The Duotone Unit SLS Concept Blue 2027 is the premium middle ground in Duotone's Unit family: lighter, stiffer and more responsive than the standard Duotone Unit 2027, while remaining a more accessible proposition than the full-Aluula Duotone Unit D/LAB 2027.

For 2027, Duotone has done more than update the graphics. The Unit SLS receives a shorter centre strut, revised profile distribution, optimised canopy tension and tip twist, plus a new window arrangement. Combined with its 135g PentaTX frame, 82g Aluula Gold centre panel and MOD3 S canopy, the result is a compact-feeling wing with strong low-end drive, crisp steering and a very direct connection between rider input and wing response.

The C03 Undyed Concept Blue version uses the same SLS performance platform as the regular Unit SLS 2027, while integrating Duotone's Concept Blue material approach and distinctive undyed finish. It is not a softer or lower-specification Unit; it is another way of choosing the SLS construction.

What's new on the Unit SLS for 2027?

Shorter centre strut

The shorter strut is one of the most important changes to the 2027 Unit family. Reducing the length of the central structure lowers swing weight and makes the wing feel physically smaller around the rider without reducing its actual sail area.

You notice that most when the wing is moving rather than simply parked and powered: changing hands through a gybe, bringing it across during a tack, correcting its position after a touchdown or rotating it during a jump.

It also helps larger sizes feel less cumbersome, which is particularly useful when you need the power of a bigger wing but do not want it dominating your session.

More low-end power and drive

The Unit SLS retains the same leading-edge diameter as the standard Unit while introducing a considerably stiffer SLS structure. This gives it strong base grunt and useful low-end drive.

In practical terms, when you pump the wing there is less unwanted flex absorbing your input. More of that movement contributes to acceleration, helping you generate the board and foil speed needed for take-off.

This distinguishes the SLS from the D/LAB. The Unit D/LAB 2027 uses a reduced-diameter leading edge to prioritise minimum drag, acceleration and top-end efficiency, while the SLS retains a little more emphasis on usable drive and all-round performance.

Refined profile distribution

Duotone has reduced profile depth through the centre of the wing while moving more profile towards the quarter-span sections.

Rather than concentrating the wing's pull through one deep central area, this distributes power more efficiently across the canopy. The result is cleaner acceleration when sheeted in and improved stability when the wing is released and flagged.

Optimised canopy tension and tip twist

Canopy tension determines how well the wing holds its intended aerodynamic shape, while tip twist influences how the outer sections manage load and gusts.

Both have been refined for 2027 to create a cleaner canopy, more stable draft position and a direct response without making the wing unnecessarily nervous.

That matters in real UK conditions. When wind strength repeatedly changes through a session, a stable wing lets you concentrate more on the foil, board and manoeuvre rather than continually correcting an unsettled canopy.

New window layout

The updated window arrangement improves visibility around the wing while retaining the performance-focused canopy structure. Better visibility becomes particularly useful in crowded water, while approaching another rider or when the wing is temporarily blocking your view through a transition.

SLS construction: why PentaTX and Aluula Gold matter

The biggest reason to move from the standard Unit 2027 to the Unit SLS is not simply that the materials sound more exotic. The important difference is how little the inflated structure changes shape when it is loaded.

135g PentaTX

PentaTX is used through the SLS airframe and is significantly less elastic than conventional Dacron. Duotone quotes PentaTX as approximately 15% lighter overall than standard Dacron, with around 50% less elongation and up to five times greater tear resistance.

Less elongation means less deformation. When the wing loads up in a gust, during a pump or before a jump, the frame retains its intended shape more effectively. That gives the rider a firmer and more immediate response.

82g Aluula Gold centre panel

The Unit SLS adds an 82g Aluula Gold centre panel through one of the most heavily loaded areas of the structure.

Putting additional stiffness here helps reduce flex through the centre of the wing. Pump it and the response is immediate. Sheet in and the wing loads cleanly. Steer or redirect it and there is less delay between your hands moving and the wing reacting.

