New AXIS Black Aluminium Foil System: The Everyday AXIS Mast Gets a Major Update
It feels as though the AXIS aluminium mast system has been around since the dawn of foiling – and, in practical terms, it pretty much has.

That longevity is not a bad thing. The familiar AXIS 19mm aluminium mast has built its reputation by being stiff, dependable, relatively affordable and incredibly versatile. It has carried riders from their first flights through wing foiling, prone, SUP foil, downwind, dock starts and increasingly foil assist.
So rather than throwing away something that already worked, AXIS has taken a much more sensible approach for 2026 and beyond.
The mast profile itself remains largely unchanged. The big development is around it: a completely revised Black Aluminium system with a new base plate, redesigned Doodad connections, a new FATTY Doodad option and some clever improvements to stiffness, load distribution and foil-assist integration.
For a lot of riders, this is likely to become the everyday AXIS mast system.

AXIS Black Aluminium: what has actually changed?
The easiest way to understand the new system is that AXIS has kept the proven 19mm mast extrusion and concentrated its engineering effort on the areas where the mast connects to the board and fuselage.
| Component | What has changed? | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 19mm aluminium mast | Black anodised finish, new base connection details and cross-bolt provision | Keeps the familiar AXIS mast feel while integrating with the new base plate |
| Base plate | Completely redesigned with tapered mast pocket and cross-stabilising bolt | Stronger, stiffer and more precise mast-to-board connection |
| Standard Doodad | New support legs and redesigned fairing | Improved lateral stiffness, load distribution and water flow |
| FATTY Doodad | New dedicated aluminium mast adapter | Allows the 19mm aluminium mast to be used with AXIS FATTY fuselages |
The new AXIS Black Doodad
The Doodad might not be the most glamorous part of an AXIS foil, but structurally it is one of the most important.

It forms the connection between the aluminium mast and fuselage, so any improvement here affects how loads from the front wing are transferred through the rest of the foil.
The new AXIS Fuselage to 19mm Mast Adapter Doodad has been redesigned with additional support legs.
Those extra supports increase lateral stiffness while reducing torsional loading and stress through the sidewalls of the mast. In plain English, AXIS has created a broader and better-supported connection rather than asking a smaller area of the mast to deal with all of the load.

There is also a redesigned drop-on fairing around the mast-to-fuselage junction. The tapered shape takes some of the thinking developed through AXIS's higher-end mast programme and aims to create a cleaner transition through the water, reducing unnecessary turbulence and drag around the connection.
What is supplied with the Doodad?
Importantly, the new Doodad is supplied with its mounting screws.
That sounds like a small detail, but anyone who has built an AXIS foil from individual components will appreciate it. It removes some of the uncertainty around finding the correct mast-to-fuselage hardware when putting a new system together.
There is now a FATTY Doodad too
This could be one of the most interesting changes for existing AXIS riders.

The new AXIS FATTY Fuselage to 19mm Mast Adapter Doodad allows riders to connect the proven 19mm aluminium mast system to the newer AXIS FATTY fuselage platform.
That matters because it gives riders another progression path without automatically requiring an expensive carbon mast upgrade.
Choose the standard Doodad if you are running a compatible AXIS Black Series fuselage.
Choose the FATTY Doodad if you are building your foil around an AXIS FATTY fuselage but want to remain on the 19mm aluminium mast platform.
The new AXIS Black 19mm base plate
The AXIS 19mm Black Mast Base has received the biggest redesign of the three main aluminium mast components.

Rather than simply recolouring the previous plate, AXIS has re-engineered the connection from the ground up.
The new plate uses a tapered mast pocket to increase support around the lower mast connection while removing unnecessary material elsewhere.
More importantly, there is now a cross-stabilising bolt passing through the mast and base plate.
This additional mechanical connection is designed to stop the lower section of the mast from splaying under load. The objective is a more precise connection that stays solid over time, especially as foil wings become bigger, faster and capable of producing increasingly large loads.
Better for trench-style foil boards
The overall base plate has also become slimmer.
That makes it a much better fit for newer foil boards using recessed or trench-style mounting areas, where a large traditional mast plate can become awkward.
Foil Drive mounting has been considered too
AXIS has also added mounting points to support compatible Foil Drive and foil-assist installations.
That is an important sign of how mainstream foil assist has become. Instead of foil-drive integration being an afterthought, manufacturers are increasingly designing boards, masts and connections around it from the outset.

