Duotone Unit D/LAB Wing 2027

The 2027 Duotone Unit D/LAB is the highest-performance version of Duotone's benchmark Unit wing, built for experienced and ambitious riders who want minimum weight, maximum frame stiffness, low aerodynamic drag and an exceptionally direct connection to the wing.

For 2027, Duotone has made meaningful changes rather than simply updating the graphics. A shorter centre strut gives the wing a more compact feel, the reduced leading-edge diameter cuts drag, the profile distribution has been refined for more efficient power and better flagging, and canopy tension and tip twist have been retuned for cleaner aerodynamics and improved draft control. The window layout is also new for better visibility.

Those design changes sit around the defining D/LAB construction: a full 82g/m² Aluula Gold leading edge and strut paired with Duotone's MOD3s performance canopy. On the water, that translates into quick acceleration, very low swing weight, immediate response when pumping or sheeting, precise control when powered and an impressively neutral feel when the wing is flagged on a wave or swell.

This is not necessarily the Unit every rider needs. The 2027 Duotone Unit SLS provides an excellent balance of stiffness, low-end drive and price, while the 2027 Duotone Unit offers a more forgiving frame feel and broader accessibility. The Unit D/LAB is for riders who specifically want the lightest, fastest and most direct option in the family.

What's new on the 2027 Duotone Unit D/LAB?

Shorter strut for more compact handling

One of the most important shape changes is the shorter centre strut. Reducing the distance and mass extending behind the rider makes the wing feel more compact when it is moved rapidly from one position to another.

In a gybe or tack, that means less wing to swing around your body. For freestyle, the reduced swing weight helps when redirecting the wing through rotations. On a wave, it makes quick corrections easier without the wing dominating what the board and foil are doing beneath you.

The improvement is particularly noticeable on the bigger sizes, where reducing swing weight makes a large wing feel significantly less cumbersome.

Reduced leading-edge diameter for lower drag

The Unit D/LAB uses a smaller-diameter leading edge than the 2027 Unit SLS and original Unit. This is an important distinction rather than a cosmetic design choice.

A smaller leading edge presents less frontal area to the airflow. Less aerodynamic resistance means easier acceleration and less drag as riding speed increases. Riders using faster foils or regularly riding well powered are most likely to notice the difference.

The result is a wing that feels efficient rather than increasingly resistant as the apparent wind builds.

Refined profile distribution

Duotone has changed where the depth of the wing is positioned. The 2027 Unit D/LAB carries less profile depth through the centre and more towards the quarter-span area.

This allows the wing to produce efficient usable drive without relying on an excessively deep central profile. It also helps the wing remain settled when depowered, which is particularly valuable when you flag the wing and allow your foil to do the work on a wave or swell.

Optimised canopy tension and tip twist

Wing performance is not dictated by frame material alone. Canopy tension and the way the tips twist under load have a substantial effect on power delivery, depower and draft stability.

For 2027 these areas have been refined to produce a cleaner canopy and more predictable response. When a gust arrives, the aim is to keep the centre of effort controlled rather than allowing the wing to become vague or dramatically change character.

This matters particularly on a D/LAB wing because the exceptionally rigid frame transfers small changes in canopy behaviour directly to the rider.

Updated window layout

The new window arrangement provides improved visibility through the wing when entering transitions, checking downwind traffic or riding in a busy launch area.

The windows are positioned with performance in mind so that improved visibility does not require unnecessary changes to the high-performance canopy layout.

Full 82g/m² Aluula Gold D/LAB construction

The defining feature of the Unit D/LAB is the full Aluula Gold inflated frame. Duotone uses 82g/m² Aluula Gold through both the leading edge and centre strut rather than limiting it to selected panels.

The benefit is much more than simply producing a lighter wing.

When a wing is pumped or heavily loaded, a conventional inflated structure flexes. Some flex can be comfortable, but it also means that part of the rider's movement is absorbed by the structure before being transferred into the canopy.

The extremely stiff Aluula frame changes shape less under load. When you sheet in, pump or redirect the D/LAB, the response therefore feels immediate. This is what creates the exceptionally direct connection for which D/LAB wings are known.

Across Duotone's D/LAB wing construction, Aluula and the associated construction techniques can reduce total wing weight by up to around 15% compared with Original construction, depending on wing size.

That weight saving is particularly relevant on medium and larger wings. A few hundred grams positioned around a large inflatable structure has a much greater effect on swing weight and flagged handling than the same difference carried close to the rider.

Just as importantly, MOD3s is designed to minimise unwanted stretch under load. This helps the canopy retain its intended profile when heavily powered rather than becoming progressively deeper or less precise.

On a wing with such a stiff frame, controlling canopy deformation is particularly important. The combination of Aluula Gold and MOD3s is what allows the Unit D/LAB to feel crisp without the canopy undermining the precision of the frame.

How does the Unit D/LAB perform?

Freeride

Wave riding and freefly

Wave riding is one of the areas where the premium construction is easiest to appreciate.

Once you have used the wing to reach a wave, the objective changes: rather than wanting maximum power, you want the wing to interfere as little as possible.

The low frame and canopy weight reduce the mass hanging from your leading hand, while the refined profile distribution helps the wing remain stable as it is flagged. The wide leading-edge handle then gives you freedom to adjust hand position through turns.

Pumping and take-off

How early you actually fly will still depend heavily on your board and foil. A stiff premium wing cannot compensate for a board that releases poorly or a foil that is inefficient for your weight and conditions.

For maximum efficiency, pairing the wing with an appropriate mid-length board and efficient foil creates a much more significant improvement than simply increasing wing size.

Gusts and top-end control

The refined canopy tension, profile and tip twist help control how the wing reacts through gusts and lulls. Because the frame itself moves very little, maintaining canopy stability becomes especially important.

