Description

Duotone Wing Set Pop D/LAB

The Duotone Wing Set Pop D/LAB brings together Duotone's dedicated Pop D/LAB freestyle front wing and the matching Monobloc Tail F165 D/LAB as one correctly paired performance wing set. It is designed for advanced wingfoilers who want explosive pop, powerful re-pop, strong front-foot pressure and a predictable foil when accelerating hard into aerial manoeuvres.

This is a very different proposition from choosing a general freeride foil and hoping it also works for freestyle. The Pop platform has been developed specifically around speed into take-off, controlled foil loading, aggressive release and stability through flight and landing. The F165 tail continues that same character at the rear, producing a complete glider that feels firm, direct and intentionally locked-in underfoot.

The Wing Set is available in 650/F165 and 800/F165 configurations. Both use the same specialist F165 Monobloc tail, so the main choice is how much front-wing lift you need for your weight, conditions and riding style.

What is included in the Pop D/LAB Wing Set?

  • Duotone Pop D/LAB front wing in your selected 650 cm² or 800 cm² size
  • Duotone Monobloc Tail F D/LAB F165

This is a foil wing set rather than a complete foil. A compatible mast is still required.

If you already own part of the system, both components are also available separately as the Duotone Front Wing Pop D/LAB and Duotone Monobloc Tail F D/LAB.

Why choose the Pop D/LAB Wing Set?

  • Purpose-built freestyle pairing: front wing and rear tail are designed around the same high-performance freestyle objective.
  • Explosive pop: the Pop can be loaded aggressively before take-off, helping experienced riders generate height and amplitude.
  • Powerful re-pop: designed to regain lift rapidly for progressive combinations and technical freestyle moves.
  • Consistent front-foot pressure: creates a predictable foil that experienced riders can push against when accelerating.
  • Fast, low-drag front-wing profile: helps build maximum useful speed before take-off.
  • Freestyle-tuned F165 rear: refined stabiliser angle and tip twist increase power and reinforce the locked-in character of the Pop.
  • Compact 37 cm Monobloc tail: increases responsiveness while keeping rear-end drag low.
  • D/LAB Carbon construction: lightweight, stiff and direct for immediate power transfer.
  • Reinforced front-wing structure: developed to withstand the higher loads associated with modern freestyle take-offs and landings.
  • 3BS+ architecture: the additional fourth-screw connection increases pitch stability under load.
  • Competition-developed: the Pop platform was proven at GWA Freestyle World Cup level during its development.
  • Kite foil crossover: the fast, stable and controlled character also suits high-performance Kite Foiling.

A matched freestyle glider rather than an all-round compromise

The important thing to understand about the Pop is that Duotone has deliberately specialised it.

Many modern foils aim to balance glide, carving, pumping, speed and accessibility. That makes them excellent all-round choices, but those compromises are not always what an advanced freestyle rider wants.

The Pop D/LAB takes a more focused route. Its low-to-medium aspect design generates powerful lift while its fast profile allows the rider to accelerate hard towards a trick. As speed increases, the foil maintains dependable front-foot pressure rather than becoming vague or excessively loose.

The F165 Monobloc rear then reinforces this behaviour. The result is a foil you can load, release and recover with confidence, which is particularly important once your riding moves beyond basic jumps into rotations, combinations and moves requiring rapid re-pop.

Pop D/LAB front wing

At the centre of the Wing Set is the Pop D/LAB front wing.

Its fast, low-drag profile is designed to build speed before take-off. That speed is valuable because a freestyle foil needs sufficient energy in the system before the rider releases from the water. More controlled approach speed provides greater potential height and amplitude.

The outline carries useful chord through the centre of the wing, helping maintain the lift and front-foot pressure required for aggressive freestyle riding. It also retains useful stall resistance, allowing the Pop to combine high-speed performance with enough usable range to remain manageable outside the instant of take-off.

Monobloc Tail F165 D/LAB

The matched rear component is the Duotone Monobloc Tail F D/LAB.

The F165 has been developed specifically around freestyle rather than simply taking another Duotone stabiliser and pairing it with the Pop. Its angle and tip twist are tuned to create additional power and front-foot pressure, producing a firm and predictable foil through take-off, flight and landing.