The AXIS Black 19mm aluminium mast
The mast itself is arguably the least changed part of the system – because there was little reason to start again.
The AXIS 19mm Black Aluminium Foil Mast retains the familiar 19mm extrusion that has made AXIS aluminium masts such a popular choice.

The significant differences are the new black anodised finish and the changes required to work with the redesigned Black base plate, including the cross-stabilising bolt connection.
The masts are also internally sealed, helping prevent water ingress into the extrusion.
AXIS Black Aluminium mast sizes explained
The Black 19mm aluminium mast is available across a very broad range of lengths, which is one of the biggest advantages of staying with aluminium.
| Mast length | Best suited to |
|---|---|
| 45cm | First flights, shallow-water learning and specialist use |
| 60cm | Early progression, shallow water, dock-start and specialist setups |
| 68cm | Prone surf foiling, SUP foil, pump and general surf use |
| 75cm | Surf, SUP foil, downwind and riders wanting more clearance |
| 82cm | Excellent all-round crossover length for foil and wing use |
| 90cm | Wing foiling, open-water riding, chop and larger swell |
| 105cm | Specialist high-clearance, powered and big-water applications |
There is no single correct mast length. Rider weight, board, front wing, local depth, riding style and discipline all matter.
For many wing foilers the 82cm or 90cm options will be the obvious starting points. Surf and pump-focused riders will often prefer something shorter, while specialist open-water riders may want more clearance.
New AXIS Black Aluminium vs old red aluminium system
This is probably the most important section if you already own AXIS equipment.
You do not necessarily need to replace your entire aluminium mast system.
| Combination | Compatible? |
|---|---|
| New Black mast + new Black base plate | Yes |
| New Black mast + previous-generation 19mm base plate | Yes |
| New Black mast + previous-generation Doodad | Yes |
| New Black Doodad + previous red 19mm aluminium mast | Yes |
| New Black FATTY Doodad + previous red 19mm aluminium mast | Yes |
| New Black base plate + previous red 19mm aluminium mast | No |
The last point is worth remembering.
The new Black base plate requires the new-generation mast connection, so it should not be purchased as a direct base-plate upgrade for an older red AXIS aluminium mast.
On the other hand, the new Doodads are backwards compatible with the older red 19mm aluminium mast, making them a much easier incremental upgrade.
If you are unsure exactly which generation of AXIS parts you own, send us a photograph of your mast, base plate and fuselage before ordering and we can help identify the correct parts.
Do you still need an AXIS complete screw pack?
For a brand-new Black Aluminium build, generally far less additional hardware is required than before.
The new base plate is supplied with its mast mounting hardware and cross bolt, while the new Doodads are supplied with their appropriate mounting screws.
That means a customer building a Black Aluminium system from the individual components should not automatically need to purchase a large complete AXIS screw pack simply to assemble the mast, base plate and Doodad.
You will, however, still need the appropriate hardware to attach the mast plate to the board.
For a conventional twin-track board this will normally mean something such as the AXIS M8 Stainless Screw and Slider Set.
Always check the exact hardware requirements of the board, fuselage, front wing and rear wing you are using rather than assuming every AXIS combination uses identical screw lengths.
Should existing AXIS riders upgrade?
If your current red AXIS aluminium setup is working perfectly, there is no need to throw it away.
That would miss the point of the AXIS modular system.
But there are several situations where moving into the Black system starts to make sense.
- You are building a completely new AXIS foil: start with the Black system rather than buying into the outgoing connection.
- You want a FATTY fuselage: the new FATTY Doodad gives aluminium riders a straightforward route into that platform.
- You use Foil Drive: the redesigned base plate has been created with modern foil-assist mounting requirements in mind.
- You ride large or heavily loaded foils: the improved mast-to-base and mast-to-fuselage connections are particularly relevant where loads are higher.
- Your existing Doodad needs replacing: the new Black Doodad is compatible with previous-generation red 19mm aluminium masts.
- You simply need another mast length: the Black mast remains compatible with previous-generation AXIS 19mm base plates and Doodads.
Aluminium still makes a huge amount of sense
Carbon gets plenty of attention in foiling, but aluminium remains the sensible choice for a large proportion of riders.
It is considerably less expensive, extremely durable and makes owning several mast lengths much more realistic.
That can actually be more useful than putting your entire budget into one premium carbon mast.
A surf foiler might own a shorter mast for shallow local breaks and another for bigger conditions. A wing foiler can progress from a shorter learning mast onto an 82cm or 90cm mast without replacing the rest of the foil.
For beginners and intermediates, the solid and predictable feel of the AXIS 19mm system is also one of its strongest characteristics.
And for experienced riders who simply want something dependable, stiff and relatively inexpensive, there is still nothing wrong with aluminium.
Our view on the new AXIS Black Aluminium system
This is a sensible evolution rather than change for the sake of change.
AXIS has resisted the temptation to redesign a mast extrusion that already worked and instead concentrated on the two connections where useful improvements could be made.
The Doodad spreads loads more effectively. The base plate gains a much more substantial mechanical connection. The system works better with modern recessed foil boards and foil-assist installations. And the arrival of a dedicated FATTY Doodad makes the aluminium platform more versatile than before.
For somebody buying into AXIS today, the Black Aluminium system is the obvious everyday starting point unless there is a specific reason to move straight to carbon.