This strategic combination is what makes SLS appealing: premium material is used where it makes a tangible difference without taking the construction to the full-Aluula level and price of D/LAB.

MOD3 S canopy

The canopy uses MOD3 S, Duotone's lightweight low-stretch canopy material. Duotone lists MOD3 S at approximately 69g compared with 87g for MOD3.

The benefit is not simply reduced weight. The lower-stretch material helps maintain the wing's designed draft under load, giving smoother power delivery, a cleaner powered canopy and better control towards the upper end of the wind range.

Moulded mini-batten pockets further support the canopy and are designed to improve stability and longevity around these areas.

What does Concept Blue mean on the 2027 Unit SLS?

The Concept Blue version incorporates Duotone's Concept Blue materials into the SLS construction and uses the distinctive C03 Undyed finish.

Crucially, Concept Blue does not move the wing into a different performance category. The 2027 Unit SLS Concept Blue retains the SLS design direction, PentaTX and Aluula Gold construction, MOD3 S canopy and the same all-round freeride, freestyle and wave purpose.

How does the Unit SLS Concept Blue perform?

Freeride

Freeride is where the Unit's broad usability really shows. It generates useful low-end power to get moving, drives efficiently once on foil and stays composed as the wind increases.

The SLS construction makes the wing feel especially connected when accelerating or pushing upwind. Compared with the standard Unit, there is less softness through the airframe and a more immediate reaction when you adjust sheeting or steering.

Gybes, tacks and progression

The shorter centre strut gives the wing a more compact feel as it travels around you. For riders progressing from basic gybes into consistent tacks and more technical transitions, this reduction in perceived swing weight makes the wing easier to reposition.

The Unit SLS remains an all-round wing rather than a dedicated wave-only design, but wave performance is a genuine strength.

Jumping and freestyle

A stiff airframe becomes particularly valuable when the wing is heavily loaded. The PentaTX and Aluula centre construction gives a direct connection as you accelerate and load for take-off, while the shorter strut reduces the amount of wing mass moving around during rotations and transitions.

The Unit SLS Concept Blue is available from 2.0m² to 6.5m². Duotone's wind figures are useful starting points, but they should not be treated as absolute limits. Rider weight, foil size, foil efficiency, board choice, water state and pumping ability all influence how much wing you need.

Which Unit SLS Concept Blue size should I choose?

Do not select your wing using wind speed alone. Two riders in exactly the same wind can need very different wing sizes if one is using an efficient larger foil and the other is using a small, fast front wing.

A higher-volume or efficient mid-length board can also build speed more easily before take-off, reducing how hard you have to work the wing in marginal conditions. A short, low-volume board may require more precise pumping and therefore more available power.

The Unit SLS Concept Blue can work with very different boards because it is not tied to one discipline. Choosing the right board should start with how you want to ride.

The Skybrid SLS will make the most sense for many freeriders because its longer waterline and efficient release help produce earlier take-offs, particularly in inconsistent wind.

Fusion Handles

The Duotone Fusion Handle Set uses lightweight carbon construction with ergonomic pistol-grip angles. The defined hand positions are easy to locate without looking and the separate handles keep packing dimensions compact.

Choose handles if you like a consistent front and rear hand position and want a simple, direct control arrangement.

Fusion Boom

The Duotone Fusion Boom provides a continuous grip, allowing you to slide or place your hands anywhere along the control surface.

This can be particularly useful when pumping, moving your hands during technical transitions or experimenting with different positions. Riders coming from windsurfing also frequently prefer the familiar continuous-boom feel.

Neither system is inherently better. The best choice comes down to how you position your hands and how you ride.

Pump

Always use the inflation pressure stated on the actual 2027 wing and its product labelling rather than carrying a pressure figure forward from a previous model year.

Foil and board

The correct foil is every bit as important as the wing. A larger, stall-friendly foil generally reduces the speed and power needed to take off, while a smaller performance foil places more emphasis on board speed, pumping technique and wing power.