A short 37 cm tail keeps reactions quick and contributes to a compact approximate 60 cm complete fuselage length on its intended D/LAB configuration. Integrating the tail and 165 cm² stabiliser into a single Monobloc carbon structure also reduces unnecessary interfaces and provides very direct energy transfer.

650 or 800 – which Pop D/LAB Wing Set?

Wing Set Front Wing Front Wing AR Front Wing Span Rear Tail
650 / MB-F165 650 cm² 6.9 66.9 cm F165
800 / MB-F165 800 cm² 6.8 74 cm F165

Pop D/LAB 650 + F165

The 650 is the core high-performance size within the Pop programme and was a go-to choice for Duotone's top freestyle riders during development.

For an experienced rider with the power and technique to use a smaller front wing, the 650 offers an excellent balance between speed, lift, compactness and control. It is the obvious starting point for riders specifically seeking the competitive freestyle character the Pop was developed around.

Pop D/LAB 800 + F165

The 800 produces more lift, making it the better direction for heavier riders, slightly lighter winds or riders wanting more support while retaining the Pop's specialist freestyle character.

The larger front wing does not change the basic design philosophy. It is still intended for powered freestyle riding, but the additional area makes lift more accessible and reduces the amount of speed required to generate support.

What about the Pop D/LAB 500?

A 500 cm² Pop D/LAB front wing also exists, but the Wing Set listing is offered in 650/F165 and 800/F165 configurations.

Riders specifically wanting the smallest Pop can purchase the Pop D/LAB 500 front wing separately and pair it with the same Monobloc Tail F165 D/LAB.

The 500 has a 60 cm span and aspect ratio of 7.2 and represents the smallest, most specialist end of the Pop range. It makes most sense for riders who already know why they want such a compact freestyle foil rather than someone simply trying to minimise foil area.

Built for pop and re-pop

There are two distinct parts to freestyle foil performance: the initial release from the water and what happens when the rider needs the foil to generate lift again.

The Pop is engineered for both.

Pop is the ability to load the foil before take-off and convert that pressure and forward speed into upward movement. The firm front-foot pressure of the Pop/F165 combination gives an experienced rider a dependable platform to push against.

Re-pop becomes increasingly important as freestyle progresses. After one movement or partial touchdown, the foil needs to recover and generate lift rapidly enough for the rider to continue the trick or move into another manoeuvre.

This is why the Pop Wing Set makes much more sense for a committed freestyle rider than simply choosing a fast freeride foil.

Control at speed

The Pop's fast profile allows considerable approach speed, but speed without control would be counterproductive for freestyle.

The foil is therefore designed to maintain consistent front-foot pressure across its speed range. Rather than the balance point changing dramatically as you accelerate, the rider gets a predictable platform when preparing to jump.

The 3BS+ connection and matched F165 rear tail further support pitch stability. This becomes particularly valuable when the foil is subjected to aggressive rider input immediately before take-off and substantial loads during landing.

D/LAB Carbon construction

Pop sits within Duotone's premium D/LAB performance range. In this application, lightweight construction is only part of the story.

Stiffness is particularly important for freestyle. When you push hard through the board and mast, you want that input transferred through the foil immediately. Excessive flex can make the timing of a loaded take-off less precise.

The Pop therefore uses a carefully tuned Carbon construction together with an increased fuselage cross-section designed to provide the strength and rigidity required for aggressive freestyle riding and heavy landings.

The F165 follows the same philosophy with a lightweight and stiff D/LAB Carbon Monobloc structure.

Who should choose the Pop D/LAB Wing Set?

We would primarily recommend the Pop Wing Set to experienced intermediate, advanced and expert wingfoilers who are actively progressing freestyle.

It is particularly relevant if you:

  • Already jump consistently and want to progress into more technical manoeuvres
  • Want greater speed and control on your approach to a jump
  • Need a foil that can be loaded hard before take-off
  • Value consistent front-foot pressure
  • Want more explosive pop
  • Are working on moves that require rapid re-pop
  • Prefer a firm and predictable foil rather than an especially loose surf feel
  • Want a dedicated freestyle setup rather than one foil attempting to cover every discipline
  • Also want high-performance crossover into Kite Foiling

Who should consider another foil?

The Pop is not the automatic choice for every experienced rider simply because it is D/LAB.

If your priority is downwind, parawing, pumping and long-distance glide, the Duotone Glide 3.0 D/LAB is designed around a completely different set of priorities and will make substantially more sense.