AXIS Black Aluminium FAQs
Is the new AXIS Black aluminium mast a completely new mast shape?
No. AXIS has retained its proven 19mm aluminium mast extrusion. The biggest changes are the black finish and the redesigned connections around the mast, particularly the new base plate and Doodads.
Can I use the new AXIS Black mast with my old AXIS base plate?
Yes. The new Black 19mm aluminium mast is backwards compatible with previous-generation AXIS 19mm base plates and Doodads.
Can I fit the new Black base plate to my old red AXIS aluminium mast?
No. The new Black base plate uses the revised mast connection and cross-stabilising bolt and is not compatible with the previous-generation red 19mm aluminium mast.
Can I use the new Black Doodad with my old red AXIS mast?
Yes. Both the new Doodad design and its revised connection have been designed to remain compatible with previous-generation AXIS 19mm red aluminium masts.
What is the AXIS FATTY Doodad?
The FATTY Doodad is a dedicated adapter allowing an AXIS 19mm aluminium mast to connect to a compatible AXIS FATTY fuselage. It gives aluminium mast riders another route into the newer FATTY platform without needing to move directly to a carbon mast.
Does the new AXIS base plate work with Foil Drive?
The redesigned base plate includes additional mounting holes intended to provide direct attachment options for Foil Drive and other compatible foil-assist systems. Exact installation still depends on the Foil Drive system, motor position, board and overall setup, so contact us if you want us to check your combination.
Do the new AXIS parts come with screws?
The new Black base plate and Doodads are supplied with the relevant mounting hardware for those connections. The mast itself is not supplied with a separate general-purpose screw pack. Board-track screws and sliders are still required for a standard twin-track installation, and other foil components may have their own hardware requirements.
Which AXIS aluminium mast length should I buy?
That depends on your discipline and local conditions. Shorter 45–68cm masts suit learning, shallow water, surf and pumping applications. The 75–82cm range gives an excellent balance for surf, SUP and crossover use, while 82–90cm is a common choice for wing foiling and open water. The 105cm mast is a more specialist high-clearance option. Contact us with your weight, board, foil and riding style if you want a specific recommendation.
Should I buy AXIS aluminium or carbon?
Choose aluminium if value, durability, stiffness and the ability to own several mast lengths matter most. Choose carbon if reducing weight and drag and improving high-performance response are priorities. For many recreational, progressing and even experienced riders, the AXIS Black Aluminium system remains the more sensible starting point.