The result is a direct wing, but one designed to remain predictable rather than nervous when heavily loaded.

Fusion Boom or Fusion Handles?

The 2027 Unit D/LAB uses Duotone's modular Fusion control system. You can choose between the continuous Duotone Fusion Boom or a pair of Duotone Fusion Handles.

The wing is supplied without a Fusion Boom or Fusion Handles, so your chosen control system must be selected separately.

All Unit D/LAB sizes for 2027 run from 3.5m² to 6.5m², which means the complete range uses the Large Fusion control size.

  • Fusion Boom L: 96cm – suitable for Unit 3.5m² through 6.5m².
  • Fusion Handles L: suitable for Unit 3.5m² through 6.5m².

Both systems use lightweight carbon construction, an oval carbon tube and Duotone's ergonomic pistol-grip profile.

Choose the Fusion Boom if...

  • You like being able to place your hands anywhere along the control area.
  • You frequently slide or reposition your hands through manoeuvres.

Neither option automatically makes the wing faster. This is primarily about ergonomics and which control layout feels most natural to you.

The published 2027 Unit D/LAB range starts at 3.5m² and runs through to 6.5m². The smaller 2.0m², 2.5m² and 3.0m² sizes offered elsewhere in the Unit family are not listed as Unit D/LAB sizes for 2027.

Published wind ranges are a guide rather than a guarantee. Rider weight, foil size and efficiency, board choice, technique, water state and whether you prefer to ride heavily or lightly powered will all affect the usable range.

Which Unit D/LAB size should you choose?

Do not choose wing size from rider weight or wind speed alone. Your board and foil have a major influence on the amount of wing power needed to take off.

A rider on an efficient mid-length board and modern low-drag foil may comfortably use a smaller wing than someone of identical weight using a shorter board and less efficient foil. Pumping technique can widen the difference further.

3.5m²

A dedicated high-wind wing for most riders and a particularly useful size for strong-wind coastal wave sessions. The compact D/LAB construction helps a small wing remain very controlled when conditions are powerful and unsettled.

4.0m²

A strong smaller-quiver option for riders who regularly foil in windy UK conditions. It offers substantial top-end while retaining enough usable range to avoid being limited purely to extreme days.

4.5m²

A highly useful performance size covering moderate through strong wind. For lighter riders it can become a central quiver wing, while heavier riders may use it as their strong-wind option.

5.0m²

For many UK riders this is likely to sit close to the centre of a quiver. Its published 10–25 knot range gives it broad usefulness, while the reduced weight keeps it manageable when the breeze strengthens.

5.5m²

Useful if you want more bottom-end than a 5.0m² without immediately moving into the largest wing sizes. It can also work well as the bigger half of a simple two-wing quiver.

6.0m²

This is where the D/LAB construction becomes particularly attractive. Reducing frame and canopy weight matters more as wing area increases, helping the 6.0m² feel less cumbersome when pumping, manoeuvring and flagging.

6.5m²

The largest Unit D/LAB for 2027. It is aimed at riders who genuinely need additional surface area but still want the low swing weight and rigid response of the flagship construction.

Why choose D/LAB over SLS?

The D/LAB makes sense if you specifically value reduced swing weight, lower drag and the most immediate possible power transfer. Wave riders, advanced freeriders and riders using faster foils are likely to appreciate those differences most.

The advantage also becomes more obvious as wing size increases. A light 6.0m² or 6.5m² frame has a greater effect on handling than saving the same proportion of weight from a much smaller wing.

Why choose Unit SLS instead?

The 2027 Unit SLS is likely to be the performance/value sweet spot for many committed riders.

Its PentaTX and Aluula centre-panel construction creates high stiffness and direct response, but the SLS retains the same leading-edge diameter as the original Unit. That helps it retain more base grunt and low-end drive.

If your priority is strong usable power and high performance rather than achieving the absolute minimum weight and drag, the SLS deserves serious consideration.

Where does Unit SLS Concept Blue fit?

The 2027 Duotone Unit SLS Concept Blue provides the same SLS position in the range while incorporating Duotone's Concept Blue material approach and undyed materials.

Choose it if you want the performance characteristics of the SLS construction but prefer the Concept Blue version rather than the standard colourways.

Why choose the standard Unit?

The 2027 standard Unit should not be dismissed simply because it sits below SLS and D/LAB in price.

The more forgiving flex of its inflated structure can actually make gusts feel smoother and the wing less demanding. For developing riders, or riders who value comfort and durability over the final increment of stiffness, it can be the better purchase.

Duotone Skybrid D/LAB – premium freeride, freefly and efficiency

For a premium setup focused on early release, low swing weight and efficient freeride, the Duotone Skybrid D/LAB Hollow Foil Board is one of the most logical pairings.

Its mid-length outline creates efficient glide before take-off, while its extremely light Hollow Shell Composite construction keeps board swing weight low once flying. Combined with the light Unit D/LAB above you, the whole setup feels much smaller and more reactive than its volume would suggest.

Is the Unit D/LAB suitable for a beginner?

A beginner can use it, but it is rarely where we would put the largest proportion of a first-time setup budget. The standard Unit 2027 has a more forgiving construction, while correctly sizing your board and foil generally has a greater effect on early progression than upgrading immediately to D/LAB.

Is D/LAB worth the extra money?

It is most worthwhile for riders who can benefit from reduced swing weight, low drag, rapid pumping response and lighter flagged handling. If you already ride confidently and are sensitive to equipment response, the improvement can be very noticeable. If you are still learning consistent flight, the Unit SLS or standard Unit may represent better overall value.

Can I reuse my existing Fusion Boom or Handles?
