E-Foiling Is Growing Up: Why Foil Assist Is the Bigger Story

Electric foiling is no longer one single kind of riding. For some people, it means a fully powered board that carries them across flat water. For many experienced foilers, the more interesting development is a compact electric assist that helps them get onto the foil, reach a wave or link a downwind run, then lets them switch the motor off and ride the foil naturally.

That distinction matters when you are choosing between a dedicated eFoil, a foil-assist system or a newer integrated mast. At The SUP Company, we are seeing more customers ask how to add useful power to the foil equipment they already ride, rather than replace the whole experience with continuous motor propulsion.

What is changing in electric foiling?

Early electric-foil conversations often began and ended with the eFoil: battery, motor and board working together to provide continuous propulsion. That remains a great option for flatwater cruising and learning, but it is not the only route into powered foiling now.

Foil-assist systems are built around a conventional foil setup. The motor gives a short burst to help with a take-off, a return to the peak or a light-wind start. Once the rider is flying, the motor can be switched off and the propeller folds or stops, leaving the rider to surf, pump, wing or glide.

That makes foil assist especially appealing to people who already know how they want a foil to feel. They can keep the sport's core skills and sensations, while opening up sessions that might otherwise be limited by a weak breeze, a long paddle-out or a difficult take-off.

E-Foil or foil assist: which experience are you looking for?

Setup How it feels Best suited to
Dedicated eFoil Motor provides propulsion for most or all of the ride. Flatwater cruising, learning to foil and riding when wind or swell is absent.
Foil assist Motor helps with starts or repositioning; the rider switches it off to foil freely. Surf, wing, wake and downwind foiling, where keeping the natural foil ride is the point.
Hybrid assist/eFoil system Can be configured for assistance or more sustained powered riding, depending on the system and setup. Riders who value flexibility and want to develop across different types of electric foiling.

The main difference is how much of the session you expect the motor to do. If you want to cruise continuously, choose a setup designed for that. If you want help getting to the part where the foil takes over, prioritise assist, weight, drag, battery placement and compatibility with your existing board and foil.

Foil Drive MAX+: a modern all-round foil assist

Foil Drive MAX+ brings the Gen 2.5 system into a compact all-round package. It suits riders looking for meaningful take-off assistance across disciplines without automatically stepping up to the larger Fusion system. Your board, foil choice, rider weight and riding style still matter: a high-drag or undersized foil can ask more of any motor system.

For a first new Foil Drive build, start by deciding whether you want a light burst of help or expect the motor to provide sustained thrust for a significant part of the session. Then match the battery and motor configuration to that use. Our MAX+ versus Fusion comparison explains the practical trade-offs in more detail.

Foil Drive Fusion: more power and a wider range of use

The Foil Drive Fusion is the more power- and runtime-focused option in the Gen 2.5 range. Its hybrid character is useful for riders who want a strong foil assist, longer powered use or the flexibility to configure the system closer to an eFoil experience. It can make particular sense for heavier riders, smaller boards or sessions where extra thrust and battery capacity are useful.

Fusion's flexibility does not remove the need to choose the right setup. Motor position, battery, board, foil and intended use all change the feel and runtime. A specialist can help you work out whether Fusion's extra capability will be useful in your sessions or simply add weight and cost you do not need.

Duotone Foil Assist and Foil Cruise: two different jobs

The Duotone range makes the distinction between assist and continuous cruising particularly clear. Duotone Foil Assist is for riders who want electric help to get going, then want to ride their foil with the motor off. The modular mast and adapter routes can also allow some riders to keep compatible foil components they already own, although compatibility must be checked carefully.

The Duotone Foil Cruise Set AL is the more cruising-focused choice. Its 80cm aluminium mast is intended for flatwater cruising and foiling in swell, and its motor sits low on the mast. Duotone positions the Cruise for sustained electric propulsion and accessible progression. It is therefore useful to distinguish the Cruise from the surf-, wing- and downwind-oriented Foil Assist mast options when deciding what sort of riding you want.

Duotone Foil Cruise is designed for powered cruising and progression on flat water and small swell.

If you ride an existing foil system, read our Duotone Foil Assist compatibility guide before choosing a mast or adapter. Brand names alone are not enough: fuselage generation and connection type matter.

Why lower motor positions and integrated masts matter

One of the most noticeable equipment developments is the move towards integrated masts with the motor mounted lower down, closer to the fuselage. That puts the propeller in the water for powered riding and can create a cleaner, more purpose-built arrangement than a retrofit pod and exposed cable. The actual feel depends on the complete setup, including the foil, board, motor, battery and rider.