If you want a foil that prioritises manoeuvrability, wave connection, prone riding, freefly or a more playful carving character, look towards the Crest platform rather than Pop.

The easiest way to understand the complete range is our Duotone Foils 2027 Explained – Complete Range Guide.

Pop vs Glide – very different foils

Characteristic Pop D/LAB Glide 3.0 D/LAB
Primary purpose Freestyle Freeride / Downwind / Pump & Glide
Aspect direction Low / Medium High, around AR 12
Main strength Pop, re-pop and powered control Glide, pumping and efficiency
Feel Locked-in and powerful Efficient, playful and glide-orientated
Matched Monobloc tail F165 H or PX depending on discipline

Neither is universally better. They have been designed to solve different problems. Buy the Pop because you want to push freestyle; buy Glide because you want to stay flying efficiently.

Mast choice

The Wing Set still requires a compatible Duotone mast.

For riders building a carbon performance setup, the Duotone Mast SLS 2.0 is a logical match. Its tapered profile, one-piece Carbon construction and 3BS+ connection provide the stiffness and direct feedback that complement the Pop's high-load freestyle character.

If faster assembly is important, the Duotone Mast SLS 2.0 Quickmount combines the SLS carbon mast with Duotone's tool-free Quickmount base system.

The SUP Company buying advice

The Pop Wing Set is one of those products where choosing by discipline matters far more than choosing by price or construction label. If you are mainly freeriding, pumping or looking for an easier foil, buying Pop simply because it is D/LAB will not give you the best setup.

If, however, your sessions are increasingly centred around jumping, rotations, powered freestyle and progressing aerial tricks, the benefit of a dedicated front wing and matching freestyle tail becomes much easier to justify.

For many riders choosing between the two Wing Set sizes, the 650 is the performance reference. Move to the 800 when you want more lift because of rider weight, lighter wind or because you want slightly more support underneath the same freestyle platform.

Duotone Wing Set Pop D/LAB FAQs

What is included with the Duotone Pop D/LAB Wing Set?

The Wing Set combines a Pop D/LAB front wing with the matching Monobloc Tail F165 D/LAB. The available configurations are 650/F165 and 800/F165. A mast is still required to create a complete foil.

Is this a complete foil?

No. It is a matched front-wing and rear-tail set. You will still require a compatible Duotone mast and board to create a complete riding setup.

Should I choose the Pop 650 or 800?

The 650 is the more compact performance option and was a key size for Duotone's top freestyle riders during development. The 800 generates more lift and is better suited to heavier riders, lighter conditions or riders wanting additional support.

Why is there no 500 option in the Wing Set?

The Wing Set is listed in 650/F165 and 800/F165 configurations. The Pop D/LAB 500 front wing is available separately and can be paired with the same Monobloc Tail F165 D/LAB.

What does the F165 tail add to the Pop?

The F165 is specifically tuned for freestyle. Its refined angle and tip twist create more front-foot pressure and a stronger, more locked-in feeling, while its compact 37 cm tail keeps the foil responsive and low drag.

Is the Pop D/LAB suitable for a beginner?

It would not be our first recommendation. Pop is a dedicated freestyle performance foil designed for riders who already have established foil control and can make use of its speed, strong front-foot pressure and aggressive take-off characteristics.

Can I use the Pop for normal freeride winging?

Yes, but that is not the main reason to choose it. Its strengths become most relevant when riding powered and progressing freestyle. A broader freeride foil may be easier and more versatile if jumping is only an occasional part of your sessions.

Is the Pop good for pumping and downwind?

Those are not its primary strengths. For sustained pumping, low drag and connecting bumps, the Glide 3.0 family is a much more appropriate choice.

Can the Pop D/LAB Wing Set be used for Kite Foiling?

Yes. The Pop is also intended for performance Kite Foiling, where its speed, controlled front-foot pressure and stability under power are valuable.

What is 3BS+?

3BS+ is Duotone's latest foil connection architecture. Compatible components use an additional fourth screw to further improve pitch stability and rigidity, particularly under the higher loads associated with fast and aggressive riding.

Can I buy the Pop front wing and F165 separately?

Yes. The Pop D/LAB front wing and Monobloc Tail F165 D/LAB are both available separately, which is particularly useful if you already own one component or want the separately available 500 cm² Pop front wing.
