide explains the difference in plain English and helps you choose the right Duotone tail for wing foiling, waves, parawing, downwind, Foil Assist and freestyle.

What does the rear stabiliser actually do?

The front wing creates the majority of lift, but it does not work in isolation.

The rear stabiliser helps control the foil around its pitch axis – effectively how easily the nose wants to rise or fall.

Change the rear wing and you change the balance of the complete foil.

A different tail can alter:

  • how stable the foil feels at low speed;
  • how much front-foot pressure you feel;
  • how tightly it turns;
  • how easily it pumps;
  • how much speed it will comfortably carry;
  • how quickly it responds to rider input;
  • how forgiving it feels after a touchdown or poor take-off.

This is why two riders using the same front wing can describe their foils very differently if the rear setup is not the same.

Duotone S Stabiliser: best for a loose, surfy feel

The S stabiliser is Duotone's surf-orientated direction.

It uses very little sweep and a slight dihedral to give the foil a more playful, loose feel through turns.

It is available in 145, 165, 185 and 210cm² sizes, giving riders useful scope to balance front-wing size and desired support.

Choose the S stabiliser if:

  • you spend a lot of time riding waves or swell;
  • you want the foil to roll easily from rail to rail;
  • you prone foil;
  • you freefly with the wing flagged;
  • you value manoeuvrability more than locked-in straight-line tracking;
  • you want good low-speed pumping without making the foil feel overly directional.

The S family makes particularly good sense when the wave itself is the main event.

If your complaint about your current foil is that it feels as though it wants to continue in a straight line while you are trying to redirect it, this is the sort of rear-wing direction we would investigate.

Duotone PX Stabiliser: best all-round performance choice

The Duotone PX stabiliser is the more speed and performance-orientated all-round option.

The current PX 160, 175 and 195 replace the older P165, P180 and P200 direction.

Duotone has refined the twist through the stabiliser to improve pitch control, manoeuvrability and pumping while slightly reducing front-foot pressure compared with the older P series.

Choose PX if:

  • you wingfoil powered;
  • you want speed without giving away too much turning ability;
  • you ride Carve or Crest-style front wings;
  • you use Foil Assist;
  • you want a rear stabiliser that works across several disciplines;
  • you prefer a more connected, controlled feel than the loosest surf setup.

If somebody asks us for one performance-orientated rear stabiliser without a highly specialist brief, PX is normally one of the first families we discuss.

What is PX OG?

This is worth separating because the naming can be confusing.

The Duotone PX OG 225 and 260 are the larger, progression-orientated rear wings.

They are aimed much more towards stability and control than the smaller high-performance PX 160, 175 and 195.

That makes PX OG relevant to larger progression front wings and setups such as Free and Lift where easy low-speed behaviour is more important than maximum top-end speed.

Choose PX OG if you are building a confidence-led foil. Choose the smaller PX range when you are deliberately moving towards more speed and responsiveness.

Duotone H Stabiliser: best for glide and pumping

The Duotone H stabiliser takes the opposite route to the surfier S.

The H is high aspect, straight and efficiency driven.

Its job is to minimise drag, preserve energy and project the foil forwards.

Choose H if:

  • you downwind foil;
  • you parawing;
  • you pump between bumps;
  • you want maximum glide from a Glide-style front wing;
  • you freefly long sections;
  • you care more about covering distance efficiently than making the tightest possible turn.

The H family runs from relatively small performance sizes through to larger options and is particularly useful because it gives riders a screw-on way into Duotone's glide-focused tail feel before moving to a premium Monobloc system.

S vs PX vs H: the simplest way to understand it

Think about what you want the foil to do once it is flying.

S = turn.

PX = speed and control.

H = glide.

That is deliberately simplified, because all three can turn, pump and carry speed.

But it is a much more useful starting point than comparing square centimetres alone.

What is a Duotone Monobloc tail?

A conventional Duotone setup normally has a separate fuselage or frontpiece, tail section and screw-on rear stabiliser.

A Monobloc combines the rear tail section and stabiliser into a single carbon component.

This reduces separate junctions and hardware and is designed to create:

  • lower drag;
  • greater stiffness;
  • more direct power transfer;
  • cleaner water flow;
  • a very connected foil feel.

That is why Monobloc should be viewed as a premium system architecture, not one specific rear-wing personality.

Monobloc Tail S D/LAB

The Duotone Monobloc Tail S D/LAB is the premium surf and swell direction.

It is aimed at riders who want fluid turns, good pumping and low drag rather than the straight-line efficiency of the H or the higher-speed character of PX.

Choose Monobloc S for:

  • prone foiling;
  • swell riding;
  • wave-focused winging;
  • freefly;
  • premium surf-oriented D/LAB builds.

Monobloc Tail PX D/LAB

The Duotone Monobloc Tail PX D/LAB is the faster premium direction.