The AXIS Power Carbon FATTY Integrated E-Foil Mast 800mm is a good example. Its low motor position is paired with an internally routed cable and AXIS's stiffer FATTY mast platform, designed for the higher loads of powered foiling. The 800mm mast connects to AXIS FATTY fuselages only; it is not a direct fit for standard AXIS Black or Red fuselages. The mast includes the cable and protective cover, while the Foil Drive unit and motor are separate.

The AXIS Power Carbon FATTY Integrated E-Foil Mast places the motor lower on the mast and routes the power cable internally.

An integrated mast is most compelling if you foil regularly, know the system you want and value a clean, efficient build. A universal motor pod can be more adaptable if you want to move the assist between compatible masts or are still deciding on your final setup. Integrated motor positions are fixed, so check that the mast, motor and Foil Drive generation match before ordering.

The same principle appears across other systems: integrated does not mean universal. Confirm mast-to-fuselage fit, motor compatibility, cable requirements, board track position and whether the product listing includes the motor or only the mast.

Which route makes sense for you?

  • Choose a dedicated eFoil if you mainly want to cruise under continuous power on flat water or learn with motor propulsion throughout the ride.
  • Choose Foil Drive MAX+ if you want a versatile, modern assist for take-offs and a range of foiling disciplines, with a compact system.
  • Choose Foil Drive Fusion if you expect to use more power, longer powered runs or want the option to move between assist riding and more sustained propulsion.
  • Choose Duotone Foil Assist if you want electric help for surf, wing, wake or downwind sessions and want to explore a mast-based system with compatibility options for selected existing foils.
  • Choose Duotone Foil Cruise if relaxed powered cruising, flatwater progression and small-swell riding are more important than switching the motor off for most of the session.
  • Consider an integrated AXIS mast if you are building around compatible AXIS FATTY fuselages and want a stiff, internally cabled, lower-motor-position setup.

These are starting points rather than weight-based rules. A rider's experience, board volume and length, foil efficiency, local conditions and the length of the powered sections all change the best choice.

Think about UK conditions and your whole setup

UK sessions often mean working with a tide, wind shifts, short weather windows and a launch that is not directly beside the wave or downwind run. Assist can make more of those sessions workable, but it does not replace sound judgement, local knowledge or appropriate safety equipment. Battery range also varies with rider weight, board and foil efficiency, throttle use, water conditions and temperature.

Before buying, check the foil tracks and strength of your board, foil and fuselage compatibility, battery and motor generation, cable length, propeller setup, and how you will transport and charge the system. For an integrated mast, check the fixed motor position against your riding discipline and confirm exactly what is included in the package.

Electric foiling and foil-assist FAQs

What is the difference between an eFoil and foil assist?

An eFoil is designed to provide powered propulsion for most or all of the ride. A foil-assist system gives you a burst of power to help with a start or repositioning, then you switch it off and ride the foil using a wave, wing, wake or your own pumping.

Can Foil Drive Fusion be used as an eFoil?

Fusion can be configured for more sustained powered riding as well as foil-assist use. The exact experience depends on the motor position, battery, board and foil configuration. Check the current setup requirements before buying.

Is MAX+ or Fusion better for a first Foil Drive?

MAX+ is a strong all-round starting point for riders who primarily want foil assist. Fusion suits riders who need more power, runtime or eFoil-style flexibility. Rider weight is only one factor; board efficiency, foil size and how long you use the motor matter too.

Is Duotone Foil Cruise the same as Duotone Foil Assist?

They are related electric mast systems with different intended uses. Foil Assist is designed to provide temporary help for disciplines such as surf, wing and downwind foiling. Foil Cruise is designed for more continuous powered cruising, flatwater progression and riding small swell.

What is the benefit of an integrated foil-assist mast?

An integrated mast can route the power cable internally and position the motor as part of the mast design, which reduces external hardware and can make a cleaner, lower-drag setup. The motor position is fixed, and the mast is usually designed for a specific foil connection, so compatibility needs checking.

Will the AXIS Power Carbon FATTY Integrated Mast fit any AXIS foil?

No. This 800mm mast is for compatible AXIS FATTY fuselages. It does not connect directly to standard AXIS Black or Red fuselages. Confirm the fuselage and Foil Drive system requirements before ordering.

Can I try foil assist before buying?

Selected foil-assist equipment may be available through Try It Now at The SUP Co x Lymington. Demos depend on suitable conditions, rider experience, equipment availability and team approval. Contact the team to check the current options.

How long will a foil-assist battery last?

There is no single runtime figure that applies to every rider. Battery choice, rider weight, board and foil efficiency, throttle use, water conditions and temperature all affect how long a system runs. We recommend choosing around how you plan to use the motor and checking manufacturer guidance for your exact configuration.
