The AXIS Surge Front Wing is the surf-focused performance wing in the modern AXIS foil range, built for riders who want the foil to turn, accelerate and react more like a surfboard without giving away the glide and pumping efficiency that make a foil genuinely useful in everyday conditions.

What makes Surge particularly interesting is its range. The family now runs from the compact 740 right through to the latest 1240, covering everything from fast prone, tow and powered wing sessions through to parawing, Foil Drive, light-wind winging, SUP foiling and downwind. AXIS progressively increases the aspect ratio as the Surge gets larger, so the 1080, 1150 and especially the 1240 gain considerable glide and low-speed ability without simply becoming oversized, slow-turning surf wings.

If you already ride AXIS and want a front wing that feels more alive underfoot, Surge deserves serious consideration. It sits between the more forgiving all-round character of wings such as the AXIS Spitfire and the longer-glide, downwind-focused efficiency of the AXIS Fireball. The emphasis is on surf feel, back-foot drive, predictable rail-to-rail control and a very wide usable speed range.

Why choose the AXIS Surge?

AXIS Surge sizes explained

One important point when choosing a Surge is that the model number refers to the wingspan in millimetres, not its surface area. This matters because a Surge 1150, for example, is not an 1,150 cm² foil.

The complete Surge range is 740, 780, 830, 890, 950, 1010, 1080, 1150 and 1240. The character also changes slightly as you move through the family: the original smaller sizes sit around a 9.5 aspect ratio, while AXIS progressively stretches the larger wings to improve pumping and glide.

Which AXIS Surge size should I choose?

There is no single rider-weight chart that will choose a foil correctly on its own. Your board length and volume, discipline, local conditions, rear wing and ability are just as important. As a practical starting point:

• 740–830: performance end of the range. Think speed, more powerful waves, stronger wind, tow, kite and experienced riders wanting minimum wing beneath their feet.
• 890–950: the heart of the surf and wing range. A good place to look if you want Surge handling without going extremely small.
• 1010: adds useful lift and pump while retaining the classic Surge 9.5-ish aspect ratio and surf-driven character.
• 1080: the first significant step towards greater glide efficiency. Particularly interesting for parawing, Foil Drive, light-wind winging and more playful open-water riding.
• 1150: for riders wanting noticeably greater low-speed range, pumping and glide but who still want to carve rather than simply travel in a straight line.
• 1240: the big-wing Surge. Choose this when easy starts, low-speed support and longer connections matter, but you still want a foil that can be rolled over and surfed properly.

The Surge 1080, 1150 and 1240 change the range significantly

The larger Surge wings should not be thought of as simple scaled-up versions of the 740–1010. AXIS progressively increases aspect ratio as the range gets bigger: from around 9.5 through the original sizes to 10.22 on the 1080, 11.04 on the 1150 and 11.48 on the 1240.

That is an important design choice. Increasing span and aspect ratio improves glide and pumping efficiency, while the Surge outline and surf-focused tuning aim to preserve a manageable roll rate and connected feel. The result is that the larger models have genuine crossover into downwind, SUP foil, parawing and light-wind use rather than feeling like oversized versions of a small-wave surf foil.

AXIS Surge 1240 – the big-wing option

The Surge 1240 is the latest addition and considerably expands what we would use the Surge family for. At 1,340 cm² with an 11.48 aspect ratio, it delivers substantially more low-end lift and a slower, more relaxed pumping cadence while still retaining the ability to roll onto rail and turn.

This makes the 1240 particularly interesting for SUP foiling, downwind, dock starting, parawing, light-wind winging and riders who need more foil underneath them. It can carry speed through flatter sections and recover from lower speeds more comfortably than the smaller Surges.

It also occupies an interesting place within the AXIS range. Compared with the Spitfire 1180, the Surge 1240 brings substantially more glide, pumping ability and low-speed lift while feeling much more controlled in roll than you might expect from its span. Compared with a similar big Fireball, the Surge prioritises easier turning and a more surf-oriented feel. Compared with the PNG V2 1300, Surge feels faster and considerably more dynamic rail-to-rail.

Where does Surge sit in the AXIS range?

The increasingly large AXIS front wing range makes it important to buy according to the way you want the foil to feel, rather than simply comparing surface area.

• Choose Surge if wave riding, carving, rail-to-rail response and back-foot drive are priorities, but you still want good pumping and glide.
• Choose Spitfire if you favour a forgiving, predictable surf and freeride feel and want something especially confidence inspiring.
• Choose PNG V2 if low-speed lift, flat-water pumping, dock starting and easy glide are more important than aggressive surf turns.
• Choose Fireball if downwind speed, long-distance glide and open-water efficiency matter more than tight surf-style turning.

Who is the AXIS Surge best for?

We see Surge primarily as an intermediate-to-advanced foil family, although the 1150 and 1240 considerably broaden its accessibility. It particularly suits riders who already understand pitch control and are now looking for more expression from the foil.

• Prone surf foilers: for tighter lines, back-foot drive, tip breaches and carrying speed through flatter sections.
• Wingfoilers: a strong choice for riders who surf their wing foil, jump or want faster transitions rather than simply cruising.
• Parawingers: the mixture of low-end lift, glide, upwind efficiency and downwind manoeuvrability makes Surge especially relevant.
• Foil Drive riders: ideal if the motor is there to get you onto waves but you still want the foil itself to feel lively once surfing.
• SUP foilers: 1080, 1150 and 1240 give the range much more relevance for paddle-up and open-water riding.
• Downwind riders: particularly the larger sizes if you value turning and surf feel more than outright race-style glide.
• Tow and kite foilers: the smaller sizes offer the speed and compact manoeuvrability these disciplines demand.

Who might be better with another AXIS wing?

If you are buying your very first foil, we would normally prioritise predictable lift and stability over the extra responsiveness of a smaller Surge. The larger Surge models are much more accessible, but the correct setup still matters.

Similarly, if your overriding objective is flat-water pumping or getting the maximum flight time from very little energy, look closely at the AXIS PNG V2. For long-distance downwind riding and maximum glide at speed, compare Surge with the AXIS Fireball.

Recommended AXIS setup

Surge is a Black Series front wing. For most modern builds we would look towards an AXIS Advance+ B-Series Fuselage, with fuselage length selected according to how loose or stable you want the complete foil to feel.

The natural rear-wing partner is the AXIS Skinny Surf Rear Wing. It complements the Surge particularly well because it adds speed and flow without taking away the yaw control and surf-driven turning character that make the front wing appealing in the first place.