It is particularly relevant to Carve 3.0 D/LAB, Crest D/LAB-style configurations and Glide D/LAB setups where speed, low drag and positive control matter.

An important point with Monobloc sizing is that you should not assume you need the same stabiliser area as a conventional screw-on rear wing.

For example, Duotone describes the PX160 Monobloc as being able to provide comparable lift to a larger conventional PX175 while adding agility and reducing drag.

Do not size a Monobloc purely by matching the number on your old stabiliser.

Monobloc Tail H D/LAB: new glide-focused option

The new Duotone Monobloc Tail H D/LAB brings the high-aspect H concept into the integrated D/LAB tail system.

It is available as:

  • H150 with a 40cm tail length – more lift and support for larger foils;
  • H130 with a 43cm tail length – tuned towards smaller, faster front wings and maximum glide efficiency.

Its strongest applications are:

  • Glide 3.0 D/LAB;
  • downwind;
  • parawing;
  • freefly;
  • pump foiling;
  • riders trying to connect low-energy bumps with less effort.

If outright top speed is the priority, PX remains the more obvious direction.

If you want the foil to retain energy and continue flying, H is the more logical choice.

Monobloc Tail F165: the freestyle specialist

The new Monobloc Tail F D/LAB 165 is different again.

It uses a compact 37cm tail length and has been developed around the new Pop D/LAB front wing.

Its purpose is maximum pitch stability, strong control at speed, pop and controlled landings rather than all-round freeride versatility.

Choose F165 when you are building a Pop D/LAB freestyle or kite foil. Do not choose it simply because it is the newest or shortest tail.

Does a smaller rear stabiliser make a foil faster?

Often, but it is not as simple as “smaller equals better”.

A smaller rear wing generally creates less drag and can make the foil feel:

  • faster;
  • looser;
  • more responsive;
  • less supported at low speed;
  • more sensitive to pitch input.

A larger stabiliser generally gives:

  • more pitch support;
  • more low-speed confidence;
  • a calmer ride;
  • easier progression;
  • more margin when technique is imperfect.

The correct answer is the smallest tail that still gives you the control you need for your front wing, bodyweight and discipline – not simply the smallest tail available.

Does tail length matter as well as stabiliser area?

Absolutely.

A longer tail increases the leverage between the front and rear wing and generally creates a calmer, more pitch-stable foil.

A shorter tail makes pitch response quicker and the foil more agile.

This is why comparing only 150cm² versus 160cm² can be misleading.

Tail length, aspect ratio, section and front-wing pairing all contribute to the result.

Which tail should I use with Crest SLS?

Crest is a good example of how much tail choice can change one front wing.

Choose S if you want to push Crest towards surf, prone and playful freefly.

Choose PX if you want a faster, more controlled wingfoil or Foil Assist setup.

Choose H if pumping and glide become more important.

Which tail should I use with Glide 3.0?

For Glide 3.0 the decision normally comes down to how heavily you value pure efficiency.

H is the natural choice for downwind, pumping, parawing and long freefly sections.

PX makes sense when you want to run the Glide faster under a powered wing and retain a more positive rear-end feel.

Glide 3.0 D/LAB with the new Monobloc H is the premium pump-and-glide route.

Which tail should I use with Pop D/LAB?

This one is much simpler.

Use the dedicated Monobloc F165 direction.

Pop D/LAB and F165 have been developed together around speed into tricks, pitch stability, explosive pop and controlled landings.

The system also uses Duotone's newer 3BS+ fourth-fixing direction, so compatibility should be checked as a complete build.

Which tail is best for a beginner?

Most beginners do not need a Monobloc.

A stable screw-on rear wing is easier to tune, generally represents better value and gives more flexibility while you work out what you actually want from the foil.

Larger PX OG options are particularly relevant to progression setups.

Spend money on correct foil sizing before chasing the lowest-drag tail available.

Is Monobloc worth the extra money?

For an experienced rider who can feel mast flex, tail drag and small changes in pumping efficiency, yes, it can be.

For a new foiler, it is rarely the first upgrade we would recommend.

Choose Monobloc when:

  • you already know the tail character you prefer;
  • you want a cleaner premium D/LAB-style system;
  • lower drag and better energy transfer matter;
  • you are prepared to sacrifice some modularity for performance.

Stay with a conventional stabiliser if:

  • you are still progressing;
  • you regularly experiment with rear-wing sizes;
  • value matters;
  • you want the easiest way to tune one foil across several uses.

Compatibility matters more than the name

Do not order a tail simply because both products say SLS or D/LAB.

The current Duotone system includes 3BS, newer 3BS+ connections, conventional fuselages, Frontpiece AL 3BS and integrated Monobloc tails.

The correct front wing, mast, frontpiece and tail all need to work together.
